smileforme50 -> Internet Schminternet (10/20/2014 2:47:53 PM)

I hear all the time about how people can find out so much about you on the internet "with just a few keystrokes".

Well....if it's so damned easy.....how come I can't find the simple freaking address of a friend? I wanted to mail him something and I would call him except he's going to be out of "cell network zone" for the rest of the week.

I typed his name into a couple of websites and it came up.....but they all want me to PAY to get this address!!!

Whatever happened to the good ol' days when all you needed to do was open a phone book?? This has convinced me that if anyone ever wants to look all kinds of personal information on ME.....they are just going to be wasting a hell of a lot of money.

Any suggestions on how to look up someones address without having to pay for it?

Nope....same thing. Gives me his name and a list of town that he may have lived in....but no address unless I pay for it.

I usually have good results with Whitepages. It allows for name search and reverse phone.

HOW???? I just tried to use whitepages and that was the worst one of them all. I just sat here for 10 minutes while it gathered all kinds of informaiton....job history, criminal background, marriage history....and then they want $22+ for it!!! .....but I don't want ANY of that. All I want is his f--ing mailing address!!

why do I have to go through all this crap and spend money to just get a mailing address???

poise -> RE: Internet Schminternet (10/20/2014 4:09:04 PM)

I've never paid a penny, and usually come up with address and phone numbers.
I'll be happy to help you search if you like, for free! Or try other sites, such as
Pipl, etc. Don't bypass things such as obituaries and what not that may come up
in google searches. Sometimes you have to go around a few circles to get the info.

poise -> RE: Internet Schminternet (10/20/2014 4:24:16 PM)

On second thought, I'd advise against sending him something when he
hasn't shared his address with you. It may come across as stalker-ish,
and freak him out a bit. Besides, if he is out of cell coverage for a week,
he most likely isn't home to receive whatever it is you want to send.

(If he's "out of cell network for the rest of the week", it's a gut feel {but I'm going with it}, he probably won't be near his USPS mail box either).

(Uhhhhh......because you don't have a White Pages phone book in your house for the city he lives in).

(I don't think "Schminternet" is a real word).

Well...no it wouldn't....but you don't know him or our relationship.....that's ok

I got his address from his girlfriend.....problem solved. But still....It still shouldn't be next to impossible to get an address.

MercTech -> RE: Internet Schminternet (10/31/2014 2:37:36 PM)

FYI... Intelius pay service hijacked the white pages website. For free address search of addresses and phone numbers listed with phone companies go to:

https://www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org/whitepages/

The pay services are very unreliable at trying to find someone.

Extravagasm -> RE: Internet Schminternet (10/31/2014 5:57:03 PM)

US paper phone books stopped being general listings last century. Since then, they only list their actual customers in their white pages. (How would they get others, once the phone companies were broken up?) So people without land lines mainly aren't in paper white pages. . . addresses, or otherwise. That's most people nowdays. Many voice-over IP land lines don't even get you into paper white pages.

Sorry that likely wouldn't do it either.

Google is the best way to start your search for people... then branch from there. If you want just one aspect, bad enough. . pay the $4.95 query version. They usually offer a surprise 2 for one at the last minute. Do NOT join the memberships on any query sites.
BTW, information (incl white pages) was not really free in the day. You paid well for it in monthly service fees for old phone systems.
Yellow pages were free, and still are, due to advertising.

What is free today, is Facebook. A whole new century of people communicate with each other on FB, both privately and publically, at their discretion. Its not just for kids and vain people. Business and professionals regularly use it. It is sooo much better than the old reference systems people yearn for, because you can now find people when lacking the exactly correct spelling of their name. In fact you can find people without even their last name at all, if they're in your city and you can identify their face.
Then among friends, it allows for fairly quick answer on mailing addresses or cell numbers.. of course on a need to know basis, thru FB private inboxing.

That's IF they have a Facebook page and IF they have a picture of themselves on their page.

I just tried that with a friend whose full address and (quite unusual) name and I know: it came up with 'not found'.

Why *should* people be so easy to find, anyway? Privacy, freedom - all that stuff, anyone?

Extravagasm -> RE: Internet Schminternet (11/1/2014 6:17:09 PM)

WHITE pages = only address of LAND lines.

Likely has a cell phone, like most people today.

I know its hard to remember here in the states, but white pages, only list Land Line Customers. That makes them different from Query database sites. White page pools, dont mine info from other sources. Query databases do. Also Google (or your browser) will show you if it appears in text somewhere outside of databases. A site called Spokeo does a fair job of combining most of these functions at one place.

WHITE pages = LAND line customers (and then not even all land line customers, cuz of VOIP type land lines.)

The format there has been changing a lot lately, but Whitepages is still my go-to site, and I pulled an address very easily on Friday - you just have to watch which selections you make from the list they offer.

I'm not really saying that they "should" be that easy to find. What prompted me to start the topic is how I constantly hear about how EASY it is for people to find out extremely personal information about people.....when I can't even find a simple address.
