So..I'm knitting some fingerless gloves for my brother.
He only has three fingers on his right hand, like this: (If you are weird or squeamish about missing extremities don't look) http://i.imgur.com/UgICEPY.jpg

Here is the pattern I was planning on using:http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-knit-close-fitting-fingerless-gloves/
These are for xmas...would you recommend that I have him measure his hand at the widest part and see? I mean I assume that will kinda blow the surprise...but how would you recommend I adjust this pattern so it will fit his hand? I'd say its about 3/4 the size of an average hand...

Any input appreciated...

What type of yarn are you using? The type of yarn you use will determine the "give".

3/4 the size of an average man's hand, or ladies' hand? I see from the pattern that it gives instructions for a ladies L/men's M, which may be a good place to start... I'm with you, I wouldn't want to give away the surprise of it's not necessary... the good part about gloves like this is that they are not traditionally "fitted".

I recomend you buy some jersey gloves, take them over to him, size them, pin them, cut and sew them. After you've cut the one glove to the size you need, use it for a pattern and then give him the jersey gloves. Come christmas you can have a perfectly knit set for him without the guess work.

Ah, I forgot to mention, he lives in MN. I'm in NH. So while that would be ideal, it isn't feasible. And I would do that via mail and have him pin them, but is hugely awful at using the postal service and follow thru is not his strong point.

I'm not sure what kind of yarn yet...
I'm pretty partial to chunky pieces.
I actually wonder if the lady at the shop I buy it at would have some advice, I know she does some classes. I halved the pattern before and it didn't fit at all. Then I never tried again.

Does his other hand have all five fingers? If so, I'd do that hand first. Then start the second glove and then when you finish the cuff of that glove, adjust your stich count by increasing on one side to make the thumb, and decrease every other row on the other side until you have the width for the two remaining finger, minus the stitches from the thumb gusset (usually about 20 stitches). Hope that helps.

I know NOTHING about knitting, so I'm not sure what lunacy is prompting me to weigh in.

Could you make two ordinary gloves then "stitch up" (or the knitting equivalent) the unneeded openings?

Does he have access to a flatbed scanner?

Have him scan his hand with a tape measure in the picture. And buff up your 2d to 3d spacial relations talents.

Or, have him do a tracing with measurements and fax it to you.

Yah, he is a broke 22 year old musician...I'm not even sure he has toilet paper...but I'll see if I can get his girl to help me out a bit since she's semi responsible.

If you have a knitting store near you (something a little more specialized than a "Michaels") that may be a really good place to start. I find it's a lot easier to work with someone in person than over the computer.
