This was posted in another group I vist. I thought there might be those here that would be interested.


Yahoo is now using something called "Web Beacons" to track Yahoo Group users around the net and see what you're doing & where you are going - similar to cookies.

Take a look at their updated privacy statement: http://privacy.yahoo.com/privacy

About half-way down the page,in the section on cookies you will see a link that says web beacons.

Click on the phrase web beacons.That will bring you to a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network." In this section you'll see a little "click here to opt out" link that will let you "opt-out" of their new method of snooping.

Once you have clicked that link, you are opted out.

Notice the "Success" message on the top of the next page.

Be careful because on that page there is a "Cancel Opt-out" button that, if clicked, will undo the opt-out.

Feel free to forward this to other groups.

Yahoo is recording every website and every group you visit.

Thanks for posting that. It's nice to know that a company is being so sneaky that they try to track you all over the web, even if it is just so they can try to target ads.

They're so sneaky they offer a way to opt-out.

I have to wonder if people would rather be paying for all the free services instead...

i have no problems logging in yahoo today rbobb77.

Maybe your caps lock key is enabled? Maybe you typoed the password or the account name/ID? OR keep in mind, if you attempt to log in at yahoo TOO many times with the wrong password the account will be temporarily locked as a security measure (sometimes 24hours ... sometimes longer). However, yahoo has had an issue over the past week of IDs not being logged off properly... hence the ID gets stuck .... and it would be rendered as unaccessable to you until the issue is sorted out. Leave the account alone for a while & use another account/ID in the mean time. Don't have another account/ID? Create one then , they are free and unlimited.

The services aren't free any more than network tv is free -- it is all paid for by advertisers. With other vendors available to offer such services simply for the right to put ads in front of us, it is fair to say that any attempt to charge would likely be met with an exodus of eyeballs and therefore a drop in revenue. If there is an ad-free vendor of such services that does charge, I have yet to hear of it.

And burying such an opt-out feature down in the fine print is sneaky, especially when the default is to track you around the net. I far prefer to be given the choice to opt-in to somebody spying on my net usage and to receive notice when such a feature is added.

Thank you so much for this word of warning, I went & opted out immediately after reading this. Master takes the utmost caution in keeping the computer protected but extra help is always appreciated. [:)]

Most websites use tracking cookies, this is nothing new. But for those of you that are "opting out" you should also be aware it is only specific to the browser you opt out on. Meaning if you choose the out feature at home, it still is on any other computer you use until you opt out on that one as well.
