....but are interested because of the prospect of a possible Triple Crown winner this year....

I was just doing a little self-education and learned something I never knew before....

"A Thoroughbred is a horse whose parentage traces back to any of the three "founding sires": the Darley Arabian, Byerly Turk and Godolphin Barb, and who has satisfied the rules and requirements of The Jockey Club and is registered in The American Stud Book or in a foreign stud book recognized by The Jockey Club and the International Stud Book Committee".

So I started reading about the Darley Arabian and how over 90% of registered Thoroughbreds can be traced back to this one stallion. There's a really cool website where you can see how California Chrome is related to Secretariat and how Secretariat is a direct stallion offspring of the Darley Arabian. You can put in any Thoroughbred's name and see it's entire ancestry and how they all end up back at the Darley Arabian or the Byerly or Goldolphin. If you've ever heard of a horse named "Man o' War" who was famous right after World War I ....his is primarily form the Godolphin, but he also had a bit of Darley in him as well.

If you're curious.... http://www.pedigreequery.com/?query_type=horse

I also think it's fascinating how many of us (including myself) don't have our own family histories at our fingertips so easily.

Kind of bummed that California Chrome didn't get the Triple Crown....<sigh>

What do you think about Steve Coburn's comment:

""If you've got a horse that earns points to run in the Kentucky Derby, those 20 horses that start the Kentucky are the only 20 eligible to run in all three races," he said."

Personally I kind of agree with him....I mean....if they are still going to treat it like "the Triple Crown" then any horse that runs in the Preakness should be required to have run in the Derby, and any horse that runs in the Belmont should be required to have run in the first 2 races. He has a point....if a horse that runs in the Belmont didn't run in the first 2 races....or any other races in those same weeks, then they are going to have a much better chance of winning because they aren't going to be as tired.

Does anyone know.....did this used to be a rule and was just changed in recent years? Was this ever the case that horses that ran the Preakness had to be in the Derby and horses that ran in Belmont had to run the first 2 races of the Triple Crown?

The Belmont requires more stamina than the Derby and Preakness. Yet horses today are bred solely for speed without thinking about stamina. And that's why a triple crown winner is so rare.

As far as requiring that every horse that's entered in the Derby also enters the Preakness and the Belmont, nonsense. The fact that this is so difficult is what makes a triple crown winner so valuable. If you eliminated the pitchers mound, batters would get a lot more home runs, but the batters wouldn't be better than they now are.

Man o War was amazing. His owner didn't believe you should run a three year old so early in the year, so he never won the Triple Crown. He did however win both the Preakness and the Belmont. Which means that as far back as 1919 it was not necessary to run all three races. The Derby obviously wasn't quite as big a to do back then or his owner might have decided to race him. I think Coburn is just whining. If you watched the Belmont, Chrome got a bad trip. I attribute it to his jockey more than the fact that he wasn't fresh. Had Coburn said something before the race was run, I might care about him, but the fact that he waited to complain until after Chrome lost makes me think he is a sore loser.

No, another horse stepped on Chrome, injuring his foot or hoof. That is a 2 week recovery period there. I hate it when the horses get too crowded together...all sorts of things can happen.

Sir Barton, the 1919 winner of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, captured the series before anyone called it the Triple Crown. According to racing scholar Bennett Liebman, the deputy secretary for racing and gaming in New York, the term was used to describe other American races as far back as 1894.

This whole "sport" is grotesque. This is the true side of horse racing. http://horseracingwrongs.com/2014/06/08/california-chrome-mercilessly-whipped-while-injured/
