TNDommeK -> August roll call (8/1/2014 1:25:44 AM)

Everything's great here. We just celebrated hubby's bday. He got some cool stuff. His mom and sister came up to visit. That was awesome. We are headed to memphis for a bad ass concert at the raceway this coming week. (Lots of bands)
That's about it so far...

How are you?

LafayetteLady -> RE: August roll call (8/1/2014 8:40:40 AM)

Appointment with the surgeon today about have my thyroid removed.

Blood sugar is coming down nicel and I'm looking forward to my next A1c.

Oh, and can everyone send prayers, lights, energy (whatever you do) for a dear friend with cancer.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: August roll call (8/1/2014 10:21:27 AM)

LL, done. Sending my very best healing wishes for your friend. It seems so many people are facing the cancer challenge. Every time I turn around it's someone I know. 2 in the last week. [sm=confused.gif]

The long-timers here may remember that I lost my band last fall due to cancer of a mate, with her husband also dropping out to care for her. I was devastated, and have been grieving the last six months in no-band hell. My bands become my families and main focus, so I was lost and heartbroken.

A few weeks ago I did a yoga class that focused on heart-opening asanas. While in the posture, I gradually felt something lift inside and depart, leaving a light, open space.

The next day, I felt compelled to research Scotland. Suddenly it was vitally important to google the Hebrides Islands and examine every tiny little wave on the beach. I took a virtual boat ride around an ancient castle. I imagined yanking the kilt off one of those silver-tongued brogue-whispering bodice-ripping dudes and having my dastardly dommely way with him. I was drawn to that place like bees to nectar.

The day after that, something directed me to read the CL musician board for my area, which I rarely do. A 2-month old ad was up seeking a fiddler for a Scottish/Irish/Celtic band. I wrote. They replied, wanting to meet. When I found out who they were, my jaw dropped to the floor that they would even consider me; this is a well-known, highly sought-after group of the highest caliber. Turns out I've been casually acquainted with one of them for 20 years through contra dancing.

We rehearsed together several times, and those moments have been the most magical of my life. These four totally fun-loving guys are consummate professionals; their amazing level of musicianship is completely natural. Heck, they don't even use music and a couple of them can't read it anyway. Every time I play with them, I'm dumbfounded at their innate talent and cohesive chemistry. They are multi-instrumentalists, even multi-genre, write for the band and sing. They take care of their own sound, recording and equipment. Best of all, they sound just as authentic on stage or unplugged in a living room as they do in the studio.

They work every weekend (sometimes 3 gigs a day in different parts of our large county!) as well as a one or two 3 hour practices during the week, and it's been the equivalent of a more-than-full-time job for me. They've been together 5 years, and I have a lot of catching up to do, even as they're turning out new tunes every week. Since they don't use music, all I can do to learn the repertoire is record the practices and buckle down to memorizing them. If I'm not in the shower, I have headphones in my ears. I'm coming off a year of double rotator cuff hell so I hope I can physically keep up with touring/performing demands. And I would like my level on both the instruments I play for them to come up with a quickness, though they kindly tell me my playing is 'mighty fine'.

My first gig with them is in 8 days, and I've been practicing with them a mere 2 weeks on 4 CDs worth of material. Trial by fire! I've been floating on this endorphin flood since this whole thing started and I'm delightfully terrified! And they asked if I'm having FUN!!

This is the challenge I've been waiting for. My dream band. All the prior band heartbreaks over the years (some of you may remember them) have lead to this insanely wonderful moment. You know what? Middle age is suddenly awesome!! [sm=yahoo.gif][sm=yahoo.gif][sm=yahoo.gif][sm=yahoo.gif][sm=yahoo.gif]

In other news, S and I are enjoying caring for our thriving garden and look forward to harvest mid-Sept, if not sooner. It should be an exceptionally good one this year.

Darling Huck is battling a problem back, and I'm amazed he is able to work as much as he does. Yet, he still offers to drive 250 miles south to roadie for me!! You just can't keep a good man down, and he's the best man I could ask for.

Hope everyone's summer is full of love and light!

Cursing Walmart for not having any motorized shopping carts (while 2 were going outside into the mist, against the store rules). Ended up spasming in my back because of the walking around. Found a new color of yarn to play with. Getting ready for Anime Overload down in Austin. Reading Game of Thrones. Trying to figure out the 3rd row of this border for my nephews' afghan. Got a haircut today and it looks so much softer...my hair gets so wavy and out of control. The recliner broke and to replace the spring, we have to replace the entire arm mechanism...might just go ahead and get a new chair. Have to see my PCP to renew my thyroid and cholesterol meds. Lizard had to go to the ER last night due to a kidney stone and she would not let me talk to the nurse or doctor (I knew what it was from what she was saying). Got antibiotics, Toradol and Norco. She loves the Norco...

Heh, I stand corrrected. One of the mates just sent me the updated list and there are 77 frickin' tunes on there! So, closer to 8 CDs! [8D]

TNDommeK -> RE: August roll call (8/2/2014 2:51:54 AM)

Omg, I just saw where you created a "role call" already. I'm such a goofball.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: August roll call (8/2/2014 10:06:50 AM)

You did it first, K! I'm the goofball, I didn't check. [&:]

TNDommeK -> RE: August roll call (8/2/2014 12:05:12 PM)

Oh?! Ok cool. Wow...I'm really blond! Hahaha!

You are just hiding the roots in your skull...[:D]

LaTigresse -> RE: August roll call (8/7/2014 6:27:37 PM)

I am doing great!

Lots of outdoor activities enjoying the unusually cool summer here. Last year I neglected my gardens due to the broken wrist. This year I reconfigured my flower beds and planted a big vegetable garden. The flowers are gorgeous and the veggies have surpassed my wildest dreams. I have peas, green beans, sweet corn, beets, cucumbers, and omg three kinds of tomatoes..........onions, two kinds of hot peppers, basil, and monster pumpkin vines..........taking over!

And of course, trying to preserve the bounty we cannot eat fresh. The cucumbers were an accident. GD bought a package of 'cantaloupe seeds' which were mismarked cucumber seeds. No cantaloupes but plenty of cucumbers. I am not a fan and neither is he. But he does love a good pickle. I've never tried making pickles as I do not care for them and wouldn't know a good pickle from a bad pickle as they are all bad to me. But apparently I make some kick ass pickles. I've also made a lot of pickled beets, which I do love. They of course lead to pickled eggs......a whole nother experience....[:D]

We are also getting ready to re-side the house and garage. Had a nasty ice storm beat the shit out of the place a month ago. Fortunately just some damage on vinyl siding. We get to do a new home improvement project together! Much cursing, yelling and slamming shit around will commence.

New life goal has been created.........I am sick of Iowa weather. We will be moving south and west in 5+ years.

All critters are doing well. My 4 yo GSD gave me a big (and expensive) scare last month. She's been diagnosed with canine EPI and is now doing great.

Generic Dude has been working hard to convince me to take up golf. I am still holding out.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: August roll call (8/8/2014 8:18:10 PM)

Nice to hear from you, LaT! Too long a radio silence!

Folks, I'm giddy and nervous as hell about the gig tomorrow night. I have lots of friends coming. My sweet, kind band boys made it easier for me by letting me choose the tunes on the second set and sitting in on that one, billing me as their 'special guest'. 'Special needs' may be closer to the truth. [8D] Apparently, they have faith in me. I've told them it's acceptable to laugh as I crash and burn. It'll keep 'em from crying. [&:]

For confidence, I put together a cute outfit with bitchin' new boots, gypsy skirt and a rich chocolate-hued brocade corset (complete with chains on the side, which will be good to attach my fiddle pickup wire to). Long-time friend Ruth (ex-model) is doing my hair and MAKEUP (which I normally don't wear). If there's any chance of looking decent, Ruth'll make it so.

Wish me luck!! If it goes OK, I think I'll finally qualify as 'one of the boys'!

MistressDarkArt -> RE: August roll call (8/10/2014 8:47:16 PM)

Done! Did NOT crash and burn!

We did so well, we got an entire restaurant's worth of people to put down their forks to sing along, and get up to dance in the aisles.

Biggest thrill EVER!

ShaharThorne -> RE: August roll call (8/14/2014 2:58:29 AM)

That's good to hear!

Got the con out of the way, Mom ended up buying a new recliner and I got sunburnt on my face and chest just from walkabout in Austin trying to renew my reduced fare card (allows me to ride half price since I am disabled). There is Ikkicon coming up and Lizard wants to play an elf. Too much Tolkien...left my sleeping pills down there so she will mail them to me on Friday when her BF gets paid. I got a backup supply of Ambien for emergencies such as this. Got the entire series of the Game of Thrones books now but am reading The Witching Hour by Anne Rice.

I'm actually trying to start a new biz. I've discovered there's a market I can tap into. I love to sew and I've discovered there is a big enough percentage of the AB/DL aficionados that wear cloth diapers & not disposables. That means, when they wear cloth they will need plastic pants or, in today's terminology, "diaper covers." So I'm making fabric-covered diaper covers with a moisture-proof material inside, in waist sizes to fit between 20" up to 52". They're really cute actually. It won't make me rich but it will give me some extra spending $$ on the side. I started the new biz at the beginning of August, just to see what happened & I've sold seven pairs already. I make about $15 profit on each pair so, like I say, I'll never make a living at it but it's still all sorts of fun getting to work with the kiddies prints & fabrics.
