jlf1961 -> I guess since Climate Change is a myth, this is a dumb idea? (5/20/2014 3:56:45 PM)

This Glass Sphere Could Revolutionize Solar Power on Earth

We all know that the sun is the greatest sustainable energy source available on Earth, but we're not quite at the stage where we're using it to the highest potential. The majority of PhotoVoltaic panels across the globe have a performance of just 15% or lower, and if these panels aren't tracking the movement of the sun in the sky, they are losing even more power throughout the year. Solar energy is not yet as efficient as it should be.

Andre Broessel, a German architect living in Barcelona, has the solution. He wants to "squeeze more juice out of the sun." That's why he created Rawlemon.

I mean if climate change and peak oil is a myth, then we really dont need something like this, right?

Why does it matter if climate change or peak oil are myths?

Most of what I could find said something about "crowdfunding." By golly, methinks there might be something to this private sector capitalism thingy...

Two thoughts:
1. Very cool looking design, and I sure hope it works out.
2. That's A LOT of glass.

Seriously, the aesthetics are awesome. If it works as the stated, it will also create energy from moon light (or, from sunlight reflected off the moon), which is quite an interesting idea. Hopefully the dual axis tracking system doesn't use up much power, and that creating kajillions of glass orbs doesn't ruin the whole "carbon reduction" strategy of solar power.

That looks really interesting and would be VERY useful in Australia. We also have a LOT of desert here where solar farms could be sited.
Oops, I forgot, our wonderful prime minister (who is some kind of demi-god in his own mind) says there is no such thing as climate change and even solar power is something from the devils handbook.
your not going to believe this but his name is Abbot and one of his great friends is an ex-treasurer called Cosyello. I will leave the rest to your fertile imaginations.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: I guess since Climate Change is a myth, this is a dumb idea? (5/20/2014 4:26:22 PM)

Sorry, that was meant to be Costello but I got waylaid before I could edit it.
And if you look at a pic of our current treasurer, you will see why he is known as 'Shrek in a Suit'

Heliotropic tracking has been done for decades. So has been using fresnel lenses or mirrors to concentrate solar power.

Bottom line: solar power even with heliotropic tracking is still not cost effective.

And....regardless of who is right, it no longer matters.

We can do better.

This whole "blame game" is a waste of ink.

We can do better.

Gee it seems to be cost effective at a Spanish solar power site.... Guess you need to tell them their accounting is wrong or a lie.

Please provide which spanish site.
If you raise the cost of electricity high enough .. you can make solar competitive.. but then your industry and consumers dependent thereon are not.

Happy to provide statistics if you provide the source.

jlf1961 -> RE: I guess since Climate Change is a myth, this is a dumb idea? (5/20/2014 6:57:27 PM)

Spainish solar power providers

I was wrong about the type, but it is cost effective.

Ah yes, PS10. Although y'all poo-poo the various studies of spanish renewables.. hows this..

http://elpais.com/elpais/2014/01/01/inenglish/1388590410_230748.html

All electricity producers are paid at the rate of the MOST expensive producer for that day. In other words as I indicated before .. if you make the electricity cost enough, solar can be competitive.

Renewable producers love it. Greens love it. Consumers and industry.. not so much.

The PS 20 just came online, and it is an improvement over the PS10, or did you skip that part?

I think, like Germany, their standard electricity rates are pretty stiff in Spain Jlf (not sure...but I think I read that somewhere recently).

Frankly, while I'm not one of the "save the whales/tree hugger" types, I kind of wish they'd raise rates enough here to make some of these things "affordable". I know that's a total hypocrisy as to honest value, but we just need to find some way to lessen the pollution we create. It's not healthy.

Well, it's gonna take a long time for the scientists it figure it all out. I suspect we're not much farther away than 50 years from some pretty smart guy figuring out some kind of mega cheap energy, and all of this is part of the process to get there.

What blame game was in my post?

I am very supportive of the private sector taking the reins and making stuff like this happen.

Perhaps you could point out when that has been done in the field of photovoltaics in the past 50 years?
Haven't the advances come because of govt. investment?

Does the fact that these two technologies have existed for a long time change the fact that this individual has combined them in a unique fashion?

Not cost effective as opposed to what?
Solar pannels are currently available for about $1 dollar a watt.
How is that not cost effective?

Who told you climate change was a myth? I have heard a lot of people say that st gore and his cronies were less than honest and I have even heard a few suggest they are crooks, but I have never heard anyone claim climate change was a myth. And what difference does it make in any case. Isn't it common sense to find cheaper and more efficient ways of creating energy? And isn't it also common sense to take care of the planet we call home? But then again I suppose just talking about spomething without taking a swipe at someone wouldn't be any fun, would it? Maybe the next thread could be on vegetarians and their obsession with cow farts and chicken fetuses.

Um, you can see the GOP politicians list here

Or FOX news stand denying climate change

I could go on, but you really want to take the stand that nobody says that climate change is a myth?

The links I looked at had a lot of people who argue how much man plays a role in climate change but I didn't see any that said there was no climate change. And that was your claim. That they are denying climate change. So who said that?
