LittleGirlHeart -> Our laptop crashed like completely kaput and he got it up again but it keeps crashing. (8/2/2014 5:16:23 PM)

the message under the collecting error information is critical_process_Died

:(

Our virus and malware programs are not showing viruses or anything nasty, the complete kaput was followed by it randomly crashing every so often.

this is exactly the message we see.

Can you clear out of the vents in the case? It may be overheating.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: Our laptop crashed like completely kaput and he got it up again but it keeps crashing. (8/2/2014 8:25:39 PM)

how would one do that? though i don't think it's from overheating as i would think of it, from like lots of use cuz it crashed with in minutes of using it sometimes.

Gauge -> RE: Our laptop crashed like completely kaput and he got it up again but it keeps crashing. (8/2/2014 8:30:07 PM)

Did you recently do any Windows updates?

Did you update any programs or drivers?

If you answered yes to either of those, then you may need to roll back to a system restore point where you knew everything was working. Sometimes updated drivers conflict with resident software and they can cause crashes.

Make certain that you are running the computer in safe mode for your virus and malware scans. Be sure your antivirus and malware software is up to date and running the current detection databases. If the computer is crashing in safe mode then you can be pretty well certain that you have either something wrong with the core operating system or it may be a hardware problem. Try the system restore first.

i described things to geek squad at best buy, and they said it sounds like a hardware problem.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Our laptop crashed like completely kaput and he got it up again but it keeps crashing. (8/3/2014 3:24:11 AM)

Geek Squad just want your money.

If you are using the laptop for long periods of time, it will overheat and crash. Get a fan pad to sit it on. That is what I did to Lizard's computer before the screen fell off and she attached the keyboard and mainframe to her monitor (she is hard on her stuff).

Do what Gauge says...run virus and malware in safe mode.

I have to do some updating to Bo's computer when I get there. He never updates anything and I get a free ribeye dinner out of it.

DarkSteven -> RE: Our laptop crashed like completely kaput and he got it up again but it keeps crashing. (8/3/2014 3:51:26 AM)

If you bought software, then you also bought the ability to call their tech support and ask for their assistance.

DS we will try them first.

Try rolling your system back to an earlier time FIRST.

Torrenting pirated software is one of the best ways to compromise a system unless you are incredibly tech savvy.

Geek Squad is a fucking rip off, they will fix your problem but it will cost you plenty. I know people that used to work for them and frankly, it is a waste of time and money. Most things can be done yourself. I didn't outright call them a scam and crooks, but you can figure that out for yourself.

Hardware problems can happen overnight but most of the time they take place gradually and it may take months to notice a problem. OK, let's rule out the hardware for now. The reason you can rule out hardware is most hardware problems, MOST of them, are normally easy to replicate. You do this, this and this and the system crashes, every time. Or, you turn on the computer and it fails to boot into windows and just beeps. That sort of thing is pretty easy to figure out. There are a few programs to monitor internal temperature and overall system load etc that can be downloaded. I am not going to suggest any, but there are a few free ones that will at least tell you if your CPU is getting too hot. As long as your system has the electronics to monitor temperatures, that software will work.

OK, first website to introduce you to is Majorgeeks.com. I have used this site for pretty much everything related to security software to stubborn virus removal and even some pretty cool utility programs and really nice other software options. They are honest about what the software is as far as if it is ad based or shareware or freeware and everything is safe for downloading. Their forums are also damn handy if you have a bastard of a virus or malware problem.

Go get the following programs:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spybot_search_destroy_tools.html

Spybot is a great utility, is simple and easy to run and will get rid of a metric shit ton of potential spyware. It is very useful and is quite adept at detections. It is also very light on system resources. Install it, update it, and then run the detection scan in Safe Mode.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spywareblaster.html

This program is not detection software but it actually can make sure that a good deal of spyware etc. never gets onto your computer through your browser. Very light on system resources, you will likely forget it is even there. Just remember to keep it updated.

A good many people do not realize that there are good, reliable online antivirus scanners that are free to use. A ton of people ask me why, if I already have antivirus software, do I need to scan online. The answer is simple, there is no one antivirus solution that will catch everything. You should only ever install one antivirus program on your machine because if you have multiple ones, they usually don't play well together. So, one installed program and then use online scans which won't normally conflict with what you have installed. Do either the fast scans or the full scans, for the first time I suggest the full scan, but this can take quite some time, so best to set it up overnight while you sleep and with any kind of luck it will be done by the next morning depending on the speed of your machine.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

I am sure there are others out there but I use these two and have never had a problem with either of them.

The last bit of software I will point you to is a great one and will definitely solve your problem if it is malware or virus related. HijackThis takes a ton of work and it is normally not for the typical user but is just fine with guidance from people who know what they are doing. It will also require you to get involved in the MajorGeek forums for assistance. You can trust those people, they are patient but you have to follow their instructions carefully. There are several steps to take before you use this program because most problems can be solved easily before having to get into this kind of work and detail. I will link you to the Majorgeeks forums and they have a post there that will explain what to be certain to do first. Understand this is a "when all else has failed" step and one of the last things to try if the rest hasn't worked.

OK. Last thing to do if everything fails is to reinstall Windows. This wipes everything off the system and makes the PC (software not hardware) like factory new so back up your data. Avoid GeekSquad at all costs. I would look around for a local computer repair shop that has a good reputation and sooner see you take it there because those shops live and die on their reputation, GeekSquad is a success simply because BestBuy makes it so. Plus, if you get a good rapport with your local computer guy, he can help you a lot when it comes to choosing your next computer.

Best of luck!

I have a friend who got arrested by talking about this online. It is illegal. My advice is, if you accidentally downloaded a virus while illegally downloading movies- its best to not tell the customer service person that. And its best not to talk about it on message boards.

I must say that the very first thing I'd do is hoover the fan.

Oh, God. Yeah, if he's been going to those sites with no computer savvy, this is an accident waiting to happen, and impatiently. Gauge is right - use System Restore. And make him keep away from those sites.

MercTech -> RE: Our laptop crashed like completely kaput and he got it up again but it keeps crashing. (8/6/2014 3:47:41 AM)

Worst case scenario is that the hard drive is dying.

If it keeps doing this kind of thing you have two options.

1> Backup data files then do a clean install

2> Back up data files then get a new hard drive and do a clean install.

Yes, it could be malware on your computer. But, it can also be a hardware issue.

How often do you do a disk check and degragmentation on your hard drive?

To summarize:

Possibility #1 - Overheating
Fix: clean out the cooling fan (might require some disassembly to do a good job, but there are repair manuals available online). Check that there is actual airflow coming out of the fan (note that it may not turn on immediately, for power-saving reasons, not until the machine gets warm enough).

Possibility #2 - Virus/Malware.
Fix: on another computer, download one of the "LiveCD" antivirus packages (here's a list: List of Rescue/Repair LiveCDs, and use their antivirus to ensure the system is clean. Many of those will also include disk check & repair utilities.

The advantage of using a LiveCD is that it's completely self-contained, it loads its own operating system (so even if your Windows install is totally trashed, it would still let you get to your files), and since it's on "read-only" optical media, a virus/trojan cannot compromise it.

Possibility #3 - Windows configuration problem.
Fix: use the built-in diagnostic tools to check the different aspects of your Windows installation.

How to get to various diagnostic modes: Microsoft: Windows 8 Advanced Startup Options
What the different diagnostics do: Microsoft: Windows 8 System Recovery Options

Possibility #4 - disk integrity / file system issues
Fix: use the disk checking tools on a LiveCD to confirm that the hard drive is physically working, that the file system is intact, and that there are no bad sectors. While you're at it, if the hard drive has the S.M.A.R.T. system, and most of them do, check the SMART data to see how bad the disk surface is getting. All hard drives fail eventually, SMART tries to find the bad parts & route around them, and you can view the statistics to get an idea of the remaining lifespan of the drive.

Possibility #5 - Hardware errors (memory, videocard, processor, etc, etc)
Fix: if it's under warranty, back up your data (might have to use a LiveCD if Windows doesn't boot at all), delete anything that's sensitive, and send it in for repair. The reason you have to backup is that most likely, the service center will wipe the drive clean, or even replace it.

If it's not under warranty, get some quotes on diagnosing it, and compare to the cost of a new laptop.
