Status: offline 		Due to MetroPCS's switch from CDMA to new GSM system, I had to buy a new phone compatible with GSM.

I chose the LG Optimus L6. It's quite deficient in onboard storage (as were all the lower-end phone choices) but I was reassured by customer service that apps/audiobook content could be transferred to SD card, and most of the bloatware removed. If that were true, the measly 1.2 GB onboard storage wouldn't have been a problem since I have a 32GB card in there to move things to.

Well, I can't transfer ANY EFFING THING to the SD card without rooting the phone. It simply will not let me. Memory hogging (and unwanted) Google+, Play, Books, Movies, Music and other non-removable Metro and Google bloatware have used up all the memory, CANNOT be moved, permanently disabled or removed and now the phone sends me nasty-grams to make more space.

The idea of my rooting a phone is frightening indeed, especially THIS phone which is notorious for being difficult to root. I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I've looked up instructions on several of the Android boards and they're all different, with one method working for someone and not for others with the same phone. There is also an issue of phone arriving with the latest software upgrade so older root methods won't work any longer. The phone has to be reverted back to the older operating system, then rooted, then upgraded to the new system.

I got all gung ho and downloaded the various programs to PC that would help root this sucker. Nothing unfolded the way it should and I gave the f*ck up before I bricked it for good. At the moment, it's stock.

Still, it's gotta happen. Rooting voids the phone warranty, but it's nearly useless without being able to get stuff moved off internal storage. Any suggestions for finding someone confident who knows their stuff?

Status: offline 		One reason I tend to by jailbroken and rooted phones off eBay rather than get stuff from a network.

Status: offline 		Beware you get one that uses the frequencies for the providers in your country.

I once got a GSM phone that claimed to work with AT&T but was different frequencies. Ever see a phone works on 2.5G instead of 3G? I have one.

Status: offline 		I've rooted two phones now - time consuming, but do-able. Both sets of instructions I got from Xda Developers. Vital, of course, that you get the right instructions for your make, model *and* country. These instructions have been very, very detailed.

In the UK there are lots of little mobile phone repair shops that'll unlock phones. I should imagine they can root phones too.

Status: offline 		Pe, I haven't been able to find any electronic shops willing to do it. In the US, rooting voids the warranty and nobody wants to be responsible for that.

I had a go at xda, which seemed to have the most up-to-date postings on the matter and couldn't get it to work for my phone. I'm almost ready to do a CL post looking for someone.

Seems like an issue that customer service should fix or they should replace the phone you have with one that will work as promised.

I agree, Angelika, and so does Metro who will be happy to do so for $499 (Galaxy Mega or S4) which has more on-board storage.

After buying the phone and running out of memory within 3 days, customer service basically told me to root it on my own or upgrade to a (much) more expensive phone. This is a pre-paid all-you-can-eat service for $40 a month. They don't really care if you stay or not, because they know your alternative option is get an expensive contract which STILL has individual phone issues unless you go for the $500 model. It is too late to return the current phone. Other than the memory issue, I really like it and as hard as I am on things (and lose stuff) it doesn't make sense to get a $500 phone when this one will be quite nifty after an eventual root job.

I had an LG Motion w/Metro and that was the BEST little smartphone EVER! 4GB of onboard storage, and you could move almost everything over to SD. Unfortunately, soon the Motion will no longer work since they are phasing out the CDMA network to go with GSM.

Jeez, I hate electronic change.

The websites all talk about transferring to SD with this phone. I'd try it with another SD card (if that's not already been tried); if that doesn't work, get a refund.

ETA. Ah. MDA can't because the phone's beyond its guarantee period. Is that correct, MDA?
