We've had some disheartening police-related threads lately, or so it seems. Hence a trio of heartening tales. Oregon officers recognized for acts of kindness http://www.kirotv.com/news/news/oregon-officers-recognized-acts-kindness/nhgzB/ Officer Patrick Kinney, responding to a domestic violence call, learned a victimized pregnant woman was suffering financially and went out of his way to gather bread, diapers, milk, fruit, and eggs for her. Officer Jason Griggs provided dining chairs to a young mother in need so that her children would have a place to eat, after watching a boyfriend remove his property from the home during a civil stand-by call. Sgt. Michael Kuehn brought food to a hungry woman and provided a person suffering from mental illness with a new pair of boots, after observing his pair was in a bad condition.

This is nothing unusual it happens all the time. Police officers in my area are always on the corners collecting donations for a charity... I have seen officers pick up drunks off the streets and give them rides home without tickets or arrests... I have seen many acts of kindness and compassion towards African Americans by our local police even after two of them were brutally murdered by the same. But if not for the police who else would there be to blame? Could it be those that allow their children to roam the streets 3 o'clock in the morning...Could it be those that don't make their children attend school... Could it be those who complain about the police but refuse to cooperate to solve crimes in their neighborhoods... Could it be those that do not teach their children respect for the law... Could if be those that complain about their elected officials... but refuse to take the time to vote... Could it be those that complain they are watched when they enter a store..just because they commit the majority of shop lifting .... Could it be those that complain they get stricter sentences for crime... yet commit the vast majority of crime in America in relation to the percent of population...Could it be those that complain about the lack of blacks on the police forces... yet do not apply for the jobs...Could it be those that turn a blind eye to the killing of their children by other blacks...every damn day but refuse to protest that fact... I could go on and on but already I feel the " He's a racist" assholes circling. The point I am making and I believe African Americans need to face is the police are not the cause of their problems. Change needs to occur in attitude within many African American communities before those outside can be blamed for their problems. I think there does need to be change in how the police respond to violence and disrespect and shooting that unarmed child simply because he would not move out of the street is a crime. It is worthy of protest and I hope prosecution if the evidence points that way.... BUT... this isolated incident and the number of white police to black is not the root cause of their problems. Butch PS...dcnovice I do apologize for the tone of my post. I know my comments are not the direction you intended for this thread to follow. But I feel the above needs to be said and heard by African Americans with the protesters mindset... just as their very valid protests need to be heard... understood...and acted upon... by the majority that do not experience the frustrations of African Americans in their day to day dealings with their local police forces.

But you did refer to the recent threads concerning police as the heart of the problem...By the way I refereed to police I didn't identify race either. There is an article in the Post Dispatch by a black officer in Ferguson... you should read it and you will see it makes no difference to blacks protesting if police are black or white... it is just police. Yet in the same breath they complain there are not enough black police but few apply for the jobs... and... they call blacks that are employed as police uncle tom's. To me they are lashing out at police while denying and ignoring their contributions to their own problems. I think it is important to point out that police kindness as you linked is not uncommon even in Ferguson and most surrounding police departments. Most are good people just trying to put food on the table for their families... they wear body armor because they want to come home to those same families. They have been shot at... burned with molotov cocktails.. pummeled with rocks, hit, punched, kicked, spit on, yet not one police officer retaliated... I call that kindness... how about you? In my home town police... both black and white... host barbecues and fund raisers for low income citizens of all colors and are still the targets of hate in our African American community. In the last ten years two police, three councilmen and women, a public works director, and the Mayor have been murdered by blacks... you don't see whites marching in protest and looting businesses. Most understand the murderers do not represent blacks in our town... Blacks should also realize the tragedy in Ferguson does not represent policemen who put their lives on the line every day for the very people spitting on them... pitiful. Butch
