Currently considering building a soundproof padded room out of one of my spare closets. Anyone know if theres a "how to" out yet or what kind of materials suggested?

I might need to go through some VHS tapes but I think I have that episode of The New Yankee Workshop somewhere.

How big is the closet? how sound proof does it need to be ?

I have had 3 dungeons soundproofed in the past. The first was a disaster because it was put together by an amateur who swore he knew what he was doing.

As far as padded walls, all you need is vinyl sheets, chipboard, covering foam and a staple gun and once the boards are upholstered ( a mornings work) fix them to the stud work in your newly soundproofed room.

I still do a fair amount of carpentry work and build furniture. A lot of the design depends on how much noise you plan on making in decibels level. On the cheap side add a layer of "quiet rock" drywall over the existing drywall on BOTH sides of the wall. The second way would be to rip out the old drywall put in sound battens then cover it with "quiet rock". Don't forget to cover the outlets with "sound putty".

Doing it the second way, you could be playing drums and hardly hear it on the other side of the wall. Hope this help and good luck.

It's not a new product various forms of this type of drywall has been around for 20 plus years. Putting the "sound battens" are far more effective at reducing noise than "quiet rock".

Not the cheapest approach, but very similar to materials used by facilities for their padded cells. Here is the link for one: Wrestling Mats
