Thanks for that, Des. Unfortunately, I haven't got any white distilled vinegar or essential oils. To clarify: I forgot to buy any fabric conditioner today and it's now too late. However, I do have hair conditioner, hence the question.

I'm deeply grateful for the cmails I've been receiving on this matter from kind lady friends.

However, may I gently remind everyone that I am a *bloke*? If I had the forethought to have things like white vinegar, essence of Madagascan lime, castor oil, grated Tanzanian fruit bats' testicles etc etc in my cupboards, wouldn't I also have the forethought to have fabric conditioner in them?

To hell with it. I'll just spray my more stinky clothes with deodorant. Tried and trusted remedy.

No problem. Just dump it in with the clothes in the dryer. Works great.

You can substitute cider vinegar for white and vice versa. I wouldn't try a wine vinegar or balsamic though.

Why do you need fabric conditioner? Do you want to put perfume in the clothing? Or, are you trying to get wrinkles to fall out easier?

Fabric conditioners are usually parrafin based or some petrochemical analog to parrifin. Then there is emoluents and perfume added to make you think it actually does something.

Try rubbing a rag with parrifin and tossing in the dryer. That is all dryer sheets are and it helps the wrinkles to fall out by neutralizing static charge. A washcloth and a candle works too. Just rub some wax on the cloth and toss in the dryer.

That's interesting. Thanks. Now you mention it, I've never really thought that much about what fabric conditioner actually does or how it does it.

Anyway, I used a bit of hair conditioner. My clothes are drying on the line as I write - they're clean and don't feel like sandpaper. I'm happy enough.

I've got a dim memory of my family not even using fabric conditioner when I was a young kid. We all survived regardless ....

I have used a wet washcloth, with about a tablespoon of hair conditioner many times for fabric softener. Works great. Wet the washcloth, wring out some. put the conditioner in the middle of it and kinda squeeze to spread out the conditioner, throw in the dryer.

I used white vinegar for the dingy stains under the white shirts. We use it for killing weeds and grass along the trailer now.

You shouldn't buy your fruit bat testicles pre-grated. It might save a little time but you're really losing out on freshness. I know you're a bloke so you might not have realised.

And if you have trouble with whites turning yellow; add borax to the wash.
Most yellowing is minerals getting bound up in the fabric. Borax helps sulfates and nitrates in hard water stay in solution and wash out of the clothing. (From the U.S.Navy cleaning standards. How to keep summer whites actually white for inspections.)
