Yep, good grammar and spelling are two examples of intelligence and a good education, but of course they're not the only ones. They're also off the table if the writer doesn't have English as a first language.
I don't understand the confusion between you're/you, affect/effect, and its/it's, so I lower my expectations for those who get them wrong.
But I do start sentences with conjunctions ;-), and I do use colloquialisms for effect. I'm not perfect, especially when typing quickly, and I generally am thankful for corrections.

On the flip-side, I just had a sexist colleague rage at me for changing his correspondence when he got 'criteria/criterion' wrong. Control freaks and trolls hate being wrong as much as they hate apologising or saying thank you!

Winston Churchill said about rule 2: "This is a rule up with which we shall not put".

Indeed. And Churchill was right. There is nothing wrong with starting sentences with conjunctions or ending them in prepositions. Neither has any meaningful basis. Fowler will tell you the same thing. There are really grammatical rules and then there are fake ones perpetrated upon those who believe some obscure "authority."

DesFIP -> RE: Grammatical Pedantry! (9/8/2014 6:20:07 PM)

I'm not sure how this came about but the other day The Man was upset about people requiring correct punctuation. So I told him about the panda that went into a restaurant, ate its meal then pulled out a gun and shot the proprietor. And how a simple comma made the difference. Apparently he'd never heard of Eats, Shoots and Leaves.

He just shook his head.

Now, with that said my mother in law, retired for many years now, used to run one of the nation's largest Morgan breeding farms. She had a clear understanding of the blood lines but she is dyslexic so her silent partner kept the books. But years after, when my daughter started showing horses people still recognized our last name and would ask her if she was related. She was still highly respected for her abilities. No one ever refused to send a mare to her or trust her judgment with animals worth tens of thousands of dollars simply because of an inability to write well.

As someone who works in HR....they may interview well, but if they are told to submit a writing sample at the interview, as my employer does with many higher level positions, that person is still screwed.

When my other half, a dyslexic an aspie graduated with honours in both engineering science and physics he wasn't asked for a writing sample by his future employer . Neither was he asked for a writing sample when he was approached by a well known physics magazine and asked to write a regular column.

I will warn him about not applying for a higher level positions. I really don't want to knock his confidence at this stage in his career. [8|]

Good idea! How did he graduate with honors if his writing is significantly affected by dyslexia? I'm assuming he either had someone write things for him or had a backup proofreader? Having that extra person helping you out like that would make it much easier to graduate with honors. Most people aren't lucky enough to have that kind of help.

Hey, bitch! How dare you post info from my alter ego... Um, I mean... Yikes. What a total fake profile... Yep.

How condescending and belittling you are!

Universities have a fairly high proportion of both 'dyslexic' and 'high functioning 'aspies'. There are presently around 800 dyslexic students at Oxford university (a very difficult university to get into).

Bright individuals often develop strategies which help them to cope with the reading, spelling and grammar; though not all dyslexics will have all of those problems. Yes they do need extra help but not the sort of extra help you are suggesting. Its not the sort of extra help that would assist someone who wasn’t dyslexic. Dyslexics and high functioning ‘Aspies’ tend to be very innovative thinkers. They are good at problem solving, they have to be because they have to process information differently than others.

A dyslexic is right brain dominated; a none dyslexic is usually left brain dominated. A right brainer has a tendency to be better at working with facts, having a better grasp of verbal language, logical reasoning and the ability to break things down. They will often have more of a flare for mathematics than left brained people. There IQ can be just as low or just as high as a left brainer. They are not mentally handicapped or retarded, as you seem to be suggesting; They are just a different cognitive style that comes with numerous advantages and disadvantages.

Actually, language predominantly involves the left temporal lobe, and it's so-called "left-brained" people who are said to be more logical and analytical. But more to the point, the whole notion of people being "left-brained" or "right-brained" is a myth.

There Is No Left Brain/Right Brain Divide
Scientists have long known that the popular left brain/right brain story doesn’t hold water.

Researchers debunk myth of 'right-brained' and 'left-brained' personality traits
there is no evidence within brain imaging that indicates some people are right-brained or left-brained.

As someone who has spent a good proportion of a career applying for (and getting ;) ) those 'higher level positions' I've found that a position that pays a few multiples of the average wage has infinitely less paperwork to get through.

Someone working for minimum wage will generally need to fill in a lot more forms, writing samples and other crap than someone who is applying for senior management jobs which are much more likely to be offered on the back of a CV and a handshake

Your employer may do that, but they are certainly in the minority to do so.

ETA I do wish I could bloody type!
