I live in the state of South Carolina, Our Governor Nikki Haley is a Hindu woman. Her father is clearly a Sikh who wears a turban. So very obviously her family has not been here over 100 years, and was not living in this state during the Civil war.

If you know the South (Like it or not, if you think its crazy or not) we are still fighting the civil war. The state's Attorney General James L Petigru is quoted as saying "South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum." in 1860.

My family's farm was in direct line of Sherman's March to the sea. They owned no slaves, they never sent sons to the war. They were simple dirt farmers, but that never stopped Sherman's Troops from Attacking, Looting and Burning my family's farm to the ground.

Now our lovely Governor, says that she sees no reason to remove the Confederate flag from the state house grounds, because "Well No CEO has ever complained about it before" .

Simply put, this woman has no family or connections to this state during "The War of Norther Aggression" as we like to call it. What does it matter to her?? Oh wait, that's Right we have a midterm election next month, where she could be voted out of office. She is trying her best to play to the Good Old Boys that run this state.

I for one don't care, even though I have more of a connection to this state than most, and more to the civil war than most. But I don't give a crap, why is this woman trying to get into this discussion!

I don't tell the German's how to talk about ww 2 do I?

Well in the first place, the Civil War was not fought over slavery. After that..........

Nope, not states rights either, thats the other side of the coin from slavery.

Slavery was still legal, and many states had seceded for some time, the states had their rights.

The issue was all over the South Carolinians (or if you want, the Confederacy) seizing a federal reservation, Ft. Sumter, nothing else.

It became her issue when she became Governor. SC issues are her issues. If her response was "My family wasn't here in the Civil War so I can't make a decision" she would've been criticized even more.

I know nothing else about this governor so I'm not saying anything for or against her, but this line of reasoning is ridiculous. She could honestly be pandering to the corporations to keep her job. She could honestly want to keep the flag for other reasons (state history? I got nothin'.). I don't know but do know she would've had to say/do something to keep up the illusion that she does something to justify her salary.

You are correct, you don't know SC Politics, Think Dukes of Hazard on a MASSIVE scale. Boss Hogg is not only in charge, but he is in every single country government, school house, business etc.

90% of the CEO's in this state are graduates of The Citadel, Go read Lords of Discipline and you will understand what I mean.

But this isn't about talking; this is about continuing to fly a symbol. People in Germany don't fly the swastika as part of their heritage. On the contrary, they banned it.

If you want to continually remind yourself of dark moments in your history instead of moving on, get your own private flag and fly it.

It is also less than politically astute to state that the only people whose opinions you care about are the CEOs. Come election time, someone will be pointing out that she doesn't care about the ordinary citizens.
