I'm a dive in person, not a jump in person. In a lake or river I'm unfamiliar with, I don't dive or jump, I'll walk until I familiarize myself with it, know the depth and what obstacles are hiding underneath. For actual swimming, diving is smoother, you can get more distance and more speed, the dive can be as shallow or deep as you want and you can continue moving in the direction you want to go in with one a continuous motion. Jumping in you just go straight down. If you're going for a swim, you have to get your body in position to swim after the jump where diving you're already in position. I swim across the lake, I dive off the dock, continue moving forward under water until I need air then swim across the lake without any stopping or having to align my body. If you're going in the water just for fun, I'll say it's a matter of what the person enjoys more.
