While such a conversation is an interesting topic. Lets not forget....WHO...is stating such things. The ones that defend firearms like a religious cause. The ones that believe the 2nd amendment is a religious code and therefore can not be changed, altered, or misread by anyone (except for them, whom conveniently ignore the first half and reinterpret the remainder). For them, the numbers they speak on could be ten times the values, and they....STILL...wouldn't give a shit.
That there are more deaths due to automobiles then firearms, is used like a defense. When reality is shed on the 'religious belief', it faulters.
How many hours of operation are cars used during the business week? How many hours of continuous firing of firearms takes place during that same time?
Which is more a complex set of moving parts? A standard automobile or an assault rifle? Which is easier to maintain? So mechanical failure leading to deaths with automobiles is naturally more likely.
How in-depth have the studies been performed on the usage, cause of accident, and length of operation, not to mention the environment one typically finds both an automobile and firearm? For automobiles, pretty damn deep; for firearms...not at all. The ones that bring up 'pointless deaths' in their threads are hellishly against any real, in-depth studies looking into and testing the firearm myths that exist. They, demand everyone except their myths without question.....or else! Is that really the viewpoint of a studied, educated, and sane person? Or some religious nut, scared to death that his or her viewers are mostly false and easily disproven with scientific data?
An example of a pointless death?
Sending our troops to Iraq to remove weapons of mass destruction from an evil dictator whom would use them on the United States of America. Only problem? The WMD collection was practically 'nil' compared to the 'massive stockpiles' we were all told. How many of our soldiers had to die to find that information out? Which political party kept the evidence hidden? And which supports keeping careful, through, and in-depth research from firearms, like they do with automobiles? The same political party: The Republican/Tea Party!
