We're off to see the Wizard, again?

I heard last night while driving taxi that there is a remake of 'Wizard of Oz'. I thought, this is a freaking joke, no one does a remake of this or any classic such as: Citizen Kane.

I have read the link and other sources and appears this may be quite a bit different from original, but, no matter, this is sacred territory and as far as am concerned, is wrong.

Oh well.

Remakes of old movies are rarely as good as the original ones.

Just take "The thing" from 1982 and compare it to the new one that came out a few years back. Too much CGI and pretty much just lacks everything that made the original good.

I remember watching "The A team" as a kid and they were fun for their time, when I watch the new movie they made I was just like; WTF is this shit?

They were also talking about a remake of scarface a few years back, where the story line would be something about Tonys son who would follow his dad's footsteps.

I have however not seen or heard anything about this since, so I don't think they actually made it or are going to.

I hope not

I think the 1951 version had a very young Steve McQueen in it if I remember right. It was shown in 'flea-pits' around London when I was a kid, along with others of that genre. We only went there to screw in the back seats of the balcony, so I don't remember too much of the movie.

No, i don't handle horror too well, lol. i barely made it through the short story.

The problem with remakes isn't that they're remakes. The Ben Hur film with Charlton Heston was a remake of a remake and it got 11 academy awards (though the 1925 silent version has its charm too). The problem is that when studios do remakes they need to have an idea for something new to say or some new way to tell the story and too often they aren't doing that and they're just trying to make a quick buck off an established property.

LOL

I am just surfing around on the IMDb app on my phone, apparently scarface form 1983 is a remake of a movie from 1932.

I guess we learn something new everyday.

Yeah exactly, that always ruins it completely.

Yeah, it was pretty awful. The 1982 version is a lot closer to the source material than the 1950s version.

Remakes are seldom cool and 99% of the time disasters in that they insult those
who know real quality.

Tom Cruise in the Blob remake is a big example, a horrible redo.
the 1980's redo of Ben Hur was way off key even from the novel.

The only exception may be Les Miserables. Both the early 1950's
version and then later the 1980's remake both had their heart in
telling the story as told in the novel, which in this case was a
nightmare thinking how massive and great the novel is.

I'm almost positive this is incorrect since Scarface(1983) was the story of a Maurielito who came to Miami, when Castro decided to clean his sewers back in 1979-80.

I'd be willing to bet that the 1936 version was about Al Capone (whose nickname was "Scarface").

Every once in a while, various remakes have a charm of their own. i.e. movie versions of "I am Legend" by Richard Matheson (1954)

Vincent Price did it as "The Last Man on Earth" in 1964
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058700/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_96

Charlton Heston did a bang up job with the story in "The Omega Man" in 1971.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067525/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_68

Then Will Smith got the part for "I Am Legend" in 2007.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0480249/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

I like Will Smith as an actor but the 2007 remake really was a good example of "if you have enough explosions you don't have to actually tell a story"

"The Three Musketeers" is another story that has been done over and over. One of the most memorable things about the various remakes is who plays Richelieu... from Vincent Price in the 1948 movie (and the 1960 made for TV version) to Charlton Heston in the 1975 version to Tim Curry in one of the latest versions. My favorite is still the 1975 version with Michael York and Raquel Welch.
