jlf1961 -> Give me a break. (5/3/2014 3:58:02 PM)

It seems that a very nice US based media outlet has posted a warning about something happening in the UK

A warning to subway customers in the US.

Basically telling us subway stores in the UK are taking pork off the menu.

What they dont tell you is that these stores are located in communities with a high Muslim population, that it does not affect all subway stores, and has been going on since 2007.

I am not sure, but I think this is called "marketing."

It might also reflect that the UK has a higher Muslim population (4%) than the US (0.8%).

Oh well, it aint like the Buddhists trying to force everyone to be vegetarians.

My dad worked for Shell about a decade back and he essentially set up the various gas stations being built in different places in Ontario. And at one point my dad asked to do a kind of test to see if they could bring in more revenue in the convenience stores attached to the gas stations. So what he did was he replaced a bunch of the normal candy bars and treats with ones more common to those that the immigrants in the surrounding areas were familiar with, and as a results the profits increased. I agree, it is just marketing, and it's good business. It's not discrimination to have a target customer and trying to cater to what they want.

It's smart to know your target customers, what they want, and then to offer it to them.

it's even more basic than this, if you have pork on the menu you need to keep it in the store. It won't profit if you don't sell it but you're gonna pay the supplier anyway.

I read the headline and got sucked into reading the article. But its the same reason you can get a McVegemite in australia, a McVeggie in India, and McGazpacho in other countries.

And I would not be shocked if the same thing happened in Dearborn Michigan.

At least for a while there were halal Subways here in Chicago. The owner was Muslim and the stores were in a predominantly Muslim area.

I dont have a problem with Halal or kosher restaurants, in fact I would love a kosher deli and bakery to open here in town. You should see the travesty they call a rueben sandwich here.

It would also be nice to have a good German deli around here as well.

You do know you won't get a Rueben at a kosher deli right? Mixing meat and dairy is not kosher.

I know that, I used the rueben in the wrong context. Should have been with the german deli desire. However, a good white fish would be nice, and a couple of other items.

Even the local middle eastern restaurant does not make their own hummus.

Of course there is only one mexican restaurant that makes fresh guacamole, and I am not a fan of guacamole, but I eat what they serve there, it is great tasting.

How is the hummus at the restaurant, though? If it's still a good quality hummus, then what's wrong with that? If it's crappy hummus, though, there should be questions...

Unless they're not making real guacamole, it sounds like you're a fan of fresh guacamole. If they're making a dip that has avocados in it, but not true guacamole, then you just like what they call guacamole. Personally, I'm not a fan of avocados and haven't had a guacamole I can actually say I like. I can put up with some, but I tend to ignore it. I accept it's possible I haven't had good quality guacamole, so I try to taste it at Mexican restaurants before I claim to not like their guacamole.

You poor sod. There is a Lebanese place a block from my house that makes excellent hummus when I'm too lazy to make it myself. It is pretty easy too make if you have a slow cooker. I'll dig up my recipe and post it for you.

Or, you get the corned beef and saurkraut on the bread with the dressing served on a different plate leaving it up to you to be kosher or not.

Why am I remembering the Sepoy Mutiny where the rumor that British military rifle shells were lubricated with pork fat touched off a rebellion?

A Rueben is corned beef, kraut, dressing and swiss cheese on rye. It's the cheese that makes the sandwich not kosher and serving it on the side doesn't change that. A real kosher deli will not serve meat and dairy together ever. The really strict places don't sell cheese or other dairy at all.
