Termyn8or -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/9/2006 12:41:40 PM)

Don't be bashing SUVs. Some of them have four cylinders.

What is happening here is that all of Bush's buddies are cleaning up, but he says he is on our side, that he encourages them to do research to find ways to make less money. What a crock.

These MFs are pumping oil out of Iraq at an alarming rate. There is no accountability. The DFI (Development Fund for Iraq) makes disbursments to Haliburton and other companies, yet a couple years ago there was no health care for Iraqis. I don't mean Iraqis had to pay hospital bills, I mean the hospitals that did not get bombed did not have the resources.

Remember the Mafia ? Yes the one that didn't really exist (snicker).  Well there were good guys and bad guys. The good guys you could deal with, deal some drugs, some stolen shit etc., and then there were the bad guys. the ones who wanted to simply take everything. Well the latter crowd did not get busted like John Gotti, they got elected.

The old saying "One for the money, two for the show" takes on a whole new meaning these days.

Perhaps we should have one day everybody can agree to not buy gas. If you think it'll hurt their wallets you are wrong. What it will do is jam them up. There is almost a contiuous flow of oil from the wells to the refineries, and then to the gas pump. To have a whole day with absolutely no gas sales would impact them in different ways, not the least of which would be the show of solidarity. That kind of thing can worry public servants. It might get them thinking we might get a third party candidate elected eventually, even though they have taken steps to inhibit that possibility. (campaign finance reform, read about it, it is nasty and accomplishes nothing for the People)

Actually if we could even get, say 40% of the US population to take their vacations on a certain week, but NOT go driving or flying around, just buy no gas, simply do not travel. Forty percent for a week is quite a show of solidarity.

All this shit is perfectly legal, even the mayor of NYC ordering the cab drivers back to work didn't solve that problem. Perhaps it is time for the truck drivers to get together.

There are two misconceptions in the world. For one, people don't realize that 99% of what you need, what you buy comes to you on a truck, even a new truck.

Another problem is that people thing of heating oil and gasoline when they think of oil. Look at the monitor on your PC, see the plastic ? It is made from petroleum.

Yes, petroleum not only fuels (pun) the oil companies and allows us to drive around and heat homes, it also allows us to live in the throw away society where nothing needs to be fixed. Just buy a new one.

This, in turn, "fuels" the Chinese economy.

Well, the Chinese economy has been fueled plenty in the last few decades. So much in fact that they could cash in their US securities and cause about 40% inflation overnight.

Mass production of consumer goods depends on oil alot more than most people think, and as long as we fill the landfills with our useless plastic junk we make ourselves dependent. My TV is eighteen years old, my car is nineteen years old. I could get a brand new car on my credit card, but I don't. I do not want it. Even in a 1987 high end Buick, there is alot of plastic, so the petroleum does not only go in the gas tank and crankcase.

There is an upside to all this believe it or not. People will be forced to learn to conserve. Too bad it didn't happen sooner. Carpooling is good, getting something fixed instead of buying a new one is good, but none of this goes far enough.

In Ohio, Eastlake and Westlake are about 50 miles apart, I have mused, and told people "Why is it that a bricklayer from Eastlake drives to Westlake to do the exact same job as a bricklayer from Eastlake does in Westlake ?". Indeed. We need to think up new ways to get along, yes you heard it here first. When something gets out of your economic reach, you must do this radical thing they used to do in the old days. Without.

So for three bucks less an hour I drive about 19 miles round trip. This is much better than the 46 I used to have to drive. This is significant. No, I did not change jobs for that reason but it's still good.

There is only so much that can be done on this end. A show force with a boycott might send a message, but it's not a real solution, they know we can't keep it up. A general decrease in consumption is all that can do anything for us. They have the gas, they know we need it. It's not just that either. Petroleum is used in bicycle tires as well, as well as your tennis shoes. They still get your money one way or the other, it's just a matter of making it so they get less.

Any (remember how much I am against big government) business that gouges the American public should be subject to nationalisation, that is to take it away from them. Unfortunately in our current predicament this will not do us any good.

Now I will go to the store and get beer, one of the things that takes very little petroleum to make. Unfortunately I have to drive there.

Cuddle, it was 3.20 where we buy it and has been for awhile..of course I am in California.. would you believe that they closed an oil refinery here a couple of years ago even though demand was high, because they want to charge Californians even more for their gas.

I laugh when I see people in areas with no snow where people drive things like Hummers... I laugh because these people are part of the reason we are paying out our ass for gas, and they have to pay 70 bucks to fill their tanks at least once a week if not far more... I feel no pity for these folks.

It has nothing to do with what you drive and the price of gas going up! The oil companys have been closing refinerys for the last 25 years without replacing them. The reason they have done this is because they know they can produce less and sell it for more profit, they put this plan into effect 25 years ago and it is working for them.

Would you really like to see gas prices go down? It wouldn't be hard to bring them down. You and everyone else has to want them to be lower and not just want to complain about them being to high. How you ask, its really very simple, its called a boycott. I know your going to tell me, but I have to go to work, or I have to go to the doctor, ect. ect. I'm not here to tell you not to do every thing you want to, and not drive what you want to.

OK, I bet your thinking I'm a nut right now, and I could be but it has nothing to do with bring the price of gas down. What does have to do with bring the price of gas down is who you buy it from. My way of thinking is, you pick out the 2 biggest gas producers and NOT BUY THEIR GAS, you buy it from 3,4 or on down the line. What is that going to do to their supply of gas? Its going to make it go up. Whats that going to do to their profit? Its going to make it go down. What are they going to do with a huge supply of gas they have to store but can't sell? They are going to lower their prices!

If you don't like the SUV's or any other vehicle, do it because you feel it causes to much greenhouse gasses, clogs up the roads, takes up to many parking spaces, ect. ect. Don't blame the higher gas prices on them though. IMHO if you do your part of the problem not part of the salutation, and prices will never drop to what they should be.

My 2 cents

You mean you can't afford to drive anywhere. Give walking and or bicycleing a try. What's that going to cost you?

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/9/2006 4:04:52 PM)

Excuse me FangsNfeet, how silly of me!

Dtesmoac -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/9/2006 4:16:36 PM)

GelertD - did you also include the conversion of US gallon to UK gallon - for once ours is bigger than theirs?

Termyn8or -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/9/2006 5:43:11 PM)

WayWardSoul has a real good idea there. Boycott one or two companies. Unlike my idea of not buying gas on a given day from any company, this can be sustained.

I'll tell you what, let it be BP. British Petroleum. And really, you don't have to worry about hurting a local business, they make hardly any profit on gasoline, if any. Most of their profit comes from other things, additives, oil and their convenience store for example.

I use Shell exclusively, and the cheapest grade too. I have never had to replace an injector or fuel filter on any of the cars, except one that literally rusted out. Never had a catalytic go bad, except when they rust out.

Unfortunately boycotting other petroleum products, like anything made of plastic and certain other materials will not really have an impact. They are made from different components of the petroleum. While they can vary the proportions a bit between cracking gasoline, deisel fuel, heating oil and a few other things, plastic raw material is actually a waste product. Linoleum is basically painted coal tar. Yes, you are buying a waste product !

I have heard the BP gas is not good for your car, but I don't give that alot of weight. However the movers and shakers at BP are part of the problem in the middle East. Funny, as I praise Shell gas I am forever fumed at the local Shell station. This is fine. I used to spend about $500 a month there on everything, beer, cigarettes, whatever, but no more. Only gas. The owner of that station did not treat me like a customer one day, his tone of voice was like I was some kind of dog or something. While $500 a month is a drop in the bucket, my $500 goes into a different bucket every month.The $50 or so I spend on gas there now makes them how much ? Some stations actually lose money on each gallon.

I like this boycott idea, it's really all we have. The trick is to implement it correctly. Correctly means the maximum impact to them and the minimum impact to us. Agree on what to do exactly and do it.

kisshou -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/9/2006 6:27:57 PM)

I just drove by the station and it is at $3.05 now.

I know a 16 year old who applied at 7 fast food places here and could not get an interview, none of them are hiring.

I really feel a big recession is looming on the horizon.

Termyn8or -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/9/2006 7:17:25 PM)

Recession ? HA ! When the economic shit hits the fan this time it will make the great depression look like an 8% drop in the sale of yachts and Kirby vacuum cleaners.

You gotta realize that the dollar is so propped up now it is no longer a good investment. It's not that it'll fall tomorrow, but when it does it is going to fall really hard. I think we are looking at conditions like they had in pre WW2 Germany, when it took a wheelbarrow full of money to buy a postage stamp. Middle and South American countries resist dollarization, Saddam wanted to switch to Euros. Chinese money is, as far as I know still locked to the dollar, which prevents any gains we might make. I guess you could say they are semi-dollaraized, for the moment. As soon as it is no longer in their best interests that will stop.

We are in very deep shit.

Dtesmoac -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/9/2006 8:00:20 PM)

Ref my earlier input on another thread. The Euro has been a suprising success. its introduction resulted in intitially European countries transferring some of their currency reserves from $ to E. What has now occured is that the strength of the E vs the $ has resulted in other ountries also transferring $ to E. This floods the market with $ and further depresses the value. Europe is very dependent on overseas oil and pays for it in Strong Euros net result an increase in cost of oil h(priced in $) has bigger impact on US than many other countries. The global economy that benefits the US so much cuts both ways.

Boycotting won't solve anything.

Supply is down.

Ability to refine is down.

Demand is up.

So shall prices go up.

Exactly.  It still doesn't quench the mutinous feelings I have against the gas companies though...lol.

Oh, I know; they can still be sneaky shits lol. Saw something on the news last week, the oil companies almost got a huge perk in a law being passed, it would have exempted them from paying some sort of tax. I'm too tired to look it up right now, but the hogs are defintely at the trough.

pantera -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/10/2006 4:48:42 AM)

My car requires the premium gas and I have to do a lot of driving (real estate)-

I don't think it is the function of government to regulate prices.... and I am very thankful it's not- that is what a capitalist society is all about- FREEDOM - when the prices are too high, we will consume less and they will come down eventually- but if we are still buying...

Does policy affect prices?  well sure it does... taxes on gas & intrusive environmentalist restrictions are just two examples... let's keep government as far away from economy as possible, or the prices will be even higher.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/10/2006 6:25:22 AM)

GREAT!

When it gets to $10/gallon traffic should finally be reasonable in LA.

doll -> RE: Gas!!!!!!! (7/10/2006 11:48:43 AM)

It is 3.45/a gallon where I work at....I am in SoCal and they say the prices are going to go up more.
