Hi.. I was wondering, if you were going to hire someone [a one person business] to come to your home [a plumber, personal trainer, contractor, caterer, etc], would you want to see the person's resume? I thought references and advertising were critical when it came to getting business, so what would it matter what continuing education credits, etc, a person has?.. If there was a certificate proving that they completed a course, would that be better than a resume? The way I look at it, if you've been in business for yourself for many years, you would only have one or two lines, unless you list every conference you've attended, every course you've taken, etc, so resumes don't seem that important <shrug>, but that is why I'm asking, because I haven't been in a position where I was hiring someone to come to my house.. ..

I tell you what, if the price is right, I can type up anything that will secure that job. As long as you don't check on my license and call the BBB and inquire about me, I'll fleece your ass good.

Jus sayin

P.S. wot's the job and wot does it pay?

No. I don't ask for resumes. Usually for stuff like that I get their name from a friend who has used them, if the price is agree upon, that's good enough for me.

I don't leave them in my house alone though- cause I'm not a total sucker. But no- I really don't ask for a resume. Maybe a license depending what it is.

That's what I was thinking, that anyone can create something, true or not. In fact, there are some businesses that offer fake references *shrug*. I think instinct and word of mouth are better than any piece of paper.. Although starting out, word of mouth is non-existent, so you have advertising to rely on *shrug*

The current business in question is personal trainer, $20 - $40 an hour

I would say check reviews on yelp... most of the contractors I know wouldn't have a resume off hand and most resumes are fake nowadays anyway, references are a best bet. People that put in extra effort to look good on paper usually have to do so because the work doesn't speak for itself.

Before they come to your house, ask for their registration number which you will be able to verify online. If its like the UK this register is monitored by a government body. I would also him to bring along a copy of his (up to date) public liability insurance.

For the U.S. you want to know if they are "bonded" and who the bonding agency is, then check if their bond is current. Other than a business license, which is for tax purposes, a contractor really isn't regulated by government except that he is legally required to follow building codes. Your gurantee is that he is bonded through an agency that provides guarantees the person will perform in accord to contract. Read the fine pring on your contract for services.

I would be concerned if a personal trainer was certified or not so I would want to know where they are certified and if it is up to date. At the very least they should have the basics of anatomy and physiology. Kinesiology would be even better.

Well there in lies part of the dilemma, searching4mysir. For example, you could have two "photographers". One has a Masters in Fine Art, specializing in photography. The other has no degree. The trick is, the person with the degree may be the worst photographer in the world, and the one who doesn't have a degree can be the Michelangelo of photography. Yes, it is important to know the basics of whatever field you're going to work in, but if you're not going to teach about the subject, do you really need to know about the intricacies? And, unless the customer is well knowledged in the area, will it really make a difference? What if a plumber calls a Philips head screwdriver a flat head screwdriver? Isn't it more important that a good job is being done, not how it's being done?.. .. With personal trainers, their main job is to help people get in shape, whether it is losing body fat, gaining muscle, becoming healthier all around, etc. Their job isn't to play doctor or physical therapist, so how would knowing the difference between cells and tissues [physiology] help you as a client?

A personal trainer most definitely needs to know a bit about medicine, physiology, first aid, etc... Think about it. This person will be coming into your home and putting you through the paces. You want to know before this starts if he/she knows how to design your diet/exercise program. There are a thousand ways you could be injured if he/she has no idea how to do his/her job. So, a resume might not be necessary. But, a conversation about certifications, training and experience would be a must!

I agree with darkwanderer

In the UK, if you invited an uncertified electrician, plumber or tree surgeon to do some work on your property, that uncertified person doesn't have the appropriate insurance which means if an accident happens such as your house burns down or a tree falls through your roof you have no come back.

Anyone can set themselves up as anything but the right checkable credentials will always be carried by those who went down the correct routes to obtain them.

As for a photographer, it is a form of art and there will be very good untrained photographers and crap trained ones but a bad picture never killed anyone.
