As an English guy, the whole American fascination with guns is peculiar to say the least, whatever gets you off in the morning and all that. (though your fascination with actually killing people with those guns is more troubling)

However, my point here is that the idea of using the tragic death of two people as leverage in an argument is just shameful to me. I genuinely don't see how there is any justification for that.

It's just the way Bama is.
He has to post these ridiculous non-gun things to make up for all the gun deaths that happen over there.
He has to somehow try and prove that guns are good.

In many parts of America we have fauna that can and will kill you. Some will kill you to eat you and some do it just to be an asshole. Usually, anti-gun people don't live near such fauna and pro-gun people do.

And you have to somehow prove that they are evil and the US would be so much better if they just listened to those uber intelligent folks across the pond and outlawed all of them. It's interesting that you are so concerned with those of us who are killed buy guns but have no interest if they died in another way. Then they are just "ridiculous non-gun things" so move along, nothing to see here.

No...I'm comparing the actions of a 17 yr old with absolutely no right to own or drive a car to the actions of people who had rights and disregarded them. The result is the same...pointless deaths, no matter the weapon used.

Actually, in some states, it is completely legal for a 16 year old to own a drive a car and quite a few states allow younger (I know one state has a 14 year limit) people to have special "agricultural licenses" to help out on the family farm.

I only point this out because it might have been completely legal (and therefore a right) for a 17 year old to own and drive the vehicle.

Screen captures still RULE! Ya feel me?

Actually, it may well be within his rights to own an automobile. However, a driver's license is a privilege...not a right.

Do you find it equally shameful when someone posts about a gun death to score points for the anti gun side? And while you are thinking about that, maybe you could link a few posts where americans are fascinated by people getting killed.

Actually, I don't consider it any more shameful than those using out of the norm gun fatalities to make their point against guns.

My bigger point is that most , if not all, pointless deaths occur when irresponsible and reckless behavior is in play.

Screen captures still RULE! Ya feel me?

But not to drink and drive.

Absolutely agreed but Creative's quote seemed to say that 17 year olds are automatically precluded from owning or driving a car.

In the commonwealth in which I currently reside, the age is 16 for driving (I'm not sure about ownership but, since they can register the car in their name, that suggests "ownership", as well).

Screen captures still RULE! Ya feel me?

Yes that would imply ownership. I do agree with her primary point that both are examples of people abusing rights, and neither is a reason to attack the rights.
Here since the family farm is private property I don't think they need a license.
Hmmmm Bama? I'm a guy.

Yeah, I really should have known better than to poke around this topic! its only ever going to suck me into a crazy world of WTF arguments.

I shall go back to drinking tea, looking out over English Roses (careful of the thorns!), and contemplating the Magna Carta.

That would depend upon how one interprets the right of free travel, which is a right.

If we can say that muskets were the "assault weapons of their day", can't we also say that driving is just another mode of travel?

I happen to think driving is a right, not a privilege.

I have an elderly neighbor that was bitten by a viper about two weeks ago, I've been taking care of her since. My house is in The city limits, but I have acreage a stone throw from my house that is in the county. Spring and summer I go cull the herd of vipers to keep them in check. I'm not capable of shooting all of them, but I shoot enough of them to keep them from my house in search of food. In the county I can be trigger happy red neck god of murder and mayhem and the authorities will come help... It's like drowning lawyers, no matter how many you drown, you just can't feel bad. However, in the city, it is illegal to discharge a firearm. Had my neighbor lived I the county, she would not have been bitten.

She was young enough to recover from it, and old enough to survive it. Her adjacent neighbor has small children that would not recover from a bite.

Jus sayin

In all seriousness, that is probably the first gun argument I've read that I've actually been able to see the logic behind. That isn't someone just shouting 'I want a gun, because... because... errmm... they're loud and I can kill people! No! that's not what I mean, I want a gun because its my right goddamit.

Which from over here in tea drinking blighty, is exactly what 99.99(9999)% of american pro-gun arguments appear to be saying.

As I said when I stumbled into this thread, I just find it really peculiar.

I'm not trying to make an argument one way or the other, I'm merely expressing my thoughts from a few thousand miles of abstraction.

It's all good. I've always lived in the country and that comes with it's own particular hazards that most gun pro or anti never experience. People that perpetrate gun violence/related crimes, tend to stay out of the country. Smart predators choose easy prey, and when you go to the country looking for badness you're usually out gunned.

It's not because country folks are gun nuts, we utilize guns to secure our well being. Vipers are often the least of our worries. Coyotes will wipe out your livelihood in just a few nights. Big cats will snatch a kid, bears will fuck you up, and rabies can reach epidemic proportions. So a gang banger with a glock is not a very viable threat in the country. Should one come to the country to raise hell, it's not the person they are confronting that is the threat, it's the dozen armed neighbors that can and will snatch the life out of them.

At the bottom of your post you say you are responding to me but you quote someone else's post.
And what you claim our posts are saying just proves that you decided what we would say, and responded to it, without actually paying any attention to what was actually said.

And that means you have a well ordered militia.
Or did you mean the wildlife would eat them before they could get into the house?

I tend to agree with this, although there are some pretty dangerous drivers out there. I think that there should still be ways of protecting public safety from those who are unable to drive or present a danger to themselves or others. But to say that "driving is not a right but a privilege" doesn't set well with me either.

I think it is a privilege because if you drive like a twat, that privilege can be removed.

At least that's how I interpreted that

That does not represent an obsession with killing but rather an obsession with not being killed.
