Why do people dive head first into water? Surely it's safer and better in all ways to jump in?

Well first, there's a question that must necessarily precede that one. Namely, what is your basis for claiming it "surely" is "better in all ways" to jump in?

I'm a dive in person, not a jump in person. In a lake or river I'm unfamiliar with, I don't dive or jump, I'll walk until I familiarize myself with it, know the depth and what obstacles are hiding underneath.

For actual swimming, diving is smoother, you can get more distance and more speed, the dive can be as shallow or deep as you want and you can continue moving in the direction you want to go in with one a continuous motion. Jumping in you just go straight down. If you're going for a swim, you have to get your body in position to swim after the jump where diving you're already in position. I swim across the lake, I dive off the dock, continue moving forward under water until I need air then swim across the lake without any stopping or having to align my body.

If you're going in the water just for fun, I'll say it's a matter of what the person enjoys more.

I guess it would depend on why you are getting in the water to begin with. If your goal is to reach the other side as fast as possible, then diving would be the best way. If your goal is to save someone who is drowning and you don't want to lose sight of them, then jumping is the best option.

Legs bend and are made for taking impact on them; you'll survive with broken legs but not with a broken head ... ?

I don't do much of any kind of diving, personally. Or swimming, for that matter. This is one of those questions that's puzzled me ever since I went to my first swimming pool as a kiddywinky.

It's important to know what you're diving or jumping into. Both can be dangerous if someone is being foolish. A pool is simple, you can clearly see to the bottom, lake or river you need to take extra precautions. Diving or jumping off a boat in the ocean has it's own dangers.......JAWS! :)

If diving wasn't a better way to go into the water then we'd be watching "high jump" competitions instead of "high dive".

I don't know about other people, but it's so I don't get water up my nose. And only in a pool where I can see where I'm heading. In other bodies of water, I walk in first. Usually, it's because it's too cold, and I'd rather not stress the old ticker when I'm in the back pocket of beyond.

That's one thing I never could do....and the reason I never dive in.....if I ever tried to dive in I get more water up my nose than if I jumped in. Well....ok....I hold my nose while jumping in....

I just love the sensation of diving in. I've gotten much more cautious as I've aged. When I was growing up the shallow end of my hometown pool was 2.5 feet deep. I loved diving in (and no, we weren't supposed to!). The town no longer has a swimming pool. Or practically anything else.

I blame Tom Daley for this diving madness. They could definitely make that sport more interesting if they added a few crocodiles.
