Whatever, things are really getting nasty out there.

I suppose villifying the Russians makes it morally less worrying to take the Ukranian side.
The fact that the shits in the Ukranian government have been hiding the a lot of the money they've embezzled from their country in UK tax dodges could have something to do with the line Murdoch is taking on them and those whacky Russians, I suppose.

Surely the current Ukranian government cant have embezzled much, after just a few weeks in power. Given some are neo facists, I am unsure we can be certain of any claims they make on this topic.

The president of the regime in Kyiv has ordered the disestablishment of the 25th Airborne brigade. The brigade stands accused of cowardice for refusing to fire on Ukrainian civilians. The brigade's colonel claims his mission was to fight terrorists, not Ukrainian villagers. This action sets up a dangerous tension between Turchynov and the military which will not benefit the regime.

In a further action, Ukrainian border guards have been ordered to deny Russian men between 16 and 60 entry to the country, including all Crimeans. The order is intended to ban "undesirables." This will only add to the unpopularity of the regime among ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine, but Turchynov appears determined to escalate the hostilities and provoke Russia.

I don't know if this is true or not, though I pray its false. But to those who say the US shouldn't be involved (but are ex pats anyway), I guess the terrm "never again" means nothing.

If all this is true, the US stayed out of such a thing before, claiming it didn't concern us. When it was over, millions were dead, several countries destroyed and the truth of the atrocities came out, the world swore "never again."

Yet, the past started with just such random propaganda. I so pray its false.

Here's the thing about U.S. involvement -- Ukraine is not a NATO country, BUT, Ukraine gave up its nuclear capacity under the promise we would defend it territorially.

We aren't doing that. Right now, Ukrainian leadership is going "DOH! We should have kept the nukes!" And so is every other country we might have reached through negotiation.

Of course, Bush already covered that--we invaded/threatened countries we *could* invade, while leaving the worst of the lot, N. Korea, in peace. Guess why.

The U.S. listens to nukes. Period. Russia has them. That makes them safe (from the U.S.).

And the word of the U.S. is cheap talk.

Incidentally, Russia also promised to respect Ukraine territorially. Surprise!

Those flyers could be a lot of things, but my hunch is they are a Russian propaganda operation, intended to muddy the waters of support for Ukraine. Protecting the Jews of a region where Jews have been slaughtered repeatedly might look pretty on paper, when the time comes.

That was exactly my point. We promised to defend its territorial integrity. And our president has not kept our contractual obligations.

How exactly will any other country ever dismantle nukes.

Why would they stop their race to nukes.

This failure is incompetence.

If you ever bothered to read, you'd know the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances is a general statement of intent, lacking the rigor of an international treaty and accompanying ratification procedure...hardly a "contractual obligation."

Other than that you don't know what you're talking about, I agree with the general principle, as I've already stated.

Incompetence is inability -- and that's not the issue here (and it's not unique to this administration).

France and China provided unilateral security assurances in the form of diplomatic notes to Ukraine as well.

So there's a lot of it going around . . .

I don't know if it was before, during, or just after when Reagan did it, but it seems to me it was the same time the Russians did it.

I'm not going to get started on the useless fucking French (or is it too late?), and I don't imagine the Chinese really gave a fuck to begin with. As I've pointed out a time or three, I generally don't get into the issues of countries I don't live in.

It isn't even whether or not we can push Russia around - it's that piss poor decisions by this administration have placed Russia in a very nice place to push us around. They have us by the short and curlies on all the equipment we need to get out of Afghanistan. Unless, of course, we are prepared to invade Russia from there to get access to their railroads.
