I have never read these books, nor will I. I know that some here have read them. I am interested in hearing comments about the article I linked.

I think a lot of statements in there are fucking horseshit. For instance:

quote:

The study, published online Thursday in the Journal of Women’s Health, was inspired by her systematic analysis last year of abuse patterns in the novel, including intimidation, stalking, verbal abuse, and sexual violence. “We found it to be normalizing and glamorizing violence against women,” said Bonomi, who disagrees with the opinion of some that the book simply portrays a BDSM relationship dynamic. “In a BDSM relationship, if there is any alcohol or substance abuse involved [as there is in the book],” she explained, “that essentially negates consent.”

OK, what substance abuse happened? Was there stumble all over the place drinking? Heroin use? Seriously? One drink removes consent?

People will just believe anything.

Oh for fuck sake! It's a series of poorly written FICTION books. It's like the BDSM version of Twilight. Some people take shit way way way too seriously [8|]

Read the books just to see what the hype was all about. I know, I know...please don't stone me in the streets because of it [:)]. Pure fluff set to get the housewives all tingly in their girly bits, but that's about it. Glorifies violence against women? As a woman who is into BDSM, I say "hell yes, Id like that." Let me tell you, my relationship with my guy is one where half the time it's glorified violence against a woman...and the other half glorified violence against a man. Study that shit, Journal of Women's Health [:D]

My guy and I enjoy a drink every now and then. At no time did I ever feel my consent was negated because of it and I'm sure if he was asked, my guy would say the same thing about his consent to me. I say without hesitation that I trust him with my life because I know he'd cut off his own arm before he'd harm me in any way outside of what I consented to. I consented to the drink, I consented to his having a drink, and I consented to his having his way with me. "Who is this chick to dictate the terms and conditions of MY relationship" is what came to my mind when I read the quote.

Why do people want to be victims so damn much?

Everything has to be an attack on X, or a war on X. 50 shades is not an attack on women, it's the manifestation of one woman's sexual fantasy based on another woman's sexual fantasy that happened to create sexual fantasies for a ton of other women (and likely men.)

Because there are bunches and bunches of organizations and benefits available to these poor, widdle, disenfranchised waifs...victims of coercive abusers (men), greed (capitalistic men), racism (white men), or their gender (because of men).

50 Shades of Grey is to literature as Justin Bieber is to music.

50 Shades of Grey is to psychology as Scientology's E-Meter is to Neuroscience.

I never get how media actually influences you to do stuff.

I see lots of fat people enjoying football on TV. Few if any of those people will ever get out of a chair and throw a ball around. I enjoy cooking shows, but will never make a cake.

Ladies who enjoy a bodice ripper or an alpha male crazy lead in a film generally just go about their sex lives in an overwhelmingly ordinary manner.

But's it's always those other sheeple-like masses, right? Never the god-like maker of this dubious influence point.

DesFIP -> RE: 50 Shades of Get The Fuck Out of Here (8/24/2014 8:53:17 PM)

I read the first three pages. What I saw was a barely legal girl with zero relationship experience being pressured to sign a contract that she did not understand. Being taken away from her support system and isolated.

After that, I refused to read any more so no idea about substance abuse.

windchymes -> RE: 50 Shades of Get The Fuck Out of Here (8/24/2014 11:05:45 PM)

I have to laugh when the subject of 50 Shades comes up say at work, and some of the women will giggle and say how awesome the books are. I say nothing, but I think to myself, "If you guys only knew......Have any of you ever heard of Paddles in NYC? There was this one night, in 2005......" [:-]

Amateurs.

kkaliforniaa -> RE: 50 Shades of Get The Fuck Out of Here (8/24/2014 11:25:49 PM)

If it makes a difference, there is supposed to be a fourth installment of Anne Rice's Beauty trilogy *headdesk*

ClassAct2006 -> RE: 50 Shades of Get The Fuck Out of Here (8/30/2014 1:38:56 PM)

I liked the books and good for the writer to make such a success of it. They are about someone dominant with someone who is not submissive however, like a gay man with a woman so they are not really at all about a real Ds relationship.
I thought it was good though to see an accurate description of people who are dom and nice that it was censorious of it as it normally would be. Much of what he wants to do to her is what most submissive women would like.

Not according to my slut. She thinks the guy is an asshole.

Adrah -> RE: 50 Shades of Get The Fuck Out of Here (8/30/2014 8:31:50 PM)

I refuse to read them. From what I've heard Christan Grey throws consent out the window then runs it over with a Mack truck.

Accurate description of Doms? In what world, aside from the author's and yours?

And, I guess I'm not "most submissive women" because I couldn't even trudge my way through the entire thing.

kkaliforniaa -> RE: 50 Shades of Get The Fuck Out of Here (8/30/2014 9:16:02 PM)

Something to consider, if something [book, movie] is mainstream [New York Times best seller list, etc], then chances are it may not be an accurate depiction of a realistic situation, at least not when it comes to BDSM.. How many things are out there that are considered to be BDSM, but aren't? [well not by most standards, I'm guessing]

I can think of four:
50 Shades
The Beauty trilogy by Anne Rice
Sweet Temptation by Maya Banks
9 1/2 Weeks with Kim Bassinger

Moonlightmaddnes -> RE: 50 Shades of Get The Fuck Out of Here (8/30/2014 9:57:55 PM)

Christian is an experienced sadist that likes to find women who look like his dead mother that abused him so he can feel like he is getting a bit of revenge.
Anastasia is a virgin fresh out of college who has never had a serious relationship, but she looks the part so he chases her. He tries to scare her away, but then goes back to chasing her again. He eventually tells her about his lifestyle and shows her his play room. He talks her into signing a contract with him. He gets angry with her if she questions anything he wants to do, and she eventually becomes afraid of making him angry. She hides things from him to keep him from getting mad. If anyone of my friends told me their relationship was like this I would be asking them to consider leaving.
Despite all this she marries him and after they are married she becomes pregnant. He blows up of course. He is furious and accuses her of trying to trap him with a child.
All I could think was holy shit, if my husband treated me this way I would leave.
He does come back and they work things out, and the book ends with her fixing him so he doesn't need to be a sadist anymore.

I did not like it. If you like erotic romance there are so many better authors out there. Cherise Sinclair does a great series. Her first book, Club Shadowlands is free and it is about a woman who wrecks her car in a storm and seeks shelter in a BDSM club. The owner of the club introduces her to the lifestyle, but nothing like 50 shades. Very, very different. There is a facebook memme that cracks me up everytime I read it that says Christian Grey walked into Club Shadowlands and was laughed out of the place by real Doms.
Lexi Blake has a Masters and Mercenaries series. It has a lot of suspense mixed into her stories. They are centered around men who are ex special forces who work in a security agency.
Kallypso Masters has a series of books out called Masters at Arms. The first couple of books are free. She writes a great story and she researches BDSM very well.
They are all fiction and a fun read, but the difference is that none of them make me annoyed by inaccurate research.

What part makes it an accurate description of a dom and what is it that most submissive women would like?

Soooooo

you thought it was an accurate description of what a dominant is?

I feel sorry for you, if you truly think that.

THE books are pieces of shit

First some SERIOUS thinking is in order .... [sm=chug.gif] and a little more .... [sm=chug.gif] ... well, I guess I should of said, has been ordered! [;)]

Knowing a bit about 50 Shades of Gray, is sometimes an asset in picking up attractive, otherwise vanilla women.

Typically though, the readers are the same ones who once read harlequin romances ... so no doubt the whatever in the study, show the similar behavior.

The readers of harlequin romances are typically female and love the "romance"

Yet, 50 Shades could be a great vehicle to meet some girls ... who have a bit of a pre-disposition to becoming submissive ... and if You do, than You could train them to the real D/s thing ... likely, they would find it hugely romantic! [:D]

Just my [sm=2cents.gif]

and waitress ... I will have another one! Yum! [;)]

Oh BTW waitress, do you know where I could meet the Mistress who trained christian? [:D] [:D] [:D]
