I tend to pursue three sports/activities/pursuits at any one time in my life. And these have been (in order of my passion for them) the trinity of my physical exertions :

1. Roller skating - straight out of the 80s, started as a kid, and never stopped. I'd say I am near, or over, the 'magic' 10,000 hours on this one.
2. Running - post-college, 5k, fast and furious. Nothing beats the endorphin high of a flat-out finish at final distance.
3. Swimming - post-college, rhythmic, meditative, free from aqua-phobic predators (read: Panthers), low-impact, and full body.

I recently found my physical 'weakest link' in the arch of my left foot, which has - to my horror - precluded me from partaking in pursuits one and two. My 'aggressive' running technique seems be the root.

Whilst I convalesce - and perhaps beyond - I wanted to see where your physical passions lie, and what you might recommend to fill my injury-created void.

I would be very interested to hear why you love the sport or interest you do, how long you've been doing it, and how easy it would be for a beginner to start. Even if it would be strictly off limits for my currently injured state, am always happy to broaden my horizons. I also want to reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence of my injury, which likely means the abandonment of running :/

I think the only caveat on this topic would be that the sport or activity should raise your heart rate above its resting rate, and be at least semi-physical. For example: playing video games, whilst raising your heart rate, wouldn't widely be considered even semi-physical (let's ignore Wii, and Kinnect).

And we'll leave purely 'thinking' pursuits to another day.

Please be sure to use this thread's cloakroom to check your panthers, innuendo, and euphemisms - we'll take 'sexual activity' as a given.

You're not safe in the water. Apparently panthers do swim according to google.

But a swimming pool probably is safe.

The southeaster U.S. dialect often calls the mountain lion a "panther" but properly the panther is a south american beastie.

Interesting question, indeed.

When I was younger, I was very physically active. I played many sports and spent most of my free time outdoors engaging in some sort of sport.

Obviously, I'm older and time and health have taken some of my loves from me.

I recently went back to school, though, and as crazy as this may sound; I fully intend to try out for our baseball team. I don't know ... if Julio Franco could hit a home run off major league pitching at 49 years old, maybe I can get a base hit or two off a college junk baller?

I really enjoy hiking and, having moved up here into what passes for the Eastern portion of the country's idea of "mountains", I like to get out and do some walking/hiking in some nice scenery.

Though, when I was younger, I swore I would never be "that guy". I have been playing a bit of golf; mostly driving range stuff so there's not much walking but you do tend to swing more frequently and that does raise one's heart rate.

Believe it or not: music. I recently got myself a nice drum set and added it to my studio. Drumming can raise a heart rate but truth be told; when I play the guitar or bass, I'm usually "throwing shapes" and using parts of my body to keep time so there's an aerobic element, there.

Screen captures (and pissing on shadows) still RULE! Ya feel me?

God I miss running.
When I was younger, and still had full use of both my knees,I would run for miles through the open desert.
Even thou I was a tubby bastard(nearly 300 pounds),I could still run a mile in a lil over 3 minutes and continue running for miles more...
BBBBBBBut then I busted up my knee,so now I'm lucky to run a few feet before it buckles and I keel over in intense pain....Damn joints..
So now I settle for bicycling(as it's far less impact on my knee)and swimming. But nothing will compare to the feeling of hurdling over rocks and shrubs with wild abandon....I also dabble in wrestling and boxing, altho I'm amateur at best(you'd be surprised how hard boxing is on the knee),but I'm one hell of a brawler(I fight dirty).

I love nature, and go on hikes when ever I can,but I'd hardly call it sport..Heck,most the time I'd call it commuting lol

FR~

My three most exhilarating sporting activities are -
1) lounging on the sofa.
2) lazing in bed.
3) soaking in the bath.

Anything else is just waay too exhausting for me.

ETA: we don't allow any fucking swear words in our house; "walk" is a banned word.

I alternate walk/run 5 miles a day (weather permitting) and work out 3 - 4 days a week. I swim whenever I can and love hiking through the mountains especially in the autumn. Hawk Mountain in PA is one of my favorite hiking spots during migration season, I absolutely love hawks so I get both passions in one spot, hiking and hawk watching all at once.

Walking/running I've been doing since I was in high school so that would be 40 years. Working out at the gym about 20 years. Hiking the mountains and swimming I've been doing my whole life. Living at a lake during the summer months, swimming was something we were taught when we were babies and hiking I've done since I was a little kid, it was a favorite pastime of my parents so we kids grew up hiking often.

I recently started doing hot yoga and taking deep end water aerobics classes. You get a good muscle work out and good cardio workout from both of them. Something to check into, there's no pressure and no impact to your feet with either of them.

Famous last words.

My top three as of late (whichchanges every few months) are as follows;
1; Running a mile as a warm up then powerlifting, including supersets. Weightlifting is my all time favorite. I can only replace with insanity. It sucks you have injury, one of my greatest/only fears.
2; Waterskiing or tubing on the lake. (Ridiculous back workout)
3; Hiking, we have some of the best hiking/bike trails out here.

I have also had as deep loves; Volleyball, practice for as much as 4 hours a day. Biking (of course). Swimming, I also do this thing called pool pilates you might like to try; Made me lose 15 lbs in 3 weeks post my first round of insanity. Crossfit; yes, I know, overpriced hipster crap, but the fundamentals are there for amazing success stories (Snookie is a testament); crossfit is big on team effort, encouragement, muscle confusion ergo better retention, and optimal time/speed and overall wellness training. Unlike my first love lifting, it is focused on many areas of improving the body's mechanics, not just strength.
What I hope to do more of;
Yoga, I need balancing work for sure and it will probably optimize my workouts even further. I'm big on being outside and in nature so anything incorporating that= I'm game.

We walk. Lots of pretty places to walk around here.
The younger set goes mountain biking and mountain climbing. The Shawangunks are young mountains, so lots of sheer cliffs for ice climbing. Some of the best climbers in the nation do so here during winter.

Show jumping, over 6' fences gets the heart rate up. As does boxing cows.

I basically do inline skating, been skating for 22 years now, longest distance in one skate I ever skated was 128km. But regularly, about 30km each skate. Love skating to death! Will never give this up. Nothing beats feeling of speed on wheels. Also, skating is a zero impact sport, I never get ache or pains or injuries from it ever, UNLESS I fall down of course.

Because of my love for skating, I hate running, as I can never reach the speed that I skate with running.

And do not like cycling, because, it's not a full body workout and the feeling is different. You're sitting your ass the whole time and not really moving.

But other thing that I have take up just recently is hiking, just 1 year ago. I've always enjoyed step climbing, and running up slopes for higher intensity work out. And I realise hiking gives me all that, with fresh air inclusive and you get to see cute monkeys and squirrels and snakes. Perfect combination!

Now I am just trying to evolve to trail running, as I can't use my skates on the trail, and I love how the faster you run on trail, the more challenging it is to dodge and handle obstacles on the trail.

Says you,I rarely use my seat, most the time I'm standing on my pedals to push more weight down,or using my legs as "rear shocks".

That's pretty much what I have to do when I use a bicycle. But it's big and bulky and doesn't let you take tight narrow small sharp turns as fast as you can on skates. F1 feel!

Curling is my sport.

My prior Dom introduced me to it about 8 years ago, and I've been hooked ever since. The beauty of the sport is that it can be as hardcore or mellow as the people you are playing with, and it's played by people of every age group.

It's a terrific social sport, and I would suggest checking it out if you have a venue near you.

I have been running since I was 12 or 13 but over the years I've had so much trouble with shin splints, I've cut right back. I've also been told that my knees are going to give me trouble at some point in my life.

I've always been sporty. Brought up with horses, I've spent a lot of my career working with the beasts.
I'm a keen swimmer, I regularly play squash and tennis and I'm a keen cyclist (used to be a TT rider). This year I cycled behind the Tour de France across France.

The one thing I've always done and can't imagine ever giving up is climbing and this is what I'd recommend if you want to do something exhilarating and stay fit. You will of course need a partner but I'm sure you would find some pretty woman willing to belay you and show you the ropes down at your indoor climbing wall. Real rock is obviously better and much more exhilarating but indoor walls are going to push you to your limit for some time. You will need to initially hire rock boots and a harness. All the problems I've had with my feet from running have never proved a problem wearing rock boots.

Climbing is much easier if your slim, though you will need lean body and arm strength. You also need to be supple but I'm guessing you are if you are a runner. When you climb regularly you get lean muscular arms and legs and incredibly strong fingers. You obviously can't have a fear of heights and you have to have quite a bit of stamina. If you don't want to bother with a harness and a partner, you could try bouldering.

Edited to say, sailing. We have a yacht and we sail a lot.
Also down hill skiing but that is obviously seasonal.

I am much obliged for your responses, a lot of great suggestions. Thank you all. I think I am going to give climbing and cycling a whirl, in the short-term. I now can't swim everyday knowing panthers might be lurking. Climbing and cycling into the breach!

Dankie!
