This ''head-butt'' in the chest their trying to demoralize him with is absolutely nonsense. Even soccer is filled with violence and emotion. I see it as no different as a late hit on the quarterback or a hard foul from Ron Artest. I read this morning some international racism organization is now involved with a ''tit for tat'' scenario brewing.

Status: offline 		It was worse than a late hit on a quarterback (many of those are questionable), definitely worse than a hard foul in basketball (which are usually legal)--and even more serious than a flagrant foul from Ron Artest, because it immediately resulted in his ejection.  Suppose you were, say, Jerry Rice.  Would you be happy about being ejected from the Super Bowl in your final professional season because you headbutted an opponent away from the ball?

I don't wish offend you, but it's hard for me to agree with you when I grew up with Jack Tatum and ''LT'' being my favorite players in the game. And actually.... I don't think it was worse than a flagrent / late hit. Can you say ''Charles Haley''   I've got some old vhs tapes I ought to send you. Guys like Ron Artest, Zidane and Haley are good for the game.


By the way... the NFL hasn't been the same since LT retired. And Artest is the best addition to the NBA since Jordan and Magic left. HAR!

I'm just old enough to have seen Jack Tatum towards the end of his career, and Lawrence Taylor for all of it.  They weren't dirty players.  At least LT definitely wasn't, and I don't believe Tatum was, either.  (The famous hit on Stingley was completely legal.)  So I don't think you can compare what Zidane did with a bone-crunching tackle by an old-school NFL linebacker.  Hard, legal players are good for the game.  Little weasels who deliberately take cheap shots--like Ron Artest--are not good for the game.  You really think Ron Artest is good for the game?  Look at where the Pacers are now.  He gutted that franchise just by being a selfish little prick.

Edited to add: I think DWYANE WADE is good for the game.  Ask any general manager whether he'd rather have Dwyane Wade or Ron Artest.  It's a no-brainer.

Tatum unloaded a hellish amount of hits that were way over the line lol. Between him and Ted Hendricks, I'm surprised there wasn't more carnage. Very talented players though.

Football players should either learn to keep their tempers or not be allowed to play. They are doing a job and u cant go around fighting with ur work colleagues.
Im glad he got sent off and his career ended in disrepute - he deserved it.

Status: offline 		I was absolutely shocked when he head-butted the opponent. It was not trying to get the ball away, it was all in anger. It was vicious. There are millions of people like me who had never heard of him before and that is my one big impression of him. I might watch one soccer game a year and it would be the World Cup final. I think what he did was a disgrace and he should be fined also. It was also rediculous how he blamed the opponent by saying the opponent said bad things. There is a huge difference between words and physical violence. If he had at least owned up to his wrongdoing I would have gained a little respect for him. As it is I know I won't be seeing him on a box of wheaties anytime soon!

There's tons of speculation as to what Materazzi said to earn the head-butt; Sepp Blatter, head of FIFA, has been dropping hints that if Materazzi said something racist to provoke it -- as the rumours all claim -- then Italy could be kissing the World Cup goodbye.

[hopefully, they won't kiss with the tongue again; seeing players lick the World Cup was kinda gross.  ;p]

No matter what happens, I don't think this is going to tarnish Zidane's career.  He's a hero to the French, and outside of his temper, he's an amazing player, and I'll definitely miss him.

Artest is awesome but with a quirky personality. Carlisle is a crapy coach. Look at the Pacers and Artest when he played for Bird and Larry Brown. Anyways.....I parallel a guy like Artest with TO. When you play for Mariucci and Andy Reid there's all sorts of personality problems; when you play for Parcells, you take the Cowboys to the super bowl HAR!  I never said Artest wasn't hard case, but he's awesome and people like to watch him.

If Zidane would have wanted to hurt that guy, he woulda went for the head.

PS - As a huge Niner fan.... I can remember quite a few times when LT took late/cheap shots at Young. And if I remember correctly, wasn't it LT who gave Steve Bono a concussion when he drilled him after he ran ten yards out of bounds. That stuff is just part of the game….

And what about Randy Johnson {Mariners} throwing at batters who've ''went yard'' when Johnson was having a bad night?

Football isn't social work, it's ritual warfare. Amongst many football fans he's enhanced his reputation. Not for him feigning and diving like the Portugese, he put one on his opponent. I would have been happier if there was bruising to be seen but I doubt he landed very heavily, more that Materazzi made the most of it to get Zidane sent off.

Status: offline 		At the end of the day, taunting like this goes on in practically every game - he should have remembered he was playing his last ever game in the finals of the biggest sporting event on Earth.  If the comments Materazzi said were so bad, Zidane should have ignored it, helped France win the World Cup first, then settled his argument with him after the final whistle.

That way, Zizous would have got twice the revenge.
