I'm looking for one that's fast ish 17 inch to 15 inch with a sd memory card reader, a long battery life, starting at 5 hours and if there's any higher than that great, portable ish, the ones I was seeing were around 8 pounds or less, upgradeable storage and memory would be nice. Theones I looked at started at 4 gb memory and then 500 hard drive. I would love it to be able to p lay CDS on, and a built in webcam and microphone are nice, but not necessary. and I have a 500 dollar budget. So far I have looked at ACER ASUS HP. Looked on Fryes.com Walmart.com Amazon.com And NewEgg.

Is portable that necessary? A desk top is a bigger better pony.

Yes. I use ours sitting in bed, i don't want to have a desk and cords and yada yada. I'd like to be able to go out and use my laptop if i so wished, maybe at a park or outside in my yard, or starbucks, as rare as i go. If i go back to school, it might come in handy. No pun intended. I used ourfirst lt to do schoolwork on.

I have an HP Pavilion and don't really like it.

A colleague bought a refurbished Mac from Apple for a fraction of the retail price. She loves it.

Yes, thats a big draw, i don't know if it's still the case now but the biggest bummer was not a ton of software, has that changed?

Not anymore. Most productivity PC software is cross platform now. MMO's are making the transition, in a few years there will be no single OS software, and unless PC manufacturers make some big changes, they'll go the way of the dinosaur.
