Not just the nasty personal attack on this young woman. The obvious fundraising, advertising, conspiracy theories and other pettiness associated with this panel as well.

I actually like Al Jazeera America, or at least some of their Youtube vids.. I certainly don't consider the vids I saw as "enemy propaganda".. As far as ya'll being "better than this".. apparently not if this is what goes on.. [8|]

joether -> RE: Shouldn't we be better than this? (6/17/2014 7:54:25 AM)

When I listen to the 'low information voter' as a conservative complain why Muslims around the world did not attack those that attacked the United States (on 9/11/01) nor apologize for those 19 'radicals'; I ask why they have not attacked those that attacked the United States (on 4/19/95) nor apologize for those 2 'radicals'. To the Muslim world outside the United States, the events of 9/11/01 is as much on their 'radar' as 4/19/95 is on the average conservative's 'radar'. Which is to say, non-existent. Both dates were of terrorists blowing stuff up and killing/wounding many people.

Conservatives attack the 'Muslim Brotherhood', and other organizations that want power through intimidation with arms; yet, that's exactly the same attitude we see from organizations like The Tea Party. The people that make up both these groups of people care nothing for civilization, making good compromises, and building a better world for those to come in the future. Both groups push fear, hatred, and intolerance. The desire to build good cities, promote better living of the people within those cities, and the infrastructure needed for the people and cities to thrive....is a non-existent topic to both groups.

So this latest grouping at the Heritage should not come as a surprise to anyone that understands not just the history by the psychology that is just below the surface of the history. These Muslim radicals, like conservative radicals, thrive on having an enemy to fight. It becomes a 'football game' to them, in that one side had to win for another to lose (i.e. a Zero Sum Game). For this group of Muslims, its 'Western Culture'; For conservatives, its what President Obama represents (intelligence, education, patience, wisdom, being human). I like to think the reason why such groups never obtain real power for long, is due to the numerous amount of people that wish for more 'good' in the world. That good should always triumph over evil. Reality is that most people just wish to be allowed to raise their families, be good neighbors, and have a good life is peace.

Conservatives have used this 'Benghazi' issue to attack and threaten impeachment of the President. Yet, never once did any of these same conservatives hold the previous President of the United States to such in-depth and long-term scrutiny over and of the 13 'Benghazi' like events during his administration. So they have no real credibility. And that this is all theater towards the American people because they have NOTHING else to offer the nation right now.

We can...they can't. The right of today is of no use and nothing but partisan shrill...corrupt and intolerant vitriol.

One thing that stood out in this article was the response from this one person:

quote:

Panelist Brigitte Gabriel of a group called ACT! for America pounced. She said “180 million to 300 million” Muslims are “dedicated to the destruction of Western civilization.” She told Ahmed that the “peaceful majority were irrelevant” in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and she drew a Hitler comparison: “Most Germans were peaceful, yet the Nazis drove the agenda and as a result, 60 million died.”

How is the figure of 180-300 million calculated? How dedicated are they to the destruction of Western civilization? There are probably many who have grievances against the West, but of that number, how many would really seek the destruction of Western civilization? More importantly, do they even have the means to carry out such a plan?

Comparisons to Hitler seem faulty, at best, although it seems to work for getting the crowds revved up. Hitler was good at working the crowd, and even today, invoking Hitler's name seems to work with some people. I'm not sure why. But the Muslims and the Nazis are not the same thing. Perhaps there might be some similarities with Pan-Arab nationalism - although if that's the real threat, then perhaps it can be addressed on that level.

Politesub53 -> RE: Shouldn't we be better than this? (6/18/2014 4:48:29 PM)

It isnt a calculated figure, just one picked out of the air by this obnoxious woman. I get that her views come from being raised during the Lebanese civil war but that doesnt allow her, like some posters here, to make grand generalisations about every muslim.

The Right has always been shrill and intolerant with regard to lesbians such as yourself, THB. As always, I'm baffled as to why you jump in to defend it. The Right *does not like* people like you. It never has. It's always made this abundantly clear. What gives?

I was pointing out the irony of him bitching about partisan shrill. I wasn't defending anything.

I didn't respond before because I see no irony at all.

I'm "the right" and I like people like her. I don't like her, but people like her, yes. Absolutely.

Really, I'm on the right but have lived with a female/female couple for over 10 years now.

One might want to make sure their closet is clean before trying to spread a load of shit with sweeping statements... Oh yeah, I guess all of us righties who disagree with Obama are racist bigots too.[8|]

SadistDave -> RE: Shouldn't we be better than this? (6/19/2014 1:25:33 AM)

Not that I'm surprised, but I noticed that WaPo didn't include any video links. I guess it would be inconvenient to give their readers a chance to find out how full of shit Dana Milbank really is...

Interestingly enough, Breitbart DID include video. The video of the exchange is completely different than the bullshit described in DomKens link. No surprises there either...

I took a look at the video posted by SadistDave, and apparently, her information comes from the "intelligence agencies" that 15-25% of Muslims are radicals. And she did "pounce," contrary to the description provided by Breitbart. Her tone was definitely confrontational and of an emotional nature.

I've been reading the Wash. Post since long before WaterGate and I have NEVER seem ANY video links for an op-ed piece.

Milbank seems to have gotten the quotes correct and tone right. There was nothing polite about Gabriel's reply.

ROFL!

If this is pouncing on someone, you lot must be apoplectic about Hillary's book tour!

You didn't find it inappropriate for the panelist to respond to the question asked politely in a calm voice with a tirade that ended with her almost yelling? The rest of the panel clearly did.

SadistDave -> RE: Shouldn't we be better than this? (6/20/2014 7:45:43 AM)

You mean, of course, the woman who "immediately pounced" 4 full minutes after the question was asked and someone else had responded. You mean, of course, the woman who later said that she was glad the Muslim woman asked her question, thanked her for her participation and recieved thunderous applause for her empassioned response.

You mean the panel whe were so upset that they applauded as well.

Oh, and of course we cannot forget the alleged victim, who also recieved applause when she jokingly conceded that she was the defacto leader of the Muslim peace movement by virtue of the fact that she was the only Muslim present...
