Old school enema.... Before the advent of all the high tech fever reducers and chemical laxatives (pre 1930s) the enema was quite a popular player on the roster of Doctor's procedures. Common enema, for bound up bowels was a salt water enema. Not talking brine but a 0.7N solution, same salinity as body fluids. Plain water or very salty mucks with the electrolyte balance in the body. For a very very thorough cleaning, like before surgery, an Epsom salts enema was called for. These days sodium citrate (Fleet's Enema - yes it isn't a brand name but named for a doctor) is more likely to be used clinically than the Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salts). Now the cute one was used for heat stroke; the iced tea enema. Yes, exactly, cold sweet tea in an enema radically and immediately dropped the body core temperature, the tannic acid helped restore electrolyte balance, and the sugar helped bring up crashing blood sugar levels.
