I think he was on about Lee Rigby although he wasnt actually beheaded, or maybe the latest nutter in North London.

I assumed he was talking about Lee Rigby too. The nutcase who beheaded the woman in London seemed to have a thing against cats. His name is Nicholas Salvador - not, one might think, immediately suggestive of a Muslim name, though some papers have said he's a recent convert to Islam. Regardless, the police are stressing that this wasn't a terrorist-related incident.

That's cute, Polite. Make your admission that you regarded that attack differently than what is on the videos seem like an attack on me.

What's the difference Polite? The domestic terrorists didn't have a flag?

I'm really curious. Do you have any family members of the right age to serve in the military?

Which beheading in the UK was this, TH?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Lee_Rigby

I guess it didn't show up in the papers you read.

It didn't show up in *any* papers, TH, on account of he wasn't beheaded. The murder of Lee Rigby, however, was all over the news here, because it was an incident that shocked the nation. Do try to grow up, TH, please.

But, we aren't talking about building more embassies.

No, we're not. But as I understand it, we did try to negotiate for the release of the hostages and we failed. So now what? Put all the blame on the hostages for going there and forget about it? If it were a case where they had been found dead in an alley and there was no clear idea of what happened or why, I might be able to do that. But their deaths were used as a larger political statement against the West directly and non-Muslims indirectly. I think we'd be foolish to ignore that.

How much threat do they pose the US, by beheading two journalists?

What risk is there of creating another - perhaps worse - group if we go in guns a-blazing and destroy ISIS? Do we also bomb parts of London in our efforts to wipe out ISIS? Or, Germany? France? Where do we stop in our destruction of ISIS?

quote:

quote:

What, in your view, do the beheadings represent?

For now, exactly what ISIS wants us to think they represent...their intent to destroy non-Muslim civilizations, or at least, their unwillingness to accept non-Muslim cultures. Because I don't believe they'll stop threatening us if we simply leave them alone. Not even if we removed everything that represents western culture from their territory. What I'm trying to decide now is whether or not it may represent the Muslim version of the "ghost dance".

It doesn't matter what they want to do to us. You think Putin wants nothing but lollipops and cotton candy for us? North Korea? China? Iran?

What we are looking at is a group of radicals who allege they are following Islam (I'm neither supporting, nor refuting the accuracy of their allegation), and acting in very barbaric ways. But, is ISIS really a group, or does it ascend from the physical to the symbolic? Al Qaeda isn't gone. It's been decimated, but it's not gone. ISIS is one off-shoot. I don't think we can destroy al Qaeda or ISIS... ever. What those groups represent will always be around. Always.

Do you really believe that we'd end terrorism if we turned the Middle East into a sea of glass (or even if we killed only ISIS supporters and no one else)?

From your link:

"Car driven directly at soldier, then body dragged into road and almost decapitated"

So it wasn't a deliberate decapitation, as per some psycho-'religious' ritual. He was brutally murdered, TH: you don't need to try to make it 'more' than that.

ISIS still hasn't caught up with our ally and freedom fighting nation, SAUDI ARABIA.

Human Rights Watch says 19 people have been executed in the kingdom since August 4, including one for sorcery.

How much of a threat do they pose regardless of the two beheadings? Who really knows? And that's the problem. We really have no idea. But they seem to have a rather large, heavily armed organization that's smuggling oil, dealing in hostages, taking territory they're not entitled to, executing people at will, and pulling down some huge funding in the process. All the while, threatening to destroy western countries.

Don't get me wrong, DS. I'm not as excited as you may think to be dropping bombs and troops back into Iraq. I've got friends and family in the military that I'd much rather not see deployed. But I'm quickly getting to the point where I see no alternative in dealing with ISIS.

Just how much worse do you think it can get? Should we wait until they use a WMD?

quote:

Do we also bomb parts of London in our efforts to wipe out ISIS? Or Germany? France?

Now you're just being absurd. Until ISIS starts attacking and taking territory in Europe, I think those governments are capable of handling things inside their own borders just fine. Iraq and Syria apparently aren't.

quote:

Where do we stop in our destruction of ISIS?

It shouldn't be just about destroying ISIS. We shouldn't be abandoning any opportunity to get them to a negotiation table that could stop the violence. But until they understand we're not just going to let them run roughshod over anyone they want why would they stop?

quote:

It doesn't matter what they want to do to us.

Yes it does. Do you seriously think all their talk about destroying western culture while they build an army is just posturing? Should we have just ignored Kruschev when he threatened to bury us? How would our allies have liked that?

Nope. And you better get yourself ready because those wars are coming.

Yup. So your plan is to let them run around acting barbaric as long as they don't attack you?

Are you more pissed than usual you obnoxious shit.

The first line in your post makes no sense. Your second line is bullshit and your third line is a poor attempt at a strawman.

That said, if you really want a pissing contest at which of us has lost more family members in warfare, you can get fucked.

Are you sure there haven't been more ISIS beheadings?
    quote:

    Tribe members in Syria
During the first two weeks of August, Islamic State fighters killed 700 members of the al-Sheitaat tribe in Syria's Deir al-Zor province, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Many of them were beheaded, the organization said. Islamic State militants had been battling the tribe since seizing two oil fields in Syria in July.

    Yazidis in Iraq
Also in early August, as the group stormed through the homeland of Iraq's Yazidi minority group, reports emerged that Islamic State militants were beheading Yazidi villagers.
"One of the saddest stories was one of our relatives. They beheaded all his 15 family members in front of him and then took him with them," Abu Ali, one of tens of thousands of people who hid from militants on Iraq's Mount Sinjar, told Reuters.

That's at least 19 since "early August."
