ORIGINAL: Evanesce I would suggest that you rent a few episodes of "Upstairs, Downstairs." It's vanilla, but gives a reasonably accurate portrayal of the heirarchy of a Victorian household. It's also a lot of fun to watch, if you like 40-yr-old British programs. Upstairs, Downstairs is a great example. If they are a little hard to find (I've never seen them for rent, but then, I own the whole series), two movies to get are Gosford Park and Remains of the Day. The "Victorian" lifestyle with regards to BDSM isn't something you'll find an awful lot of info out there specific to BDSM. Basically the best research you can do is about Victorian era servants, and then add your own kinks and tweaks. Fortunately, there's a LOT of books out there on Victorian servants and households. Also fortunately, I'm on my laptop on my bed, and happen to be right next to the bookshelf where I keep some of those books LOL so here goes: Inside the Victorian Home: A Portrait of Domestic Life in Victorian England, by Judith Flanders Life Below Stairs, by Frank Huggett The Rise and Fall of the Victorian Servant, by Pamela Horn Not In Front of the Servants, by Frank Victor Dawes Roberts' Guide for Butlers & other Household Staff, by Robert Roberts Behind the Scenes: Domestic Arrangements in Historic Homes, by Christina Hardyment Most of these ARE out of print, but reasonably available through used book sellers like amazon.com or abebooks.com. One or two of these books will give you a good picture of the various roles of servants in a Victorian household, what life was like and what was expected of them, and some basic rules & etiquette. And of course, there's a plethora of "Victorian erotica" books out there which are NOT housed next to my bed...lol...and I'm too lazy to get up - but you can always find a couple books in that genre in the sexuality section of your local Borders. If you have a look at the link to On The Bead in my signature, my column this month covers serving afternoon tea and some other resources for serving at table.
