sexhistory -> Some questions (5/15/2014 6:19:58 PM)

Hi, I was wondering if folks might be interested in participating in my study. if this is inappropriate, please let me know and I will take it down immediately. Well anyways, they often say 'research is me-search,' and that is very much the case for me, as I have developed my own interest in kink over the past year. So much so that it has become a professional and personal interest. If you are willing to take the study there is some information and a link below, if not thats cool too. If you'd like to know the outcome of my study, please send me an email at [Contact Info Removed] and I can put you on my email list and send you a copy of the manuscript when its all done!

I am looking for individuals 18 and over to complete a study called “Sexual History and Erotic Literature.” Specifically, we are looking for individuals that identify as members of the BDSM community, and/or have participated in online or in person BDSM scenes. The present study examines how your sexual history relates to your opinions of erotic literature samples. The study will require that you answer some questions, read two erotic stories, and share your opinions of said stories. Please note that these materials feature graphic content, hence you should only access the survey in private. It will take about 45 minutes to an hour to complete the survey. To access the survey, email [Contact Info Removed] or click on the following link: https://und.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_eyUYSb1ZHbSbY9v

Bhruic -> RE: Some questions (5/15/2014 11:07:39 PM)

Barking up the wrong tree I'd say. The world respects researchers who are willing to get their hands dirty. Get in to the scene and get your data from experience. No one likes a creepy voyeur.

I didn't find this to be true when I was studying Criminology/Psychology and specifically focusing on mass murderers. [:D]

Seriously, I think your point is well taken but I also think that if one person does personal research, not only is it limiting the amount of data that can possibly be collected but it tends to get into the realm of "anecdotal".

Screen captures still RULE! Ya feel me?

Couldn't agree more. I can understand if people in here can feel a bit paranoid at times but at the end of the day, it is up to anyone to decide whether they want to participate or not. It's what I said in another thread already: if you want to perform a scientific study, you need to get lots of data in order to have a clear statistical view. A single person's experience can never be considered to be solid scientific evidence because it is always going to be biased. However, a lot of people's experiences can give researchers a much wider view and distinguish which are the most common cases and which ones are not so common.

Now, this has been unsolicited, but let me say this just in case: from a technical point of view, I can assure you that unless you specifically provide information about yourself, such as name or e-mail address, it is extremely unlikely that someone would be able to discover who you are just by clicking on a link in an Internet forum. The only identifiable personal data that one could get is an IP address, which you are leaving at plenty of other sites already, including CM. Furthermore, since the survey is hosted in Qualtrics, I highly doubt that the OP would have access to the IP addresses of those participating in the survey, let alone to the ISP records, which would be necessary to know who was behind that IP address. If I had any concerns about your kinks being made public, I would start by deleting my CM profile altogether. ;)

@OP: since I don't exactly have a lot of experience, I am not part of your target population. However, I wish you good luck with your study! :)

windchymes -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 5:57:19 AM)

Like "Submission is a gift" and "Fat subs and slaves", "I'm doing a research study" isn't a topic that's well-received in here, sorry.

mnottertail -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 8:22:41 AM)

A survey from UND from a girl in Washington?

I am somewhat familiar with the area surrounding UND and I do not believe they are in the same zip code, nor even the same Sectional Postal Facility.

It won't serve you well to make shit up if you are looking for honest participation.

Therefore, I pass.

sexhistory -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 8:23:21 AM)

I think that is a completely valid point, and I could understand how I might appear creep (I have never posted here and am not being too transparent in my introduction). However, I am limited by my current rural location. if I lived in a different state, I would certainly immerse myself in a scene, as BDSM is a professional and personal interest of mine, but as it stands, I currently live in a rural area, where there is less openness regarding BDSM practice. Thanks for the feedback! :)

sexhistory -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 8:27:12 AM)

I think on top of that, the research has not caught up with practice. So for example, early research from the 60s and 70s only utilized clinical samples (so folks that were diagnosed with a mental disorder) so was very unrepresentative of what BDSM actual is for folks. Recent articles in the past ten years or so have gotten better, but there is definitely a history of specifically psychologists and psychiatrists pathologizing BDSM folk's experience, which has created this bias in the literature.

sexhistory -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 8:29:52 AM)

Yeah, I did my undergrad in Washington and moved to North Dakota for my grad program. I have a bad habit of putting in t my old zip code (I lived in Washington for like 10 years). I could see how that'd look shady.

sexhistory -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 8:32:51 AM)

Good point about the IP addresses, this was actually addressed the Institutional Review Board approved my study! These are deleted, and all data is kept password protected. If anyone, has any other questions or concerns about data being kept safe that I could address, I would be happy to answer them.

DesFIP -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 8:37:26 AM)

Have you read Dr Gloria Brame's works? She doesn't pathologize things and she's pretty much done all the research you want to do.

You would get better responses if you would do this as any other research. Name of your university, link to your supervising professor, and so on.

We get this all the time. We recently had someone say she was doing research but a minute on google turned up that the name she gave belonged to a fisheries expert, not a psychologist.

I appreciate the feedback, I will definitely check out Dr. Brame's Work. All of the information (my supervisor, institution ect.) is in the Informed consent before folks start the study, but I could see how that information would be useful in my original post. For those who are curious. This research is approved by the University of North Dakota Institutional Review Board, and I am supervised by Dr. Sarah Edwards.

BecomingV -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 9:02:04 AM)

Could you add links, please, to the people who can verify what you are doing?

Ohhhhhh ha!
I am sorry I have to kill you now, you see I have this criminology report to do.................

sexhistory -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 9:46:17 AM)

Absolutely! I'd be happy to. Just let me contact my supervisor to let her know whats up, Thanks!

mnottertail -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 9:58:29 AM)

ND has a kink scene. But everywhere rural is where ND is.

Now, having said that, there are a couple munches and whatnot around here, and you gotta travel to hit them.

I am in rural Minnesota that makes your goddamn tumbleweed blown grey clay gumbo look like Metropolis, even if you live in Ft. Totten. But you to be at UND you are in GF or Minot. Now with the GIs there, there are gonna be kinky clubs around there, them air jockeys gonna want some twisted bitches.

So, the zip has nothing to do with your selecting washington on your profile, but you say whether you are in GF or Minot, I will see whats there for munches.

Nakhla -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 12:25:01 PM)

I don't want to dogpile, but yeah, the survey thing might not be the best approach to get to know the community. [:D]

I did try taking it, but I was rather derailed at the story part. I didn't find the story at all interesting, so all the data I entered was the neither yes nor no for it because it didn't do anything for me. Maybe a "if you can relate/were interested/aroused by this, please answer the following, if not, skip to next" option?

I was reminded of my mother getting a phone survey about turkey at a time when she was vegetarian. At the beginning of it she openly told the survey person that she didn't eat turkey, but they insisted she tell them what was her favorite part. She said "The part that ISN'T THERE," Which kind of sums it up for me at the moment.

DesFIP -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 12:53:55 PM)

I started it but I have a huge problem with studies that assume this is pathological. So much so that I refuse to complete them.

Asking if people are sex offenders for instance. All those questions about people having unsupportive relationships; fear of abandonment, etc.

You're approaching this from the pov that people who do this are unhealthy while claiming to hope to find evidence to the contrary. Yet the DM V clearly states that an attraction to s & m is not a problem overall although it may be in certain people. Such as shoe fetishists who spend all their money on shoes and can't pay rent.

Moreover, I don't know a clinical psychologist who would assume this is ipso facto an unhealthy attraction.

In terms of how the questions go, they seem disjointed. Usually you group them so that all the strongly disagree ones about strength of a relationship are together. Yours are all over the board and it comes across as amateurish.

sexhistory -> RE: Some questions (5/16/2014 3:16:00 PM)

Hey there,

You are more than welcome to email my supervisor Dr. Sarah Edwards at [email protected]. If you would like further verification she can hook you up with whoever else might be appropriate.

Thanks so much!

I honestly don't mind the feedback, this is my first study that I am doing on my own. I have done plenty of other research but studying BDSM can be challenging because it has such a wide range (as you said with your Mother's experience of getting a survey on Turkey when you are a vegetarian). So this is a learning experience for me, and I appreciate your comments! :)
