I think almost all rights have some "controls" or, if you will; punishments for those that use them for nefarious reasons.

Someone convicted of armed robbery can never legally own a handgun (I don't care how liberal the state laws are).

A teacher that abuses children (either physically or sexually) can never get another teaching certificate.

You get the point. I can't help but believe that just because rights can be used to do evil, doesn't mean the rights are to blame, it's the ass munchers that do the evil in the name of those rights.

Surely, every religion has a right to exist and to practice (as our constitution states) but, when a group starts saying "God has told us to cleanse the impure". It's time to do something to curtail those practices.

Similarly (to bring us back on topic), someone (an individual, NOT the whole group) who uses their right to drive for an evil purpose such as this should no longer be allowed to engage in that right (after their prison sentence, of course).

Do you find it equally shameful when someone posts about a gun death to score points for the anti gun side? And while you are thinking about that, maybe you could link a few posts where americans are fascinated by people getting killed.

I suspect I would, but very rarely actually read them, I'm not entirely sure why I got embroiled in this today! (avoiding actual useful work I imagine)

At the bottom of your post you say you are responding to me but you quote someone else's post.
And what you claim our posts are saying just proves that you decided what we would say, and responded to it, without actually paying any attention to what was actually said.

Initially I was responding to you (at least I think it was you, I've not paid a huge amount of attention to be fair) - or whoever the OP was - because I thought it unconscionable to use the tragic death of two teens as leverage in a gun argument.

And I was saying I find the who gun argument peculiar.

So yes, you're right, I've not actually paid that much attention to what was said, mostly because I have a few thousand miles of abstraction between myself and the realities of this argument. I understand neither the intracacies nor the nuances of the arguments So I have very little interest in the actual gun argument.

Mine was simply a matter of decency. I found it crass. Other's didn't.

Maybe I'm just a sensitive soul.

AKinkCounselor -> RE: Another Pointless Automobile Death... (9/11/2014 9:36:43 AM)

I think we have a fundamental difference of opinion of what is a right and what is a privilege then! For me a right is something that cannot have controls, it cannot be hindered, reduced, removed or otherwise recinded.

A right to me, is something akin to -

quote:

ORIGINAL: UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
Article 3.

Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person

I have the right to live, to freedom and to security.

The ability to drive a car, might be a 'right' under the law, but it can be reduced, removed and otherwise recinded. and hence becomes a privilege.

P.S. article 3 seemed a pertinent one to feed the fire with ;) - enjoy.

I would call the "UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS" a really nice base but, we're not yet a globally governed people (and I will take up arms against anyone that tries to make it so). So, in this country, the constitution rules (since it also doesn't violate your chosen rubric).

You mean like "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" ?

I am impressed how astutely you picked up that I wasn't paying attention. That is impressive. I gave no clues to that or anything.

Almost comical? damn! I do keep missing that target.

You admit to not really reading the posts, make a proclamation evaluating virtually ALL pro gunners posts and expect to be taken seriously. Almost comical because to be comical it would have to be funny.

You're making the false assumption that I care whether I'm taken seriously or not! I am entirely aware that there's nothing I can say in this argument that would make the least bit of difference to anyone.

I made a comment about something that bothered me, I didn't make the comment to illicit a reaction or to inveigle a retraction. It bothered me, I commented.

Everything else I have said I have said with the sole purpose of amusing myself, having some fun, and maybe a little narcissistic spitting contest.

I'm having fun, what are you doing?

You see, funny would be the target I keep missing is kind of what I was aiming towards earlier. Maybe might sights need adjusting or something.

Not to get too far off topic in my own thread but the rights we have in this country are granted to us by the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
If you look closely stceither one, there is no such right as a "right to drive". It is a privilege granted by the state you live in. Governed by laws and regulations but NOT an "inalienable" right, as declared by the Declaration, nor found anywhere within the Bill of Rights.

Googling it brings up a bunch of papers but the major argument against it is similar to mine. I haven't googled any court cases over the argument but I will this afternoon.

mnottertail -> RE: Another Pointless Automobile Death... (9/11/2014 11:18:42 AM)

No rights are granted you by the Declaration of Independence. I will leave it as an exercise to the reader.

Hate to disagree but the Constitution itself says it does not grant rights, it recognizes them.
Anything granted is a privilege can be rescinded were as a right can only be interfered with.

You are right. I used the wrong descriptors for what I was saying. Rights ARE recognized. Priviledge IS granted. Hence, the explanation as to why...like it or not...you have no legal "right" to drive.

I thought that was what happened, but as you know we have some people on here (and at least one former President) who actually believe that rights were truly granted by the Constitution.

So, a spitting contest for you too then

Arrogant. Yes.
And very ignorant of US gun controls, I live in a relatively poor city in middle England, I don't recall the last time I had a conversation about guns in the UK. I'm quite happy to accept my ignorance of the topic, and to concede that my comments are facetious, possibly bigoted, probably xenophobic and ignorant. But since I'm very unlikely to ever stumble into downtown USA its really not something I care for.

I do apologise if my complete oblivion to your ideals upsets you :)

You're right, Ron. My mistake. The Declaration only speaks about certain inalienable rights.

mnottertail -> RE: Another Pointless Automobile Death... (9/11/2014 2:14:21 PM)

And it says that Governments (not individuals, not corporations, not militaries) are instituted to secure these rights.

It also says some other stuff, and who really gives a fuck, we won that war, got our independence it is over, on to the next thing.

Keep notice of the peroration:

And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

I expect to see the check for your full worth, in good standing in our treasury tomorrow, since you now see it is an oversight and you have the inalienable right to do that, and I have need of it and you pledge it to us.

Or are you picking and choosing at your whim the clauses you will condescend to support?
