defiantbadgirl -> Please help. I need advice fast. (10/16/2014 6:07:07 AM)

When I was in a job interview yesterday, I gave a bad explanation when the interviewer noticed and mentioned the length of time I was unemployed before getting re-hired at my previous job (the interview was for a second job). I mumbled something about leaving the job for medical reasons and said my husband was working during that time. I didn't even mention attending college during that time. Stupid, I know. (During the time I wasn't working, I had 2 major cancer related surgeries and two smaller surgeries, attended college for awhile, and didn't finish because I couldn't pass college algebra). I should've said I had 2 major surgeries (without mentioning cancer) and decided to let my body heal for awhile while taking a few classes. If questioned about not finishing college, I could've always said I wanted to pay down student loans. Instead, I froze up. Stupid nerves, stupid emotional trauma over cancer grrr. I can't believe I froze up like that. I really need this second job. The job I have now is part time. The job I'm trying to get is full time. The interviewer said she would contact me today and tell me if I was selected for the job or if someone else was. Should I call her first, tell her I feel that I didn't answer her question adequately, and say what I should've said in the interview or should I just leave it alone and hope for the best to avoid sounding desperate? How can I fix this?

Hey there,

I'm sorry that I don't have a particularly optimistic take on this, if I'd interviewed someone and they called after the time I said I would have made a decision to elaborate on a response they'd given I'm afraid it would be more likely to hinder than help.

You've probably already thought of this (so please forgive me if this sounds patronising!) but I'd recommend that you prepare answers to these questions, and (if you can) do some practice interviews with friends.

The other really flipping important thing is not to let this wobble shake your confidence - Everyone has the odd wobble when interviewing

No one can answer that question but you. We have no idea what kind of job, who was doing the interviewing and what kind of person they are, etc.

You have to make the decision for your self, so get busy. No matter what, just count this as a learning experience.

I believe if the job is meant to be yours, you'd have it.
Sometimes, it's about chemistry too between you and the interviewer.

If not, maybe this is to prepare you for a better job to come, the failure in this interview will make you much better for the next one.

It's a call center job, something I have several years of experience in. Unfortunately, it's the only call center in town and the nearest city that has them would be an hour commute each way. It's also one of the few types of jobs I can do with my physical limitations. The rest of the interview wasn't too bad I don't think. The interviewer had me fill out a paper application because she said she wanted my signature to run a background check. There was no handshake at the beginning or after the interview. I don't know if I was the one who was supposed to initiate that.

I always initiate handshake. Big warm smile and initiate handshake as it's all about showing confidence.

thishereboi -> RE: Please help. I need advice fast. (10/16/2014 7:03:52 AM)

If it were me I would probably call and try to explain. I would figure that if she had decided to hire me, then she already likes me and shouldn't change her mind based on this. If she had already decided to hire someone else it's not going to hurt because I already didn't get the job and showing her that I am really interested might change her mind.

Fingers crossed! Who knows! You just might have passed! Sometimes, it's all about chemistry, it really is. Sometimes you can screw up in an interview and still get chosen. And sometimes, you thought you did fabulous with good feedback but still don't get chosen.

Hey!

So.. if you think you might be applying for jobs at the same place again, then yeah I'd suggest you make the call

Your years of relevant experience was clearly readable on your Resume, Yes??
Many interviewers make allowances for nerves.
If you presented yourself well, your Resume would tell them of your experience.
As for the paper application, that would usually go for a graphology (handwriting analysis) check.

I personally wouldn't chase it up. If I were interviewing, I would interpret that as desperation.

I would leave it as-is and hope you pass the graphology.

This is the part where it really differs. Sometimes desperation is good. Sometimes it's bad. The interviewer is a human being who will have her personal biases, she might be the type who will sympathize with desperation or the type who will get turn off by it.

Hard to tell. Hope OP sixth sense is useful to her in deciding which way to go.

My gut tells me, leave it alone too though. Sometimes over explaining makes things worst. Especially who knows, maybe she already got the job! Then too much extra information changes things.

MariaB -> RE: Please help. I need advice fast. (10/16/2014 8:36:14 AM)

I interview for call centres all the time. Someone with prior experience is usually a bonus; a clear talker who sounds cheerful and confident is crucial. The thing about call centres is, we don't expect people to hang around for years. The best get head hunted, the average last a year or two if that. What I would be looking for is someone who clearly had that capability to generate leads/sales and possibly, if required, close deals. Can you make money for the company? that's really all they are interested in. Two weeks with a good lead generator is better than a month with a poor one.

If you don't get the job its unlikely to be because of your time off and more because you didn't come over well. Mumbling is never good at an interview :(

DarkSteven -> RE: Please help. I need advice fast. (10/16/2014 9:50:00 AM)

Nope. You want to make a positive impression, not remind the interviewer of your floof.

Contact her, and mention how much you liked her and the company's energy during the interview. Mention that you'd be happy to work at a place that drew upon your previous call center history.
