Seriously, what is with these people who make profiles but never even log in to read their messages? Annoying.

It might be annoying or disappointing if you take the time to send a message to someone and they don't respond, but try to keep in mind that nobody is obligated to respond to you, or to log in to even read their messages. People have other things going on in their life, so checking their messages might not be a priority for them and that's just fine. And they might just not want to respond to your message, which is also ok; it's their right to do that because nobody is entitled to a response. If they don't respond, don't spend your time worrying about it--take it with a grain of salt and move on.

How would you know whether they are logging in to read their messages or not?

1. You can hover over a message without opening it.

2. You can Hide your last log-in date. Look at their last Journal Entry and see whether it has been updated recently. You can also subscribe to anyone's Journal.
If this is someone who is just here for the fora discussions, then check their forum posts (either click onto from their profile or do a search on this side) for the last date of activity.
No point to message someone who is only maintaining their profile for this reason.

Actually, you CAN find out when they last logged in even if they have elected not to show it. It won't show up in their profile, but if you do a search where their profile is likely to show up, just hover the cursor over the thumbnail, wait a second, and a little box will appear with their info, including when they were last online. The last online info is always there, regardless of whether or not they've elected to hide it in their profile.

Are you talking about if a user is on your Favorites/Admirers list or they've been added as a Friend? I noticed a discrepancy with that once, but I can't remember whether it was due to my updating something on my profile and then appearing in my own Viewed list (which is sorta dumb for it to be set up that way). What kind of search do you mean, exactly?

Actually, even if you do a search for a specific username, if you hover the mouse over the thumbnail, it will tell you when the person was last online. Any time you see the thumbnail (or even just the username if there is no thumbnail), it will give you a box of information and the last bit of info is when they were last online. Doesn't matter who the user is or if they've decided to hide their "last online" status. Of course, if someone has decided to hide their profile (I usually hide mine these days because I'm no longer looking) you won't find it on a search.

I think the only thing that makes me annoyed is taking the time to type out a well thought out message and have it unread, deleted. I know no one is obligated to read it but jee whiz.

Has it occurred to you that people take breaks or leave the site for whatever reason?

Not everyone is checking the site ever few hours hoping that someone, somewhere, will send them a thoughtfully well-worded "hi how r u"

In fairness, women get a LOT of mail.

In real life (not here), I get a few hundred emails a day. No way am I reading them all. They get sorted, and a dozen or so read.

Women get a lot more emails than men ever will. If you want someone to reply to your messages, then you need to stand out against the backdrop of the other 20 men that sent the same person a message.

I haven't had much luck myself, but I did manage to Skype with someone who initially deleted my first message to her without reading it (Deleted Unread). I decided to be persistent and messaged her again, and she said she'd gotten so many rude messages that it made her upset, and she just cleared her whole inbox without reading anything else! But she did read my second message, and we spoke here and then off the site for several days, even though it never went much beyond pleasant conversation. So, you also have to take into consideration the possibility that your messages not being read has a lot to do with their overall experience on the site being just as hit and miss as your own, and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Also, if the site is telling me that someone has read my messages, and just isn't replying back, I'll usually Hide that user to filter them out of my search. There's no point in letting people waste your time, and if that person chooses to miss out on what you have to offer, that's their loss. There's always someone else.

My 2 cents...

If it's a new profile, wait a few weeks before writing the girl. It gives some time for that initial rush of [place expletive here] guys to thin out. If they aren't around that long or never log back in then they probably weren't all that interested in meeting someone anyway...or they were experiencing "sub fever" and picked the first guy that came along. Either way, you're probably not losing out on anything.

We all have a life to look after outside of this forum. Maybe something came up, maybe they found a life partner and didn't remove their profile, maybe they just found that this place isn't for them.

Who knows...

As previous comments said, no one is obligated to be on here, everyone is here on their own free will and time.

Sorry for bringing this back up, but I have to give it to the OP; there are a lot of what seems like dead profiles when you search for people near you.....well at least in my area.
