Robert Heinlein was very good at hiding a philosophical message in entertainment. At least he was after he developed as a writer. His early works were way too preachy. The first book I ever read that didn't have pictures was "Starship Troopers". The movie totally missed the point which was the concept of personal responsibility for actions of the body politic. "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" and "Stranger in a Strange Land" are usually considered his best works. The most fun one, to me, was "Time Enough for Love, The Lives of Lazarus Long". "Glory Road" is a good 'reluctant hero" yarn. "The Number of the Beast" has a lot of "in" jokes relating to the scifi genre publishing community. I remember when a lot of the Heinlein juveniles were serialized in Boy's Life Magazine, official publication of the Boy Scouts of America. R.A.H. referred to writing as "banking the money machine". Lovely to meet a world famous author that didn't take himself uber seriously at all.
