Oh, and then there's the voting record on the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/resources/pdf/OriginalHouseVoteCR1964.pdf.

VOTING RECORD:

House Democrats: 61% Yea – 39% Nay
House Republicans: 80% Yea – 20% Nay
Senate Democrats: 66% Yea – 34% Nay
Senate Republicans: 82% Yea -18% Nay

20% higher support among Republicans than Democrats in BOTH houses of Congress.

So, can we finally shut the fuck up with the "Republicans were for slavery" lies?

Fortunately, when leftists attack conservatives, it is never a projection of their own flaws, but simply an illustration of the leftists's self-evident superiority. It must be so wonderful to be right all the time. Hugo Chavez looks up from his grave (because surely he would be in hell if such a place existed) and says "Maduro, Maduro, why hast thou forsaken me!? for Hugo was also another one who was universally correct. Just ask Sean Penn.

Here is a perfect illustration of who is actually ignorant in this discussion. Liberals do not assume that we are infallible we do not assume that we're always right, we recognize the mistakes of the past and learn from them. You do realize the philosophy that conservatives espouse today was the liberalism of yesteryear? Neo-conservatism is was once neo-liberalism. Adam Smith was a liberal of his age as were all of the Founding Fathers you conservatives love so much.

Liberalism is a living breathing philosophy that is looking for new and better answers that learns from it's past mistakes and attempts to improve on it. Meanwhile conservatism is stuck dusting off ideas we've abandoned in the dust bin of history.

Liberals self evident superiority? What a laugh. Shows how ignorant you are of liberalism. One of the reasons why conservatism remains a viable political movement is that the left is so full of self doubt and spends so much time hemming hawing and hand wringing that it can't field a sustained and concentrated attack. Rallying the left is very much an act of herding cats. Meanwhile conservatives who talk such a big game about individualism fall in line at the drop of a dime.

The funniest things is that you probably have no idea how well you've illustrated my point. by projecting your own assumed superiority upon me and the left in general.

Remember a core premise of liberalism is that we don't know everything, that there is more to learn thus it is the default position that what we think today could very easily be wrong (or at least not completely right). We accept that uncertainty and strive to improve things. Which I think is honestly the core of conservative thought, I think conservatives fear uncertainty, in fact it's my firm belief that the core of conservative thought is Fear, fear of the other, fear of the unknown fear of change and most importantly fear of uncertainty.

That's why conservatives are so easily bamboozled by those hucksters and snake oil salesmen I mentioned in my previous reply. As long as someone says something with conviction conservatives eat it up. I also think that's why they tend to dismiss and disregard science while embracing religion. Science offers no certainty, scientists always qualify their answers with "we think" "we believe" "probably" while religion offers certainty, you'll not hear a preacher using qualifiers in their sermons.

Amazingly however, despite our lack of certainty we still manage to be right far more often than you are.

I didn't say Republican's I said conservatives. The two term were not always synonymous.

Well, Skex, I'll welcome you to our little basement corner of the internet, and suggest that maybe telling us conservatives what we think, and what our positions are might not be the way you want to get started.

The classical liberalism you describe as "believing we can make the world a better place," ain't the property of the left.

As a conservative, I certainly believe we can make the world a better place. I also believe that government programs are the tool of last resort, not the default answer to every fucking little thing that comes along.

If you'll be bringing interesting thoughts (or a great sense of humor) to the conversation, I'll be looking forward to what you have to say.

Oh, he's already brought his sense of humor to the discussion and I quote Skex: "I've found conservatives to be scared petty hateful people who assume that because they're awful human beings everyone else must be as well."

I mean, if you don't see the humor in that, you must be ... a scared, petty, hateful conservative who is an awful human being to boot.

Thank God Skex is a fearless, broad-minded, loving person who is a wonderful human being. We are fortunate to share the Earth with him in this time.

1.) The majority of Republicans are conservatives.

2.) The Congressional Record doesn't keep track of liberal vs conservative. I'm going with the available facts, not wishful thinking.

You are conflating classical liberalism (still called liberalism on the Continent) with leftism. I, incidentally, am an atheist. My interests include cosmology, quantum gravity, and molecular genetics. I am also familiar with logical positivism and Popper's falsifiability criterion -- among other things. The problem is that your premises about "conservatives" are ones you are treating as universals when they are anything but; and then you assert that liberals (but actually the people you're referring to are leftists) follow Popper when all they really typical follow is power-lusting and control over others making their epistemology rooted in subjectivism and post-modernist thought were nothing is true unless one wants it to be and everything is true at the moment if it happens to serve one's interior purpose.

In order to have a discussion with a modern-day liberal, one would need to accept the premise that the liberal:

1.) Knows everything.
2.) Has absolutely no moral or character flaws whatsoever.
3.) Has the divine right to adjudicate any philosophical or political position as "right" or "wrong".
4.) Is allowed to assign any faults, real or perceived, to any person, group, or concept, without the possibility of being challenged on it.

Once you accept these facts, the discussion gets a lot smoother.

Yeah, I know. I was taught actual critical thinking and logic in school, and I just can't get along with the "Johnny-Feel-Good" products of the American educational system. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

Wait. You have just described Obama: omniscient, amelioristic, and omnipotent. But you did leave out ubiquitous. I guess that makes him 2/3 or 3/4 of a God, depending on how you weigh the different elements and the importance of meliorism. Even that is a step down for The One.

Critical thinking and logic -- those have been banned by the NEA as well as the MLA, I believe.

I simply lack patience for the hateful blather that conservatives are constantly bleating.

I'll note that this thread isn't titled "the ignorance of conservatives". I find it incredibly amazing how thin skinned many conservatives tend to be. You are perfectly happy to say all manner of hateful things about other people but the minute you get a taste of your own medicine you get all indignant and play the victim.

It used to be that one needed a belief in the competence of government. Today, all one needs is a belief that government will take more from the producers to feed the parasites. That entitlement mentality, not just entitlement for others, but entitlement for oneself is far too prevalent for me not to be concerned.

That's self-contradictory. It is especially the most entitled who want they damn check on time, Subrosadom.

I'll rephrase. Old-style liberals said they wanted more money to help the poor. Today, while they say that, a large portion of the voting public is themselves on the dole. So they want it not for anyone else on apparently altruistic premises, but purely 100% for themselves. It's rent-seeking.

When speaking of "liberalism" in historical-perspective terms, one needs to keep in mind that what Locke formulated as liberalism, and what modern liberals believe, are not only "different", but at this point, diametrically opposite.

No, the thread title isn't "the ignorance of conservatives." I started the thread, so I can be certain. Have you figured out where the other users signature lines are? Look down, and read mine. It seems you have limited experience with actual conservatives, or maybe just daddy issues and are projecting. Here you are, in a space with some learning opportunities and a chance to broaden your horizons. Make something of it.

Or not. In which case, do remember that this place is full of sadists, and some of us really like to laugh when we engage, and love to fight before we fuck.

Yes. Precisely. Which is why I won't dignify modern "liberals" with that sobriquet unless they at least respect some of the principles of historical, Lockean liberalism. Which is why I use the term "leftist" freely. If the glove don't fit, you must ... ah, well y'all get the point without my needing a non sequitur to make it.

Accusing conservatives of favoring slavery is just discussing things, refuting it is hateful.

Oh yeah, forgot to include that one.

When a liberal disagrees with a viewpoint, he's "having a dialogue".
When a conservative disagrees with a viewpoint, he's "bleating hateful blather".
