Phi Gamma Delta hosts annual "Islander" parties at universities across the nation to raise money for charities and research organizations.

The Phi Gamma Delta fraternity [at] the University of California - Irvine (UCI) has been accused of racism against Pacific Islanders for hosting a fundraiser where students wore grass skirts and coconut bras... The petition also demands that the group change its nickname, Fiji, - which comes from the phonetic pronunciation of the group’s first letter “Phi” and the “G” from the last letter, Gamma - because it is racist ~Source

So far no bodies have been found.

Damn! I was gonna do the grass skirt and coconut bra thing for an ukulele cover next month on Youtube.

Of course that would more likely be considered a crime against humanity, rather than just simple racism...

That makes me wonder, were little non-Polynesian ("howlie") girls like me being indoctrinated into racist thinking when we were taught hula dancing by the native Hawaiian Islanders? We had to wear grass skirts, flower leis, and mock bikini tops in loud, bright tropical colors. Or perhaps it was a calculated sexist scheme to turn us into nubile nymphos via learning erotic dance moves? [8D]

It's getting to the point where I hear the word racist and automatically think it's going to be another bullshit claim. And in this case I guess I would be right.

Pretty soon you won't be able to host a cultural theme party without getting accused of being racist. What's next--locale-based theme weddings (not of one's own ethnicity), Halloween costumes?

Emulating a cultural heritage is not denigrating it. Should fraternities and sororities be prohibited from using Greek letters next, if not located in Greece?

I do wish folks would stop overusing the R-word before it loses all meaning entirely.

That said, the costumes do sound a bit stereotypical, and I can understand how they might irk a modern Fijian. I feel a similar annoyance when stereotypical "Americans"--loud, rude, stupid, perhaps topped in ten-gallon hats--appear in British movies and TV shows.

The "Improvements?" episode of the Britcom As Time Goes By offers a double-edged look at Anglo-American stereotypes. Start at 10:34.
