This was brought up earlier on another website about which disease you would hide from your family and friends because you fear that they won't support you.

I suffer with one of that list posted - arthritis (osteo). I don't hide it, it's part of my daily life. .. I have some good days, some bad days with it, overall though, my days are good. If I had anything else on that list would I hide it from family, friends or a partner? No. It's important for me to be accepted by those in my life for who I am, not who they would like me to be. .. including any limitations, it's a more freeing relationship when that's the case.

Most of the people on here know I suffer from Bipolar (maniac phrase right now or was it just working out in the yard too hard yesterday), PTSD, arthritis (DJD) and fibromyalgia. I take 3 pills for the mental illnesses, one for high cholesterol, one for edema and several supplements. I am getting my nerves in my lower right back and hip burn on Friday because it is hard to stand up for a while, especially if I am doing dishes or am laying down the wrong way in bed.

I don't hide Fibromyalgia generally....I do not mention it in applications but I am not afraid to mention it once I am working there, if it appears to be necessary....as it does not affect my work itself...

At one job 2 years ago my actually arsey boss tried to use it against me....she surely looked it up and did not know about it by herself and dared to use it against me, sort of "maybe this field of work is too stressfull for you"....snort...

Though it just made it more clear to me, to what length she was going in her attempts to put me down and therefore she made herself look damn ridicioulus, trying to use it against me...even more so as she has no idea how much it does impact me and in which way (as it does, in the end, differs from person to person....)

None of the above. Because if they aren't going to give me the support I need, then why am I wasting time with them?

Speaking from the family and friends pov though, what I need is to see that they are trying to follow treatment as much as possible.

My grandfather died from his diabetes, but ate cookies all the time, causing him to die early. His choice, but it made being supportive of him pretty impossible when he didn't support himself.

My parents were a very good "negative barometer" in a lot of ways.

To give credit where credit is due; they did instill in me and incredibly strong devotion to family.

My travels in life have shown me that we can, indeed, choose our family. While my family does consist of some blood relations, it is mostly made up of people with whom I do not share any genetics.

I said all of that to say that there is nothing I would keep from my family and I keep absolutely NO SECRETS from my partners.

None of the above. If you can't live in reality, what's the point in living at all?

I don't think I would hide any of that ....I "might" not mention an STD to my family IF the condition had few or no obvious symptoms. I mean.....if it's not something they're going to notice and there is no risk of my transmitting it to them...why do they need to know? Although I would definitely not hide an STD from an intimate partner.

Other than that....I would be very open and honest about having such conditions because I would want certain people to know about my condition in case there were ever any kind of emergency.

Another condition you didn't mention on the list is epilepsy. Epilepsy still has a bit of a social stigma to it. But I have epilepsy and I am very up front and honest about it. It is one thing I mention very early on to any potential partners, even though my seizures are very well controlled, it is still something I think they need to be aware of "just in case". It also helps me gauge a part of their personality. It will tell me very early on if they are one of the people who don't understand epilepsy and look at it in a negative manner....and that will help me decide if I really want to develop a relationship with them.

This.

Granted, I don't suffer any of it so ........

If anything, perhaps the type 2 diabetes because I know that can be avoided/controlled by behaviour and I would be ashamed that I lived in an unhealthy way. Similarly with the STDs.

No....Type 2 diabetes cannot ALWAYS be avoided or controlled through lifestyle or behavior. I have known MANY adults who are HWP and have a relatively healthy diet and still develop it. And what about women who develop gestational diabetes that doesn't go away after the child is born?

I always wonder about GD that does not go away after childbirth. One year, Mom had a child that was born with diabetes in the Nursery. The entire staff cared so much for the child that when it came to 'adopt' a child for the year, they chose him. I wonder what has happen to him since then.

My stepsister is pretty skinny (or at least she was when she was having her kids....haven't seen her in over 10 years). She got GD with her first pregnancy that went away after the child was born, but when she got pregnant the second time, she developed GD again and it never went away.

My father on the other hand....DOES have type II that is definitely affected by his weight. If his weight goes above a certain point he becomes diabetic....but if he loses enough weight and can keep it off, it goes away. A lot of people develop weight induced type II and then they lose weight but it never goes away.

I would hide all but arthritis and diabetes 1 from some of my family members, but probably none of them from my friends. Might not bring it up, but I wouldn't hide it either. The thing with friends is that if they treat me badly for something I have no or only partial control over and don't respond when I explain why that's no good, I can ditch the friendship. The situation with family members is more complicated.

I did not want to stress you out, sweetie. You got enough on your plate.

How are the treatments going?

I didn't vote because I wouldn't hide any of these conditions. I also agree with sexyred1 that cancer should have been included, as well as hepatitis. In fact, any addictions should be disclosed to a potential date, play partner and/or potential mate, whether it's to alcohol, pain-killers, other forms of substance abuse, along with activities like gambling, porn, and frequenting sex workers. One has to weigh one's privacy considerations with the rights of others as to what constitutes a Need-To-Know basis.
