juliaoceania -> Suffering a Brain Drain As We Age (7/12/2006 9:38:40 AM)

I have noticed that I have increasingly been making more and more grammar, usage, and spelling mistakes lately. I am really peeved at myself for it! The past couple of days I have had to edit my postings much more than usual, or I notice this way after it is too late to change it.

My Dom says to me last night... "You meant "cite" not "site" in that post... I am like "Duh, I'm such a dummy lately". I just noticed I spelled "pacifist" "passivist" in another post... no I am not on drugs, so what other excuse do I have other than laziness and my refusal to use Word to edit my postings?

My question for you, have you ever noticed that sometimes you just seem to have a brain bleed as you get older, like you can't remember how to spell a word, or you just forget grammar rules? I am really hard on myself about these things even though this is just a message board and I do not judge others as harshly as I judge myself.

Edited for typos... oh the irony

Julia....remember the "there, their and they're....effect, affect....to, too and two...." lol.  I don't really bug about usage...but when "women' is spelled, "Wimmins"........I sorta get the creepy crawlys.
PS. I've decided Julia...I'm coming to California. Call.

What were we talking about?

Oh yeah!  I do it, too.  My brain took off and left me lonely long ago.  I have to really watch myself to make sure I'm not posting my grammatical mistakes or complete nonsense, and often it slips through anyway.

Hi Julia,

I know how you feel, I experience the same thing with more frequency to the point that I finally had to see a neurologist.  Sometimes it's laziness sometimes there's a underlying cause.  For me its the latter or is that later.  It bugs me to no end, but I deal with it as best I can.  I have brain farts in addition to poor vision, which is one of the reasons you will see most of my postings with edititing.  Ain't the aging prosess just grand.  [:)]  Well, I may get dumber, but at least I get cuter with age.  [:D]

Julia, yes, I've noticed that a bit too!
I used to be a fairly good speller but in the last five years it's turned to crap!
I'm also making mistakes in grammer, punctuation etc.
Well, if that's they only thing I have to worry about...

cuddleheart50 -> RE: Suffering a Brain Drain As We Age (7/12/2006 4:42:33 PM)

I'm 50 yrs old...I use spell check ALL the time......and its only getting worse...

Lashra -> RE: Suffering a Brain Drain As We Age (7/12/2006 7:25:02 PM)

Yep it seems as soon as I hit 40 it began so I went and had a talk with my Doctor. She said in my case it was probably due to depression which I tend to suffer from time to time. Getting out and keeping my mind active seems to really help alot. But then there are just some days when theres naught to be done about it.

MistressLorelei -> RE: Suffering a Brain Drain As We Age (7/13/2006 8:52:09 AM)

I could function solely on memory... no lists, no appointment book.... until I had a baby 5 years ago.  I always say she sucked the brain cells out of me.... and I think it's true, but I can't remember.

twicehappy -> RE: Suffering a Brain Drain As We Age (7/13/2006 9:10:17 AM)

You mean something like this?

I go downstairs to bring Mistress a soda, i notice soda is low so i go to kitchen to get soda and see dryer is done so i fold the clothes and take them upstairs, when i get there she asks"Where is my soda?".

Lol, around here we call it AAADD, Age Affected Attenttion Deficit Disorder..........

Now what was the topic of this post?

proudsub -> RE: Suffering a Brain Drain As We Age (7/13/2006 3:53:54 PM)

Yep, when i hit 60 a few weeks ago everything went to hell, but now i have an excuse, i'm  expected to forget things.[:o]

Emperor1956 -> RE: Suffering a Brain Drain As We Age (7/13/2006 4:03:52 PM)

For what comfort it brings, Julia (and all), this is all normal stuff.  In fact, absent any organic disease, there are small but measurable cognitive losses as we age*.  Between 30-40 these losses are in reaction time, some short-term memory, etc. but are usually not noticable.  Between 40-50, there is an increased sense of loss of short term memory, difficulty with number retention, and a loss of "order processing" (tying a bow-tie is a perfect example of order processing...so is creating a simple rope dress).  These deficits are aggrevated by losses in visual acuity (WHERE ARE MY 'CHEATERS'?  I can't read the *&$$% menu!)  and in hearing (huh?).  Hormonal changes (in BOTH genders, yes!) can aggrevate these losses, as can certain illnesses such as sleep disorders.

The good news is that age and cunning will always beat out youth and stamina.  Remember that. *SMILE*  Even if it isn't true, we can go off doddering to the Home believing it.

E.

Oh yes, how familiar this sounds. I call my lapses "blonde moments" or sometimes "blond days" since I am a blonde and all the old jokes surrounding the "dumb blonde"

*Twicehappy, I have done the same and was getting the drink for myself as I was the one that was thirsty...DOH! [8D]

I suffer from CRS disease.  Seems to have become apparent somewhere around my fortieth birthday.  I say seems, because I Can't Remember Shit and I'm not entirely sure. [:D]
