I'm seriously considering getting a small tattoo on my hip. I hate needles so am hoping someone can explain what the sensation is like when all those needles are attacking my tender flesh. Also, can anyone recommend a trustworthy professional tattoo artist in the NJ, NY, PA area? If I go through with it I'll post a pic if it. Thanks

Let me be the one to set your mind at ease. I overwhelmed myself. There was nothing to it. I'm a wuss when it comes to pain, prolly why I like dishing it out. But!! It is t that bad. The best way I can describe it is, ya know when you're sunburned and someone touches or scratches your burn? That's how it feels. The best part is the cleaning it. The first three or four days after you get it, that smell of the cleaner they give you (buy it from there or get dial antibacterial soap).....ahhhhhh! Relief! DO NOT SCRATCH!! Rub or pat. Enjoy!

Don't think in terms of needles on what it feels like. It's more like somebody carving at you with a vibrating exacto knife. It isn't agonizing, but it does wear on you. Most artists will be more than happy to show you a portfolio of their work. You could also strike up a conversation with someone who has ink you like, and see where they got it done.

I really hate pain. I've almost fainted almost every time I've gotten blood taken or had to get a shot. But tattoos really don't bother me. The hip isn't that painful of a spot and a small tattoo shouldn't take too long. It's kind of hard to describe the feeling to someone who has never been tattooed but it doesn't feel like needles. Be wary. It's quite addictive. I started with a small one on the back of my neck and I'm now working on a sleeve lol

IME, tats feel more like minor abrasions than needles. Well, except for the "trampstamp" located tat. Fucker asked me if I wanted more shading, I told him he'd lose his balls if he tried. (FTR, I swear to god I felt EVERY.BIT.OF. NEEDLES.IN. EVERY STRIKE. on that one). By the same token, the one I have at the base of my neck felt GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD. I know people whose experience is exactly opposite. Rule of thumb is that the more meat there is, the less it should hurt. Upper arm, upper thigh, butt, breast (on women- as long as it isn't near the nipple) GENERALLY tend to be less painful. YMMV. If you want it on your hip, I would suggest staying away from the hipBONE area. If you're just looking for a place that will be (statistically, anyway) less painful, but fairly easy to show off, I'd go upper arm/shoulder. Easily covered with clothing, easily displayed. And I have yet to meet anyone that said that that spot was excruciatingly ouchie.

MooTattoo in Philly. Or Old City in Philly. I got my first one done on my hip and I HATE needles. I was terrified, the second it hit me though I went "WHAT THATS IT?" Don't psych yourself out, you'll be fine. A doctor's needle is like a totally different sensation than this. I'm a maso and I loved it. I wish I could get tatt'd without having a perm. mark. I intend to get like...5 more tattoo's, when I lose weight. If you have more questions get at me on the otherside- I have a picture of it in my profile if you want to see. But the spot you're getting it shouldn't hurt that much.

No, they don't go around with the visible tats, but both by direct knowledge and by what I have heard, they do, they just don't flaunt it.

I enjoy getting tats and I'll admit, the feeling is a turn on to me. The part I don't like is the healing stage when they itch. As someone else mentioned, don't scratch when they itch, it'll mess them up, slap them instead.

My first tattoo was a 6 hour sitting and it is the beginning of a sleeve. My favorite band of all time is Genesis and I am getting icons from all 15 album covers on my arm. I hope my picture upload works. The sensation is difficult to describe, certainly not painful but definitely not comfortable. Think of it like an electric toothbrush with wire bristles on your skin. Smaller tattoos are better because you have less chance of the area becoming overworked and getting sore. The last hour of my tattoo was not much fun, I sat like a rock because I just didn't think about it much. Aftercare is very important. Listen to your artist for tips. What I did was wash with an unscented anti-bacterial soap and then pat the area dry. Once it was dried off, I used either Aquaphor ointment which I could get in nice travel tubes or if I wasn't out and about I used raw shea butter which you can find on Amazon for about $6 for a pound of the stuff. Keep your tattoo nice and moist only use a very thin layer of the moisturizer. The Aquaphor will absorb into the skin a little bit so you will have to reapply a few times in a day, but the shea butter lasts until you wash it off. Never let the area dry out. To find an artist, look around online and browse portfolios like crazy. Find an artist that you like and then contact them. The big thing is to trust your artist and always remember, this is going on your skin so if it doesn't suit you, don't get it inked. Most artists are willing to work with you on design elements. Most of all, don't be nervous, I kind of took the high dive approach with my tattoo and it was a fun experience which I look forward to having again. Tattoos are addicting... Thanks for the photo, Gauge. Very nice artwork. Naturally, I want to get a spider tattoo. I'll check out the places in Philly that ShiftyW listed.
