Fact: In Australia, anyone may get free of charge a copy of the Australian Constitution from either their local Electral Office or from the office of their Elected Federal Representitive (of either House).

Factual Incident:
A few of years ago when Neets and I started to live together, I needed to refer to the Constitution on a matter of Constitutinal Law pertaining to religions. I rang my local Electoral Office and requested a copy of the Australian Constitution. I established that I was talking to the senior clerk and was asked by her if the Australian Constitution was a new novel or play.. .. It took me over fifteen minutes on the phone to explain what it was to her and another ten minutes to verify what I was saying was correct. After a few more moments I was told that she would have to locate one and send it out to me.

It duely arrived with a cover note that enclosed was the copy of the new play I had asked for.....This would be like asking a clerk on a Taxation Office for a copy of the latest tax regulations and the clerk not knowing what Taxation regulations were.... At least our American cousins are well aware of their Constitution.

It pisses me off that to get freedom of information documents, costs money!
All these documents were created with taxpayer money!!!
They should be free to get for any taxpayer, just cost of printing and paper charged.

It can cost thousands of dollars here to get a government document through the freedom of information act.

FREEDOM????

Every damn thing the government puts to record should be accessible on free websites unless classified. One instance of it being deseminated through freedom of information should have it then put on the public website.

I think this is a winnable lawsuit!!! We paid for ever damn document, we own them!

I don't know how this got to be a self quote. But I was typing angrily.

It is but I needed the complete copy and not an abridged one which is more than likely what I'd get knowing Australian Government departments... I was arguing the case that Magna Carta is still revelent and is not superceeded when we became a Federation. Untill then British Naval Law wass the legal rule here.

Dunno Iron...from my experience, most Americans are only aware of the 1st, 2nd, and 5th Admendments...(Freedom of Speech, Right to bear arms, and finally, "I plead the 5th on the grounds it might incriminate me........" ) Therefore, I like to be a lil' pain in the arse and ask, "What is the 22nd Admendment to the US Constitution?" I get a puzzled look and in reply I state, "Term Limits"

well - in "A well-regulated militia ..." When I was in the Home Guard, I was issued a H&K G-3 and 100 rounds, machin-gunners got 500 rounds. OTOH it was in the days of Cold War and living just next to the late USSR. Other than that, guns are regulated. I believe that Switzerland have the same opinion and have more fully automatic rifles in privat homes per 1000 inhabitants than in the US and yet less killings. But I don't live in the US of A.

Interesting Peter. It is true that even though Americans use the 2nd admendment and own less guns per capita than your country and even Canada....our crime rate using guns is higher. (Shrugs shoulders).

Our constitution has been moved to the Presidential lavatory.  Gas is on the rise and toilet paper is in short supply.

Only a few Americans in 100 can name all of the Amendments in the Bill of Rights.. this is the most pertinent part of the constitution to any American. To be honest, I forgot the one about quartering soldiers, but I did know all the rest off the top of my head. We are just as sad as you blokes from down under.. smiles

This sort of relates.  If  you want to scare yourself- watch the History channel when they present Hitler: The Color of War.

When he was democratically elected, the first thing he did was banish free speech, free press, and free assembly. He established a common enemy.  He decried that his detractors were unpatrioltic and treasonous.  He felt the disabled should also be eliminated along with the "enemy" for a stronger purification of the race.   He even created a new religon and INSISTED that is be the new order of the counrty.  Sort of sounds familiar.

Funny you should say that because one of the first things he did is alos the ban on civilian owned fire arms. Who leads the way for firearms bans and restrictions? Democraps!  the Republiturd arent far behind.

"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
-- Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials

Times haven't changed, nor have tastes.

It's worth comparing gun related deaths between countries. This site has comparisons between the richest 36 countries. The USA is top in gun deaths. The top European countries with gundeaths are in those countries that allow guns to be kept at home, namely Estonia, Finland and Switzwerland. Northern Ireland comes with that group but effectively there was a civil war at the period of assembling the stats but still they had less than half the gun deaths per 100,000 than the USA. The countires that come out best in the European figures are Britain followed closely by Holland and Spain which have figures less than 14 times per 100,000 the amount of gundeaths in the USA.

The right to bear arms is effectively the right to kill your fellow countrymen.

Er...in Britain and Holland which have had democratic governments (relative to periods in history) longer than the USA, there is still no sign of jackboots marching.

About a small handful of people lead the way for firearms bans and restrictions.

A larger number seem to be for regulation and registration for legal ownership.
