ORIGINAL: ExiledTyrant I have an elderly neighbor that was bitten by a viper about two weeks ago, I've been taking care of her since. My house is in The city limits, but I have acreage a stone throw from my house that is in the county. Spring and summer I go cull the herd of vipers to keep them in check. I'm not capable of shooting all of them, but I shoot enough of them to keep them from my house in search of food. In the county I can be trigger happy red neck god of murder and mayhem and the authorities will come help... It's like drowning lawyers, no matter how many you drown, you just can't feel bad. However, in the city, it is illegal to discharge a firearm. Had my neighbor lived I the county, she would not have been bitten. She was young enough to recover from it, and old enough to survive it. Her adjacent neighbor has small children that would not recover from a bite. Jus sayin In all seriousness, that is probably the first gun argument I've read that I've actually been able to see the logic behind. That isn't someone just shouting 'I want a gun, because... because... errmm... they're loud and I can kill people! No! that's not what I mean, I want a gun because its my right goddamit. Which from over here in tea drinking blighty, is exactly what 99.99(9999)% of american pro-gun arguments appear to be saying. As I said when I stumbled into this thread, I just find it really peculiar. I'm not trying to make an argument one way or the other, I'm merely expressing my thoughts from a few thousand miles of abstraction. It's all good. I've always lived in the country and that comes with it's own particular hazards that most gun pro or anti never experience. People that perpetrate gun violence/related crimes, tend to stay out of the country. Smart predators choose easy prey, and when you go to the country looking for badness you're usually out gunned. It's not because country folks are gun nuts, we utilize guns to secure our well being. Vipers are often the least of our worries. Coyotes will wipe out your livelihood in just a few nights. Big cats will snatch a kid, bears will fuck you up, and rabies can reach epidemic proportions. So a gang banger with a glock is not a very viable threat in the country. Should one come to the country to raise hell, it's not the person they are confronting that is the threat, it's the dozen armed neighbors that can and will snatch the life out of them.
