Interesting idea, one which has been kicked around in Canadian intelectual circles for a looooooong time.

Good idea/bad idea? Not entirely sure, but since the two economies are so closely integrated, I suspect the slight loss of monetary independance would hardly be noticed by either country (other than the pride issue).

That being said, there is a legal impediment to a single currency: Only the Crown has the right to print/issue money, not the Gvt, therefore my understanding is that it would be unconstitutional in Canada, however I may be wrong about that.

Given the difference in the size of their respective economies, the Amero would be the dollar with another name. The other thing, it would effectively reduce Canada to a province or at least a shattle state of the US.

The whole point of the euro in Europe was to begin the political unification of the continent, a reason why many Brits didn't want to take part. Everyone in the euro has to struggle to get the Euro Central bank to listen to the plight of their economies because the Eurobank is responsible for the Euroland economy as a whole. Even an economy as important as Germany's, they are not in control, simply because the Eurobank has to be independent so other states keep the faith and give credibility to the stock markets. With regard to US and Canada with an Amero currency, it will be the US central bank that calls the shots and Canada would have to just shut up. It would be farewell Canada.

Just thinking, with the rise of China into superpower status by the middle of the century (If all goes to to Chineese plans.) it might be wise for the US to enlarge but would it be in the interests of Canada to be part of a superpower?

Why the hell should Canadians tie blend their currency to an about to crash currency?
We will have a bad enough time when the US dollar goes down. Don't want to have the same currency. It also would be harder to keep a higher social safety net level when the currencies are tied that tight.

I will fight any common currency with the US as things are now.

Just think...If we all merged, opened the borders and became ''one people'' , all the Canadians who can't speak French would be less embarrassed.

The other good thing I see happening…. is that the folks in Quebec would now be able to get MTV, HBO and Howard Stern, instead of all those French channels.

And we as Americans would have a chance to become indoctrinated into our first separatist movement. Maybe that would put us over the edge when we try to overthrow the neocons.

So it’s not all bad…. there's quite a few good things that would come out of a  new union between us.

I recommend to resist the single currency with all fangs and claws. We Europeans have been extremely stupid and gullible. A local currency is freedom, a single currency is slavery.
