Ok, here goes, guess the only reason it's irking me is because my brother is involved in some aspects, Today my brother started the police academy to become a cop in NY. what do you all think of this?
let me also just say that when you start as a cop you are more then likely getting weekend,s getting nights its pretty much a given you can forget getting Holidays off. Eeven Christmas or Easter (if thats what your religion honors) So what I dont get is why this man will not have to work on saturdays............why he can leave his curls (girls are required to wear hair up, he isnt) Anyway I am just curious to see others reactions, my husband feels that the Post has it comming to them for the headline, but we shall see.

I was under the impression that anyone could request Sundays off due to religious reasons... perhaps I am mistaken.. but I specifically remember the law changed when I worked at a resort that let many people off to go to church on sundays, and because I wasn't a christian I didn't get it off and had to work even though I had a 7 year old at the time I would have liked to have one weekend day off with...

You maybe right Julia, but i doubt it with the police dept, i do think they will give you hell attempting to take a certain day off but then again anyone can claim to be religious to get their Holiday off. I really have mixed feelings about it i guess and was just curious what others thought.

Hi,

I think the difference might be that the guy in the article is an auxiliary officer.  Is your brother going to be a full fledged police officer?  The auxiliary officers might be treated differently.  Just my thoughts, i am not sure if it makes a difference.

"Auxiliary officers, who do not carry weapons, are "eyes and ears" for the department, Witriol said. "They do patrolling, they go to parades"

I suppose he's allowed to keep his hair the way it is, and allowed to have Saturdays off because he's adamant about his beliefs and the right to express them.  In other words, he's unwilling to compromise.  I've noticed people from many faiths who are willing to compromise their religious practices in order to satisfy their work schedule.  I would assume that if any of these people, regardless of creed, would come forth with the same adamancy, they would be allowed their holy days off as well.

He was an auxiliary officer now he is becomming a NYC police officer and so is my brother. My brother could careless about the weekends and Holidays he just wants to make it thru the academy right now hes a nervous wreck.

That is very true. It is causing a pretty big uproar so it should be interesting to see how it all turns out anyway.

The article implies other religious folks have gotten similar exemptions.

"Department sources note that the NYPD has granted a number of religious exemptions to its rules in recent years.

When Witriol graduates from the academy, it is believed that he will be only the third Hasidic officer in the United States."

New York also has fairly strict (or liberal depending on view) laws protecting the religious rights of employees. Wiccans, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and many others enjoy these protections whether they work for pizza delivery or the police department.

Hey , my sister in law is  a cop she graduated the acadamy this past december she is in the NYPD  and her hours are 12-4am, she was lucky she made it in just in time to excape the pay cut that your brother will unfortunetly have to deal with, but dont worrie he will be fine, she loved the acadomy though it was hard work. They need police in NY so Im sure he will do fine
