I'm new to computer gaming and Sims and just loaded Sims 3 and several expansion packs to my pc. I was surprised to see desktop icons appear for every Sims 3 expansion pack. Isn't the purpose of expansion packs to add to Sims 3? If expansion packs add to Sims 3, shouldn't it all be combined under Sims 3? Why is it necessary to have separate desktop icons for each expansion pack as if they're all separate games? Or is it?

Gaming companies like the people that make Sims series are known for sloppy code... different teams for each exapnsion so they need to original core engine but are really separate games.
