Are you amazed at how bad and slow the internet is your area? Do you feel like prices are sky high for service. Do you also feel there's no competition in the market? I live in BALTO and it √√√√ for all of the above.

I just read the following:

•Americans pay four times as much as the French for an Internet triple-play package—phone, cable TV and Internet—at an average of $160 per month versus $38 per month.
•The French get global free calling and worldwide live television. Their Internet is also 10 times faster at downloading information and 20 times faster uploading it.
•America has gone from #1 in Internet speed (when we invented it) to 29th in the world and falling.
•Bulgaria is among the countries with faster Internet service.
•Americans pay 38 times as much as the Japanese for Internet data.

Do you have anything to add to the discussion. Is there any hope for beleaguered Americans?

High speed internet is only $20 a month at my place. There isn't a requirement to have a cable package in my part of town, so you can sign up for just high speed internet. I don't have a PC though. I use Androids, and Androids aren't really fast and high speed internet is a bit more than they're good for. So, I just tether them to my phone when I'm at home. I'm pretty happy, considering what I pay, which is $50 a month for unlimited world wide calling, texts, and internet on my cell phone...

When I'm out an about, I use the varied and sundry free WIFI connections that are virtually everywhere. Libraries, college campuses, restaurants, shopping centers, city buses, hotels, my favorite bar... Anyone who can't find a free WIFI connection for a laptop or Android in Kansas City isn't really trying.

I have "high speed" internet but have only two true places to buy / get it. I live in a major East Coast City. This is another example of sub-standard US infrastructure spending.

Have you seen exactly what you are giving up when you sign-in to these freebie WiFi connections??
Or maybe you don't care that you give away your personal secrets and your location when using them.

The info you give away only recently came to light in a BBC show called 'Click'.
Maybe you should look it up.

Unless you are using a VPN or something like the TOR browser - you are giving away far more than you realize.

There are only a few choices in internet providers here, on the central - west coast of Florida. Brighthouse, Verizon, Knology (now called, WOW). I've used them all. Brighthouse and Verizon continue to be high cost, but I pay $32 per month for medium-speed internet. I live across from a college and public library, so I can pick up the internet free, but prefer to have my own connection.

Phone service, through the internet, is available for $12 per month, through Walmart's Basic Talk service, which is unlimited local and national calling, hooked up through the internet router.

So, it's $44 per month, for internet and phone, here. I don't buy cable because there is so much free streaming available online.

Having said that, the U.S. still leads the world in propaganda for it's citizens. Many still think we are #1. I'd laugh, but it's sad. My understanding is that we are ACTUALLY only #1 in the rate of imprisoning our own.

I've been advised to jump from Comcast to Verizon. I should also explore a cheaper telephone option.

I don't know if the internet service in my area would qualify as "bad," although I suppose it could be better. I've heard that we're lagging behind in a lot of key areas, so I'm not surprised at all by this. At this rate, we'll be back to using manual typewriters and carrier pigeons soon enough.
