Hello nadia,

Sir Stephen and slave catherine, International. Master and slave 2004, are a Victorian couple. Sir Stephen is Lord of the Manor (and wears the nicest vests!). They are fantastic people and would be delighted to share information with you (or anyone who asks). Their website is http://www.restraining-order.com/.

Blast... that's Int. Ms 2005 not 2004. I'm a perfectionist, but can't find the edit button tonight.

I would suggest that you rent a few episodes of "Upstairs, Downstairs."  It's vanilla, but gives a reasonably accurate portrayal of the heirarchy of a Victorian household.  It's also a lot of fun to watch, if you like 40-yr-old British programs.

Upstairs, Downstairs is a great example.  If they are a little hard to find (I've never seen them for rent, but then, I own the whole series), two movies to get are Gosford Park and Remains of the Day.

The "Victorian" lifestyle with regards to BDSM isn't something you'll find an awful lot of info out there specific to BDSM.  Basically the best research you can do is about Victorian era servants, and then add your own kinks and tweaks.

Fortunately, there's a LOT of books out there on Victorian servants and households.  Also fortunately, I'm on my laptop on my bed, and happen to be right next to the bookshelf where I keep some of those books LOL  so here goes:

Inside the Victorian Home:  A Portrait of Domestic Life in Victorian England, by Judith Flanders
Life Below Stairs, by Frank Huggett
The Rise and Fall of the Victorian Servant, by Pamela Horn
Not In Front of the Servants, by Frank Victor Dawes
Roberts' Guide for Butlers & other Household Staff, by Robert Roberts
Behind the Scenes:  Domestic Arrangements in Historic Homes, by Christina Hardyment

Most of these ARE out of print, but reasonably available through used book sellers like amazon.com or abebooks.com.

One or two of  these books will give you a good picture of the various roles of servants in a Victorian household, what life was like and what was expected of them, and some basic rules & etiquette.

And of course, there's a plethora of "Victorian erotica" books out there which are NOT housed next to my bed...lol...and I'm too lazy to get up - but you can always find a couple books in that genre in the sexuality section of your local Borders.

If you have a look at the link to On The Bead in my signature, my column this month covers serving afternoon tea and some other resources for serving at table.

They're actually later than the Victorian era as they take place early 19th century;  but I'll let that slide because they are fabulous.

Another DVD that is worth getting is Manor House from PBS (there's also a companion book).  It's a PBS series about some volunteers who moved into a country home and took the role of Edwardian servants and the family they served for 3 months as a social experiement.   If you're in the UK, it was shown as Edwardian House.

If you really want to pick up the nuances of servants though - you have to hit the books.

Dear nadiaw28, Ladies and Gentlemen;

MasterFireMaam's information and MsSonnetMarwood's information is very good indeed.

I would further add to the list; Autumn Rose Taylor's "Taiming the Household Beast" and other domestic arts.  Her E-mail is [email protected] but, it has been a long while and haven't seen her active in a very long time.  I would add to it, Alice Kerr-Southerland Society International at http://www.aks-society.org  Autumn Rose Taylor has given several presentations on Victorian service at Black Rose Conferences in Victorian garb, right down to the undergarments.  Although, it is slanted towards the Mistress-male slave the service facts are still there.  "The Governess" is also a publication which gathers more International and England's take on Victorian service, also published by the Alice Kerr-Sutherland Society International.

Another good resource is, The International Guild of Butlers.  Which hails from England.

I will add, that during the Reign of Queen Victoria, which was rather long reign; it was the period of which historical archives can be researched as far as what was happening in the USA.  Born in 1819 the coronation in 1835 (When Andrew Jackson was President), death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861 (President James Buchanan and President Lincoln), which was the year the USA went into the Civil War.  Queen Victoria's death in 1901, saw the change of our US Presidents McKinley(25) to President Theodore Roosevelt(26).  Her lifetime spanded over many Presidents (#5-James Monroe-#26-Roosevelt); so it will be important to know where in the Victorian reign you wish to create your style.  The mourning period started in 1861.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

Netflix has Upstairs, Downstairs in stock (4 seasons, I believe)
