Hm, never saw a violet wand leave welts, it is a pretty light static discharge, must have been doing something pretty extreme with it to do that.
Electric play generally comes down to a few different types of devices:
-static electricity, usually the infamous "purple wand", looks kind of science fictionish, and it is a lot of fun, not really that painful, more playful. There also are electric flyswatters and such you can find on e-bay.
-Severe jolts, like a cattle prod. I don't recommend then for play, I had one used on me once, it wasn't pleasant and caused me to literally collapse. There also are stun guns and tasers, which I don't recommend playing with (among other things, could be illegal to use, even consensually)
-Pulse dc devices. These generate a pulsed dc signal that can be anything from annoying, to pleasurable, to really painful. Generally used below the waist (they can be used on the chest, but only if the device is dual channel ie has plus and the return on the same side), they are run off 9 volt batteries or a transformer at 9-12 volts. The most common are so called TENS units, which are medical devices (you can get them on Amazon these days for less than 100 bucks for a simple unit), some more fancy ones exist as well. Then there are units like the old PES units and eros tek, that can be pretty expensive but man what you can do with them...all kinds of accessories, including electric vaginal or anal probes that can literally get you to fuck yourself and so forth. The cheapest way to start would be with a tens unit from Amazon, won't cost a lot, and you can't really do serious damage with them:)
