Let's make this as simple as possible for you.

Do you belive that "decimate" only and solely means "to reduce by one tenth"?

What part of my posts are you not understanding?

Let me make this as simple as possible for you:

1) you are being a dick.
2) I posted the definition with both meanings.
3) you are just jumping about with your fingers in your ears screaming "No! Mine! I'm right! Tommy is bad! Me!"
4) you don't want to hear 1-3.
5) you aren't typically a dick, so something's going on with you. Go deal with it. It happens.
6) you clearly aren't going to listen to me either, so here: http://www.uhv.edu/StudentSuccessCenter/study/pdf/dictionary.entries.pdf
7) go play the circle game with someone interested.

Oh so rather than answer my question you want to play the circle game?

Fair enough.

But since I know you will read this...

I know you know the answer to that question, because you're a very very literate individual.

I also know, given what a stickler for meaning you are that when someone like you parses...

"The primary, most correct sense of the word is one thing, the secondary - often cited as archaic, and increasingly omitted altogether, meaning is as he described. "

You know that when I say that option a) is the "most correct sense" , I am not actually saying that b) is "Incorrect".

Don't get me wrong... I do think that the second definition is only for pedants, and I (and many dictionaries) certainly prefer the first. But no... if I ask you to show me where I said something was incorrect, it really behooves you somewhat to actually show me where I said something was incorrect.

So when you attempt to use this as an example of me saying that I believe the first definition is correct in modern English usage, well - you know what goes though my head, doncha.

Sigh.

I've answered the question. Twice now. I posted both entries, and explained. Read the thread.

I'm going to go play with grownups now. Please be careful not to put your eye out.

Many thanks for posting this link. Lovely stuff, a little bit undergrad though.

I did read, with some interest, this note on numbering...

"Note that the definitions tend to be ordered according to their use or prevalence. Thus, in this case, the
number indicates an allotment is the most common use of the word quota. To demonstrate a definition,
some dictionaries include phrases or sentences with the word after a specific definition. After its noun
definition of additive, Dictionary.com includes the following: an additive that thins paint. "

Oooh... so it would seem that, assuming the dictionary you quoted follows the same principle - And I'm pretty sure that most dictionaries do, then the more prevalent meaning is the first one.

Hmm... <adopts chin pose to ponder>

Since I've already told you that, again, you're just determined to be a dick.

Nothing I say will change that.

<== snipped my post for brevity - see above ==>
I will use your own words to describe your post

pompous pedantry

Now move along your dirty ass is stinking the place up.

Hey, if it helps you to call me names, you're welcome to, really!

Where have I called you names. Is english not your mother tongue? Do you really need a fucking translator?

So, you blaze away, and call me any names you like if it makes you feel more manly.

Well since you insist. You really are a fucking moron.

Remember of course, that once your hour of editing is up, your posts stay here for all to see. Other people can draw their own conclusions about which of us is the pedant.

Along with more than 10,000 other examples of how I spank the asses of ignorant morons like you.

Do remember though, that you're the one who said..
quote:

It would not be beyond the capability of a fifth grader to recognize that dcimate means to reduce by a tenth while vanquish implies total reduction.

We all recognize that your post contain only puerile ignorance whose only purpose is to increase your post count.

For example :

See... http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/british/decimate?q=decimate

decimate
verb [T usually passive] /ˈdes.ɪ.meɪt/
› to kill a large number of something, or to reduce something severely :
Populations of endangered animals have been decimated.
(Definition of decimate verb from the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus © Cambridge University Press)

Also...
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/american-english/decimate

decimate
verb [T] /ˈdes·əˌmeɪt/
› to destroy large numbers of people , animals , or other creatures , or to harm something severely :
Overfishing has decimated the cod population .
We decimated public transportation in the 1950s and ’60s.
(Definition of decimate verb from the Cambridge Academic Content Dictionary © Cambridge University Press)
Focus on the pronunciation of decimate

Many others take the same line.

Now it's ok. If in the face of such evidence you're still convinced that your definition is correct, we (and pretty much the rest of the literate population of the fucking planet!) will have to agree to differ.

Actually you are the only punkassmotherfucker who is disagreeing with me. So unless you have a turd in your pocket there is no we just a fucking moron named you.

And yeah... seriously, call me any kind of name you like if it helps you with your self esteem.

I don't mind a bit.

Kewel you fucking moron.
Your dictionary definitions support my statement that 10% is to decimate. What your fucking ignorant ass does not seem to grasp is that taking a 10% loss is huge. Perhaps you could go look up the cost of say berksher hathaway and then compute a !0% loss or gain. When the unemployment rate goes over 10% it is most usually noticed. Inflation over 10% makes daily headlines.
For some reason your midget intellect does not recognize 10% as being a significant number.
Show us, if you will ,anywhere anytime in the history of the world that a military commander consistantly lost 10% of his troops that was successful.
So now it is time to take your own advice.
