you know, like the ones that advertise if your pc is ever stolen or totally damaged or what ever they got your files safe and sound and can restore them to you. I think i saw one for 60 dollars but if you all know of any cheaper ones, could you let me know.

You can find a great deal of back-up services by simply searching. Use a trustworthy name and realize that you will likely get what you pay for. Backing up data is critical when you do not want to lose things. External drives are the best for this as well as flash drives and DVDs. I have a bank of 4 external drives and I keep a direct image of my main hard drive that I back up every week to an external drive as well as critical data.

Try "online computer backup services" or various combinations thereof.
They typically charge based on how much data you want to store.

I would recommend developing a plan. You don't typically need to store the entire hard drive as you would have to rebuild it from scratch if it failed.
Step 1: Make sure you have whatever restore disk(s) your computer needs. Most new computers do not include them - you make them using a utility provided on the hard drive and your media.
Step 2: Make sure you have whatever programs you use on some sort of media. This would be MS Office if you use that, utility apps like anti-virus, games, photo-shop apps, etc.
Step 3: Determine what files you need to have backed up. Typically this would be photos, documents, spreadsheets, etc. Once you know how much data you need to protect you can then make an informed decision for a service provider.
Step 4: Use whatever you decide on!!! The best data protection/backup plan is worthless if you do not use it on a regular basis.
Step 5: Test you backup system! How do you know your plan works? Try to restore a couple of files. It's just as important to know how to retrieve your data as it is to store it.

That's cheap. Go for it.

Carbonite is about 50 something. So not to bad.

Ok.. it takes forever to backup a whole hard drive to an internet vendor. It takes a ton of bandwidth too.

Now, backing up to a portable hard drive and keeping it somewhere secure is much faster and easier. You just have to backup religiously.

My old buddy that does serious consulting work keeps his off site backup under the seat of his car and another copy in his safe deposit box at the bank.

Since most of my data no so business critical, I keep my backup of the home computer in a fireproof box in my RV. The backup of my laptop is in a safe in the house.

Remember, the online backup services have a monthly charge. A portable hard drive is a one time price.

On another note.. backup software.

Cobian works well, uses a fairly universal compression format instead of proprietary software, and is inexpensive.. as in shareware. It also interfaces with encryption protocols robust enough that it has been used for classified data backup and transport.

At one time, Norton Ghost was the cat's meow for backup. Then, they started changing algorithms so that a backup done with an earlier version was rendered unreadable by a later version.
