http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2014/11/03/3587801/district-court-declares-secular-humanism-a-religion/

I find the decision quite interesting. The judge based his decision on the Constitutional point that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.

Non-religious people now have a religion, and are now entitled to everything that goes along with that.

If you really want religious freedom, then you must be willing to accept it for every religion, not just yours.

I wonder how many "religious holidays" they have... [:D]

It's stuffed full of irony, this ruling. I've noticed just how many (and how strenuously), theists have argued that atheists have 'a religion' against the increasingly exasperated denials of atheists who've said, so, so often, things like, 'No, we just don't buy your stories, that's all' (etc., etc, etc). It seems really screwy, to me, that you only get left the *hell* alone if you let them believe that you're actually more like them than you are. Hey well. It moves things along, I suppose, in some nutty way.

I think it was borne out of the idea that they should have a unified voice more than anything, it makes complete sense to me.

National Nothing Day

How about....

National think for yourself day?

or

National rational thinking day?

or

National anti brainwashing day?

or

National common sense day?

All this atheism is a religion stuff is just a facile argument by believers to try to bring atheists down to their level of thinking.

Atheists are not anti god, they just want the human race to move on

The decision is appalling. It makes it easier for the fundies to try and get the theory of evolution (and other scientific theories) out of science classes and replaced with their creationism/intelligent design claptrap.

Reality is not a religion. Fiction is a necessary component of any, and every, religion.

I'll believe that when I can open up a tax exempt "church" of Atheism.

That, unfortunately, goes against the whole idea of religion which is that your particular brand of nonsense is the only "true" religion.

Faith: Firmly held beliefs in the absence of supporting evidence.
How to define religion that obviously includes all the Angry Desert Gods, salvation by a zombie, hidden manipulators in the sky, et. al. and still include the Sutras of Buddha on how to think and use consciousness clearly?
The cited court case illustrates two cautions.
Lord, protect me from your followers!
Don't argue with the retarded. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Odd then that an Atheist brought this to Federal court, no?

How are they going to do that?

So, people aren't free to believe if they want to?

Based on this decision, I am fairly certain that you could do just that.

Would you care to elaborate or shall I just use my vivid imagination?

TheHeretic -> RE: Atheists Have Their Own Religion (11/3/2014 9:28:39 PM)

Agnostics might get a pass, but ultimately, atheism is just as faith-based as any deistic ideology.

Now now, you were supposed to laugh at his wit and comment on how ignorant anyone with a belief system is, not bring facts into the discussion.

as to the op ... if they want to form a religion and build tax free churches more power to them. Why not, they already have the preaching part down pat.

It would be odd if an atheist group had brought this suit, but it was in fact a lawsuit brought by a humanist faction, as explained in the article.

You were successfully snookered by the reporter's title of "Atheists Score Major Win," when the word "atheist(s)" was only given as an adjunct to the broader humanist faction in the article. This sort of chicanery is SOP for the media, and their (accurate, as it turns out) P.T. Barnum assessment of their audience.

To think that nonsense such as this does anything but further murk the notion of freedom of religion from the state or the state from religion is delusion.

It doesn't matter how much they "want to let everybody play," this is not much different than Elizabeth I's (or her handlers') implementing of the Anglican Church in such way that what was once heresy is now treason.

Think about it.

The whole notion of any 'belief' or 'faith' system, or even worse, a 'non-faith as politically expedient faith' doesn't belong in government, in any twisted way, shape, or form.

Edwynn -> RE: Atheists Have Their Own Religion (11/3/2014 10:22:47 PM)

I sometimes think that the Jewish faith has been more 'robust' than others in Western countries precisely because it had no government to enforce that faith for 2,000 years.
