Status: offline 		Just got an Amazon fire TV box. 1 month Netflix free. Thinking about cutting the cable. (Well sattelite if you wanna be picky)
Any one else at this juncture? Or disconnected? Or got close and didnt?

Video games and shit too.

Status: offline 		Meh,never had tv growing up,so never really seen the advantage of paying for it after I moved out on my own... you can find just bout anything you want on the internet these days any way,so why pay for cable or dish if you can watch it on the interwebs for free.

Status: offline 		Cut the cord more than 2 years ago. My only regret was I didn't do it sooner, especially since I hardly ever watch TV.

With a cheap set of rabbit ears, there is so much available OTA that's worth watching. I get about 12 channels total: ABC, NBC, CBS, a handful of Hispanic stations, and 4 channels of PBS where I'd only get 1 with dish or cable. PBS is pretty much all I'm interested in anyway.

Most major networks stream their stuff within 48 hrs, so you can watch online if you're willing to wait a day or two.

As for movies, try Ffilms.org I don't know how long they'll be able to operate, but for now it's truly free movies in HD on demand. Many are even new releases.

Non-amped rabbit ears will pull in most available stations. For more variety and a stronger signal, this item works great even in my rural area:

Status: offline 		I haven't had "live" tv for 4 or 5 years. I'd like it but too expensive. I do watch a lot of DVDs that I get on Black Friday, generally shows I think I'd like or ones I was watching before I lost tv. The thing I miss the most is pop culture, like what movies are coming out. Celebrity gossip and things like that. Now I'll keep current on-line with social / political news, just the current pop stuff I miss. Oh and commercials! It seems stupid, but not knowing what new "thing" is big tends to make someone look odd.

Status: offline 		I haven't had cable since last January, and I haven't missed it a bit. I'll hit the library to watch some of my shows, and I'm happy. I get most of my news online, I don't like streaming, because my poor laptop freezes up, and frankly, most of the programming I have seen is awful, with a few notable exceptions. I don't miss commercials one bit. The only ones worth watching are during the Super Bowl anyway, so I get my fill then.

Status: offline 		We went from the $52 package to the $21 package on Dish. Don't get Syfy or USA but we do get WE and Oxygen and TLC on Saturday nights (Sex sent me to the ER). We still get some religion channels and shopping but we avoid them. Sometimes we get preview channels (AXS had the New Orleans Jazz Fest and we were jamming to it), once in a while GSN or GAC will come on.

I get netflix on the computer, mainly for Doctor Who. Lizard's BF allows me to be on it so we are cool friends about it (I will send him some money to cover my cost on his b'day which is the same as mine).

But when they changed the name to SyFy and became the hokey wrestling and bad reality ghost buster channel, I questioned why I was bothering with cable. Disconnected TV service a few months ago and put up an antenna for the local stations. I haven't missed it too much at all. The programs I like to watch are all available on the net a few days after airing anyway.

I don't do video games so that's not something I look for.. my viewing changes depending on my living situation.. right now uverse 200 is free to me and I like a lot of stuff available on it- hgtv, diy network, one show on sundance, various other channels like bbc, bravo, etc but some of that also streams online too.. before this I was watching on my laptop thru hulu, cracker, network websites, etc.. but you cant fast forward thru the commercials like you can with recorded shows thru unverse.. man, I get sick of all the damn drugs the drug co's push, the damn f'n insurance corps pushing every kinda insurance they can to sheeple masses.. verizon commercials piss me off to.. its nice to be able to fast forward thru them..

my biggest vice for unverse would be hgtv & diy network.. many of those shows I cant get anywhere else, even if I want to buy a season of shows to watch and record, only some are offered.. how much would I pay for that? I don't know.. if I did pay for uverse then I would want my own homebuilt dvr to record the stuff I wanted to keep.. right now I found a few torrents that provide a very limited amount of recorded shows also.. there are movie and tv show torrents online also but I don't bother with those cuz once I watch most of that I don't really care to see it over and over, whats the point?

one thing that ticks me off tho is that Netflix wont let me see what movies, tv shows, etc they have.. yes I know they offer a free trial but I don't want to sign up just to see what they have.. if/when I sign up for the free trial then I want to have my dvr set up first.. and I can wait anyway.. so much other stuff out there for free that I can watch anyway.. if they had most of hgtv & diy network shows I like then I would actually pay for it & be happy with that.. but right now I cant search their database (without signing up) to find that out! argh.. I really hate when companies do that.. I guess they are taking a page out of the politicians handbook- you cant find out whats in it without passing the bill/signing up..

eta- I absolutely hate Dish, no way in hell I will ever pay to use them..

I've not had cable or satellite for well over 10 years now. I actually don't miss it at all. There is just something I find wrong about paying someone $70+ a month to sit on my ass when I can do it for free with regular old digital antenna TV . If there are currently airing shows Id like to watch, Ill watch online from the show's website or I use Hulu/Amazon.

I just bought my neighbor's Wii for a damned good price and it's all set up for their Netflix account plus it's hooked up to the wireless internet they let me use for my internet over here, so I'll probably get into Netflix as well because they told me I could use it that way.

A quick semi-hijack:
Thank you for mentioning the library. This was my go-to for years for movies and shows before streaming became so accessible. At least at my library, the loan times are generous and it is absolutely amazing what they have in the system. No commercials!! Yes, I have to actually go to the library for discs and remember to take them back but it's my pleasure to thank the nice library staff for all they do and run into friends and acquaintances there.

As far as I'm concerned, public libraries are the only MDA-approved use of my tax dollars. Long may they reign. (Though they are becoming more and more digital access hubs for e- and audiobooks, check out what your local library has to offer by way of activities, classes and groups. I had 6 lovely free yoga classes from a library volunteer who was one of the best teachers I've ever had.)

The prices are ridiculous though, and Charter just went all digital, requiring every tv to have one of their boxes. I will put that $80 a month in my pocket. I am glad to read that there is antennae tv available. I have heard that here in the Atlanta area there are plenty of stations available.

Just make sure if you have an older TV (aka big ass old school box TV) that you get one of those digital converter boxes. All the TV stations no longer broadcast in analog and old TVs need the converter to pick up the digital signal. I've got a newer flat screen, so it does it automatically and all I needed was a digital antenna for my TV.

Hey, where else can you get free movies and TV? Granted, I do pay for them with my taxes, but when you do the math, it's less than pennies on the dollar, and I can easily watch an entire season a couple of times during the loan period. About the only issue I could have is having to pause it so I can hit the can.
