Unless the class is teaching religion, then it should be left out of the conversation and that goes both ways. Priests regularly get up in front of people - including soldiers - and 'teach' them that Our Lord will look after them, etc, etc, etc. They've done so for centuries. Atheists have also been annoyed for centuries by this and for many entirely understandable reasons, but have learned not to get up and punch them for it. Especially soldiers, in fact - because these realise that they're not meant to attack the citizens that they're meant to be protecting.

From childhood onward most of us in predominately Christian societies get taught Christianity, THB. At school, at home ... everywhere, and whether we like it or not. It really does impact on the story, yes. This is because comparing and contrasting is one of the most fundamental ways of exercising the critical faculties.
